Television: Opiate of the Masses

Does this sound right to any neuro-knowledgable folk out there?

Yes, in my opinion.  Sure, there are some decent shows that come on the boob tube every now and then.  But some people have a problem limiting their usage, and become true junkies.  They don't care what's on T.V., just that it's on.  It's an escape, just like any video game or other form of electronic entertainment.  Advertisements and suggestive messaging are rampant throughout television and other mediums.

I think perhaps the unusual right-brain dominance the article refers to can possibly be mitigated by only watching the kinds of shows that cause us to analyse. The kinds of shows that make you want to further research the ideas presented, and leave you feeling 'productively stimulated'.

It would be much easier to evaulate some of his statements and comments if he provided some of those elusive things called references.

While an interesting argument, I think it would be a stretch to make television fit into "substance dependence" criteria.

Ya, that's why I asked about it here...

The 'substance dependence' seems to have been part of the hyperbole.

I was mainly wondering about the right brain dominance, endorphin release, and the effect these may have on habituation and suggestability.

Why can't opiates be the opiates of the masses?

Television is a dissasociative. One that plants ideas into peoples heads.

For example, news programs. You're watching the news reporter, talking about something, below there's a scrolling news ticker, in the background there's several tellies showing other news.

Your brain cannot consciously process all those different forms of information. But it thinks it's important to (after all, you chose to watch the news) so it goes into subconscious mode, taking in the information without you being aware of it.

I shouldn't need to explain the inherant dangers of subliminal messaging from corporate biased presstitutes that would rather wait for a downing street/white house press release then to get off of their fat, well paid arses and do some actual news work.

television is evil, references aren't needed for that.

Eh, television is a medium in which information can be disseminated. Like books, speaking, and the internet.

After all, a sword is not a killer, merely a tool in the killers hand.

I don't watch TV at all anymore. I'm safe there, but is my computer screen doing the same thing? I read a lot of educational stuff on the web, but I don't want my left brain to suffer.

Nope. CRT/LCD screens get freshed at typically 70-85hz range, compared to 50-60hz for telly sets. Sorry, I don't have the studies with me, but there is something hypnotic about the 50hz range.
