I understand your problem quite well. I used to eat out a lot but learned years ago that I can cook better than most places can, and besides, do it cheaper. If you don't like to cook I suggest that you start with something easy that you really love to eat. Then work up from there. You will have a new hobby with nutritious food that you know someone didn't make after they forgot to wash their hands or worse.

There are some really awesome restaurants in my town, a vietnamese place and a spanish tapas place where dinner for two is rarely under $100.  They are _so_ much better than any other food in town that it is worth every penny.  Just about any dish I try is the best thing I have ever tasted.

Neither does takeout so I have to go in and eat with a bunch of "upper class" people.  That part really sucks, if either place would take phone orders I would go broke.

I got seriously spoiled when I worked at a sushi restaurant.. it was a really nice sushi place too.. small but high class, only 4 employees.. owner was straight from japan and only bought the best and freshest fish and every vegetable was bought fresh every morning. I'd come in the mornings, make myself a huge bowl of miso soup with rice, extra seaweed and gyoza, for lunch the boss would make us any amount of any type of dish we wanted except for fatty tuna.. which we had to pay 50% for.. I was eating poke tuna dishes every day.. and then I'd usually get a couple rolls of my choice to take home for dinner, and he'd give us free green tea mochi too, and chain drinking green tea all day long. So I was eating like a king for free.. that was seriously the best diet I have ever eaten in my life.. I felt so good.. that and the fact that I was bringing home $100 cash a night easy on the slowest of days.. was definitely the best job I've ever had.

Then he sold the place and I had to find a regular job, but I was seriously addicted to sushi.. I had to eat it like every day. But no place served all the same dishes and very few places had the same quality of fish and variety, so I always ended up going to really expensive sushi places and I went broke pretty damn quick. Cause I can eat a lot of fucking sushi.

Sushi and thai food.. my biggest weaknesses. Oh and gourmet chocolate.

a few pics I took..

god I miss that place

sushi is definitely in a league of it's own.  but why wouldn't you have tried to work for another sushi place if the other one closed?

if I was loaded I would have my own house with my own personal sushi chef and sushi bar, and he would be on call 24 hours a day.  you can never have too much sushi, I think :yesnod:

I've been consistently disappointed with eating out.  This year I've been out to eat at a handful of classy restaurants that get good reviews and have good reputations.  They've all been decent, but there was only one that was really good that I would go back to.  As for the other places, I make better pork chops, steak, salmon, shrimp, veal or ribs when I do it myself at home.

When I'm paying $15 appetizers, $35 entrees and $10 dollar drinks, I expect to be served food thats much better than anything I could cook myself.  I guess there is a limit to how good food can be, and sometimes the prices continue to climb after the quality of the food has peaked.

Me too, and it may be the thing that pisses me off the most. I cook my food exactly how I want it, while restaurants will usually piss me off at some point. I can buy a leg of lamb steak for $7 a pound, go home, use my own spices, grill it, then eat the whole damn thing and love every bite. While at a restaurant I'll pay like $15 for 5 ounces that's dressed in an overly sugared sauce in an attempt to make it appeal to everyone.

Not to mention my home cooking is usually far healthier and obviously allergen free rather than me bantering with the manager for all kinds of accomodations.

I got lucky with this place.. my friend was good friends with the owner and they just happened to need a full-time server when I was looking for a job. All the other sushi places in the area were a bunch of elitists and they wouldn't hire me probably because I'm white.. like they all had all asian staff, except for like "Bob's sushi" or whatever.. lawl. But their sushi was crap.

But yeah sushi is definitely a league of it's own... it is the food of the gods.
Not to mention sushi restaurant customers are in general, ten thousand times cooler and more respectful then customers at ANY other restaurant.  I'd served before at other places and I HATED it. I freaking LOVED serving at the sushi bar, 99% of the customers were cool as fuck, you could shoot the shit with them, they loved the food and the service so they were always happy as hell...hardly anyone EVER complained... and the tips were FAT, like getting a $20 tip on a table of 2-4 was not uncommon at all.

I always tip the sushi chefs when I go to the sushi bar ... since they're the ones making the awesome food, not the beautiful asian chicks bringing me the check ... although they make a little too :wink:

you can make sushi for me anytime :yesnod:

Yeah they always tipped the sushi chef too.. he made a killing off that tip jar he had on the bar.

but yeah... I can't make the rice very good, but I can cut the fish and I can make a killer roll :yesnod:

And having a personal sushi chef on call 24/7 would be heaven. Oh to be rich..

My dad works for a high class seafood resteraunt that catches all its own food, so I can get free lobster, etc whenever I want.  It's excellent :grin::thumbup:.  I don't push my luck on that of course, just on holidays where they jack up the prices and a low supply is actually good for business (oh, economics, how I love you).

I do the same thing as a lot of people here claim to do.  I eat top ramen and the like for 6 days a week, then I blow a bunch of money on the weekends.

Sushi is good, but you can get much more whole seafood for the same price.  That's especially true if you buy straight off the dock.

true, but what makes sushi worth the cost is the particular and unique way every sushi chef makes it (especially at high-end spots) ... it's like buying edible artwork, as sushi is often very artfully prepared, both in appearance and contents ... anybody can "make" sushi at home, but unless they are devoted and work on it every day, it would be impossible to really match the work of those who do it for a living.

all I know is, you can tell a person has had some dank sushi by the excessive grin on their face  :grin: ... unmistakable.  and when you pair it with some weed ... ahh I'm hurting myself here, as I have neither. :sad:

My sushi chef told me in Japan, to become a traditional and qualified sushi chef it takes YEARS of training. They consider it a very strict discipline. It is definitely an art form.. he was all about the quality of the ingredients first, and secondly the presentation.. every dish had to be perfectly crafted and aesthetically appealing to the customer.

Hmm I'm going to an authentic place to eat this Saturday, and I'm getting some sushi. Going to be broke, but gonna be worth it.

the trick is to find a group of friends to join, get a variety of orders, and everybody takes one or two pieces from each order ... you definitely get the most bang for your buck, enjoying many more flavors than you normally would, and help with the bill.

I'm going with 4-5 friends, but they don't like sushi. One of them does, and so I'll probably get 2 and split it with them. The thing is the others are girls so I can't be like hey give me a dollar for a piece...Especially if I want to have relations with their friends. If they go tell their friends that I'm a cheap bastard then my chances are gone.

the problem right there is that you're going with non-sushi lovers!  that can bring down the quality of the experience by a good amount ... I've only had bad experiences when bringing people who don't like sushi, or have never tried it, with me ...

I commend that they happen to be girls, but couldn't you have just found girls who DO like sushi, to go with you? :wink: do enjoy yourself there, at least ...

Just order a variety of stuff and find out what suites your tastes best. Most sushi places allow you to order by the roll (6pcs) or if you order nigiri, it comes in 2pcs.

Maki = rolls
Nigiri = a slab of fish on top of rice
Sashimi = fresh and chilled fish sliced thin, no rice

Some of my favorites:

Maguro = Tuna
Toro = Fatty Tuna (fucking dankness)
Unagi = Eel
Hamachi = Yellowtail
Sake = Salmon
Ebi = Shrimp

things to watch out for...

Uni = Sea urchin sexual organs (gonads/ovaries).
This shit is yellowish brown, looks like puke and tastes like the bottom of the ocean.
You either love it or it makes you want to vomit.
Some sushi connoisseurs love it.

I am eating pasta I made. I spent prolly $2 on it: curly noodles ($1) a can of tomato sauce (<$1) and my roommate's spices and such. Ha!
