Pressure cooker and Quart Jars
    #866312 - 09/05/02 10:13 PM (21 years, 6 months ago)

I have recently bought a pressure cooker, a presto 8 quart, and the only way I can fit quart jars in it is if they are sideways or if I take the rack out. Is it okay the turn the jars sideways or the take the rack out? I am going to be using birdseed with a polyfil filter with a seperate innoculation hole. Also how can you tell if the pressure cooker gets up to 15 PSI? I'd appreciate the help, thanks.

What do you think will happen if you lie them down???
They will fill up with water.
Are you sure you can`t fit them in??
Mine just fit.
If you can`t fit them in then rather take out the rack and put a cloth on the bottom.

Just lay some lids on the bottom to keep the sideways jars above the water line.

When that jiggler blows off, you hit 15psi!

You reckon that would work Max??
Then you can only fit possibly 2 jars in there??
or 4 maybe
but even then you`re still only going ti have a tiny amount of water to be able to keep the water line below your innoculation points, if you have them on your jars.
unless ofcourse you`re lifting the entire jar out of the water.

1. It doesn't matter if jars touch the bottom of the PC. (the bottom kernels might "explode", but this doesn't matter much anyway.)

2. It doesn't matter if the bottom of the jars are in water. (mine always are!)

Try and see by yourself.

Good luck,
LilMerlin.

I don't know about the pressure cooker, but usually, when they do not indicate the pressure measurments, there are two levels for cooking: the first (vegetables and such) and the second (usually for meat).

On a lot of them, there are indicatiors, sometimes a two red lines that appear out of the cover one after the other when the pressure increases. You have to wait until you see the second red mark, and then diminish the heat so that it keeps at the same temp for one hour and doesn't let the security valves to let air out too much.

But first,  you should read your manual, cook meat a few times and try some jars. You should be fine soon.

Have a good meal,
