I have a horrible problem with expensive food...
    #8664436 -

Usually I'll be okay, but sometimes I can blow money like insane on food on a spur of the moment kind of occasion and then I'll bitch at myself for hours on end about all the money I wasted. I guess I'll try to have the best food I can in seek of comfort or something. Whatever it is, it can be a real problem.

For example, one of my worst days since I made it here in Portland:

On this day I took my car to the auto repair place and in the process didn't get to eat all day. It was sometime in the afternoon when I ended up finding some place called the Hawthorne Fish House which advertised itself as gluten-free on the menu. So I went in and spent like $16 on some grilled salmon, and a delicious fish taco. Later in the day I made it to New Seasons and spent another $20 on gourmet ice cream, dried fruits, special nuts, and buffalo jerky. Then when picking up my car I ended up back in the fish place and spent another $15 or so on fish and chips.

Doesn't sound like much, but I'm definitely not in the position to spend $60 a day on food. Especially if it happens a few times a month.

I used to do this last time I moved out which was at OSU. Somehow I would justify buying myself expensive cuts of meat and other grocery items that are pretty pricey.

But at home I can stick to my budget for month long stretches, only treating myself out when I actually plan it.

Anyone else have a problem like this? My best control is to reason with myself and stay out of places that sell expensive shit that I like. But sometimes it comes on like a short spurt of insanity and there's no controlling it.

I'm doing it this weekend. Going to eat at a nice place, and I'm going to regret it.

Fuck that, your only problem is you can't afford it.

Spending money on good food is the reason to get money in the first place.

I used to be seriously addicted to [the dankest] sushi spots in LA. I still am, to be sure, but I spent all my money on it, and now I have none [money] left.  It was totally worth it though :yesnod:

I think of other things I can spend my money on before I buy certain foods. It usually keeps my stomach from enjoying all sorts of delicious treats.

Dude, food in Portland is so expensive, and we share in the same fucking problem. I spend on average $15 a day or more for food and beer just on myself.  About $500 a month really, and I don't make enough to spend like that.  The thing is, I love quality.  Hawthorne Fish House Fish and Chips FTW by the way.  I dump hot sauce into my tarter sauce and mix it all up, so it's spicy too with the lemony fish.  Yummm!  That place rules.

I can go crazy at New Seasons also.  Their homemade pizza is some of the best (I know gluten free :frown:.  I do recommend finding a Grocery Outlet for some organic essentials to save a bunch of money, and then shop elsewhere for other things.  It's hard to resist all that delicious shit.  Good luck on that one.  I struggle with the same shit everyday.

Eh, if I die tomorrow, at least I ate good today, even if I got nothing to show for it but a fat shit.

Yea, I can't leave the grocery store without spending 50-100 dollars. Organic and dank food. I feel healthy though.

I do the same thing, but it doesn't stop with food.  I'm better with my money now, but I feel it's already too late for me to have learned a lesson.  :frown:

I hate the fact that I spend the most money on something that will last me 30 minutes max... Maybe 2-3 hours if you count cooking (longer for specialty items of course). I can't even stand spending money on clothes and such...  My rule is if I love it I'll buy it, but if I even have one doubt I wont. I get it from my brother and my dad (back from when I was a kid). My brother looks for the deals! He works at a Home Depot and they only get discounts once a year (10%) and he will buy stuff on clearance (for example sky lights) and then either sell them on E-Bay for a profit or return them in another Home Depot (with out the receipt .. his wife is amazingly persuasive) for full price since at that store they aren't on clearance! I'm not quite that frugal but still when I spend money on anything I feel bad.

I used to have that same habit you have.  You can control it, you just tell yourself you can't, so that you can indulge  ("I had no choice, the urge was unstoppable!" ...  Lies.)  When I get the impulse now, I picture how far that money could go towards something else.  Then I physically walk away, I don't trust any second thoughts about it, because they're bullshit lies too.  Keep walking.

I love good food too, but I almost always prepare it myself.

And when I eat it, I take my time.  I savor it like it's my last meal.  Eating out is a great way to burn money fast fast fast.  Seriously, sixty bucks worth of cocaine lasts longer than sixty bucks worth of restaurant food.  Recognize this serious danger and be very sparing with your money when it comes to expensive indulgences like that.

sixty bucks worth of high-quality food [sushi] is a much more satisfying indulgence IMO because the comedown is [usually] a lot milder
