seven's search count idea

my idea is for the cultivation forum. a search count feture that would block new users from posting questions until they use the search box fifty times! this idea is golden and would save so much stress for moderators and old hands that answer the same basic questions over and over. i value myself as a newperson who hasnt posted the most redundant ignorant questions and i can see where this is a BIG problem. and alot of people tell these "noobs" to use the search box. WHY NOT FORCE THEM TO! hahahaha! A? no posting until fifty searches

i'd prefer a system that forces the n00bs to read the forum rules before posting... but i think that has been discussed countless times already...

well here is a good idea! if someone is serious about learning they would be happy to search fifty or so times. it would cut alot of BS. If fifty seems like too much make it twenty or thirty searches before a new user can post in that forum.

I agree.  I don't even post in the cultivation forum anymore, but from my experiences there I'd say that's an awesome idea.

it would also be cool if when a noob posted a new thread, that when they click POST it shows related threads...

then they have to click a "My question hasnt been asked before" box before it is posted or some hsit

I could type something into the search box, press enter, then back, then enter, then back, fifty times, in like 1 minute, and be done with it.

in the box that pops up there should be a stern message about explaining the reason for the search count quota. something like"ATTENTION NEW USER you must first use the search option in the cultivation forum X amount of times before you can post! this feature has been added due to the extreme number of repete simple questions. type the topic of your question in the search box and enjoy researching for your answer that has most likely been asked asked before." they have to click "ok" then the search screen pops up. i know this will cut these questions drasticly! also it will teach the users to use search before posting!  if someone wants to know something they wont "cheet" the search count post block. its quicker to search than post a question then wait for someone to answer it.

ledbonzo i see you have taken an interest in me. someone else above replyed that someone could cheet the search count. did you even read my reply to it? but you can have an openion. i feel you are following my posts to flame me. thats fine. lol i dont feel a bit bad for hijacking that kids post to point out how this idea would prevent a unresearched question like " how do you make agar?" i wasnt cracking on his 2 posts. nor was i acting better or more L33t than him.

i dont mean any disrespect but if it worked people wouldnt be asking the same questions without searching. and its not so intrusive. call it a probation period in the cultivation forum. you are required to have fifty posts before you can rate someone. why not have twenty to fifty searches before you can ask a question? theres more of a chance people will try to find the answer themselfs. i wander howmany posts state "use the search function this question has been answered before"  just an idea i wont cry if i dosent become a reality.  :smile:

to add: this idea is like a  locked door. locks only keep honest people out. does this make locks a bad idea? of course someone could cheet to fill the search quota, but most will find alot of answers and enjoyment reading. and there would be many saved repete questions. plus it teaches to use the search function by experience. it isnt a punishment for being new.

I'm honest, and locks don't generally keep me out.  They have to be nice (read: expensive/new european) locks to do that.

I think the current solution is pretty much the best we can get and the administrator's time will best be spent improving the related threads feature so less of those posts do make it.  Perhaps also the post limit could be raised to 50 posts across all mycology forums?

In the general run of the mill mush cult day, is there any question that hasn't been asked before such that the present question isn't superfluous, excluding questions refrencing a picture or something?

I would imagine those kinda questions are very rare, but who knows.



Do you just want some way to punish those folks who ask dumb questions or what?  You could leave them a bad rating... Maybe if they added ( i think they had this before?) a "rate this thread" button you could just take your aggresions out on them that way, by downvoting their thread....  Or maybe there should even be a noobtastic forum for people who refuse to read teks or search?  Alot of other DIY type sites have these forums...

But really, what kinda threads are ok with you and what aren't?  Just no "hey how much water do I add to such and such substrate" but maybe "Do you think there's merit in adding more water for this reason?" is ok?


And has everything been asked before?  If there was a strict rule on no duplicate questions would there be anything at all happening in the forum anyways?  Kinda curious...

For what it's worth, I think a noobtastic forum might be a decent idea, but I do believe the point johnm is trying to make is that without those noob posts those forums are going to be a lot slower (which may be a good thing).

Then, you have minimal posts also. On top of that, you originally post in the wrong forum, then re-post in the correct section, THEN hi-jack another newbs thread in the wrong forum for an idea you have posted twice already.

oh yes you are right ive let it go . my lo  post count dosent mean i cant have an idea to try to help a situation right? i got a warning for calling the new guy ignorant. i ment ignorant in the true dictionary definition.  not the way most people use it. im sure it means someone that is innocently lacking knowledge . or hasnt learned something yet. but i see how it could be taken in offence.. sorry

allright, i have been thinking and i've come to some ending thoughts on my idea. i honestly think it would greatly reduce the most basic of questions. deep down i think people enjoy answering these questions to test their own knowledge, be helpfull, and feel smart all togather. thats sorta the beauty of the cultivation forum. i know i feel smart and helpfull when i correctly answer someones question. debates lead to better methods and understanding. plus i bet most advanced members do not log on to learn anymore. they log on to teach and most likely look forward to it. thus they wouldnt have as much to do if people didnt ask these basic questions.  it kinda takes the fun out of it. :smile:  possibly this search count post block idea wouldnt work as well as i think but i know it would reduce the questions by some percentage.l
