I do suspect the opposite of meditation is action.

And therefore, from my perspective the question posed in this thread is a bit of a trick.

I think people act all the time... they just don't always act with awareness.

If you practice action like you practice meditation... I suspect some good might come out of it.

A beautiful summation.

Thank you for this brief lesson in shared reality.

Unfortunately, I don't seem to be sharing it.

I would have thought meditation was an action.

But if it is possible to act both with or without awareness: would it not be more opposite to meditation to act with less awareness?

And in this case would acting not be opposite to meditation sometimes more than others?

And in this case... how can it be the opposite? Are they opposing spectrum's?

Good questions... and yes, the TRUE opposite of meditation would be action without awareness...

but I am talking about PRACTICE... and how can one PRACTICE something without awareness?

I am familiar with this idea i think.

But also, meditation can be thought of as the middle path.

Anything can be thought of as the middle path.

I consider Buddhism to be the great compromise.

No heaven... no hell... imagine all the people living life in peace... yooo-hoo-ooo you may say I'm a dreamer but I'm not the only one... and all that jazz!

I don't understand the middle path too well, I was just throwing it out there. But I think it is more complicated than just relativism, because it is an explicit path. I spent the last few years of my life thinking I was buddhist, but I was just sedentary.

Lately I can really relate to Gandhi, who was to the contrary an ascetic. I suppose this isn't any different than the opposite extreme of hedonism (Thriving on relativity), and actually; moments of self restraint are sort of necessary for a discipline of true hedonism.

Gandhi was an active fellow, but I think arguably meditative in his actions as well. It seems to me that anywhere in this spectrum could be part of the middle path, depending on where your consciousness is I would think - Like you said, anything can be thought of as the middle path. Where is the middle if not in relation to duality? Clearly the middle path implies that duality does not just resolve.

All most people can do is practice the opposite.

I consider meditation to be "directing one's attention consciously."

So the opposite would be... "NOT directing one's attention consciously?"  Or "directing one's attention UNconsciously??"

Either way, I think people 'practice' this all the time, in the sense that they do it and get better at it, not that they are trying.

I don't think action is the opposite because you can meditate while you act.  There are walking meditations, drumming meditations, other active mindfulness meditations.

The opposite of meditation (if there could be one, which there cant!) is looking out & everyone practices a bit of that everyday

Also for the sake of the thread (even though there is no opposite to meditation) Osho used to teach dynamic meditation where you let all the mad energy out by running around screaming violently then suddenly stopping & meditating.

This is my understanding of it. By my own words, I would say that this is not by any means THE middle path, but perhaps A middle path. There is something universal about Gandhi's life too though I think, and thats why its definitely worth a read. But of course you would not ever be able to read THE middle path though, not completely.

Its a path, because it entails action, thats all I meant by an explicit path.

I agree that when you get down to doing it, there really is no opposite.

Ive heard it described: Being a Buddha is seeing the Buddha in everything.

 Does this work if nobody else is around or do you have to direct it?

If you throw away every single path you could ever walk, how could you then take a 'wrong' step?

Isn't that true liberation & freedom? Knowing that you never possibly take a wrong step.
Any followed path will not result in any worthwhile achievment (spiritualy speaking) because the idea you have to walk a path to get somewhere is the very idea keeping you from 'that'

The best teahcing Buddha gave was not about any middle path, it was "there is no need to seek truth, simply let go of all your beliefs" because this truth you are seeking is the very core of your being, not some objective conceptual belief or idea, where are you looking from is important, keep ALL attention 100% there, not on some future attainment you are looking at.

Look inwardly & dont stop. Observe the observer.

Id agree 100%, but the Buddha in everything is what???
Isit somthing complicated that we have to attain or isit the most basic simple awareness in each being?

For me, the middle path is an important idea. There is not much to speculate. Its the middle, but the middle of what? When am I not in the middle? The one thing that anyone, at any state of consciousness can understand, is that it is a path in spite of relativism.

Keep questioning like that! Find out the middle of what, who does it, just keep questioning your self & your thoughts, with the same power that discovers great scientific discoveries etc...with that same enquiring look deep inside & all these 'important' ideas will fall away, leaving you free of the power of any idea.

PLEASE do it, theres such incredible bliss inside you and we all think we get it from 'things' damn i want everyone to get this so bad!!!!

What sort of meditation are we talking about? From my perspective, the oposite of meditation would be fantasy.
