hepa filter direction for glove box
    #8663338 -

ok so im building a static air hepa filtered glove box. I bought a cheap hepa filter at walmart that goes in some air purifier thingy, the filter says its filters out mold spores which is what im worried about. Anyway my question is, the filter doesnt have the direction of flow labeled, on one side you can see the paper filter element and on the other side is this black plastic mesh. So what side of the filter should be on the outside of the box?

Why don't you try running it and see which side the air comes out of?

The whole point of a glove box is for STILL air. You should have a fan or a filter on it.

I would recommend:

---air flow-->::Black::paper::---air flow-->

Unless you're trying to impress some friends or your granny it's not going to be much better than using a $5 tote with holes melted out and it'll be a pain in the ass to make for such little efficiency.

But to answer your question... you'll want the filtered air going into the box.

While your at it you should get some neon lights and decals. (I'm jokin, have fun)

Well he said a static air box, so I figured he meant he wanted to filter the air in the box then allowing it to sit.

If I was wrong so be it. That is my opinion on how the filter should face when being installed.

Maybe he should state exactly what kind of glove box he wants a little more clearly. Do you want a flow hood, or a still air box?

Its a still air box but i wanted to allow some flow so that when I spray it down with lysol a I can seal the box then with the filtered hole in the side i wait a bit to let the fumes dissipate before flame sterilizing my inoculation needle. It just seems like lots of lysol fumes + small air tight sealed box + torch lighter = bad

A glove box is for "still air" use. A real Hepa filter, (they don't carry them at Wal-Mart), is used for a "laminar" flow hood.

I am pretty sure that RR goes into depth on this subject quite a few times.

Search RogerRabitt's posts for laminar air flow, glove box, still air, etc. I'm sure you'll find it.

for more clarification im talking just about the hepa filter element ($7) I dont actually have the fan thing it goes in. I was just going to cut a hole the same size and slide it in and seal around it with silicon caulking, so there is no fan. Im doing this to allow the lysol fumes to dissipate before I use the lighter to sterilize my inoc needle.

That won't work at all. Like these guys are saying, if you're going that route just stick with a still air box. Don't use Lysol. Put a capful of bleach in a $.99 spray bottle and fill the rest with water. Use that to disinfect the inside of the box. After that, put all of your stuff inside the box and get to work. There will be no flammable fumes in the air to worry about and the box will be clean. The point of the box is that no air is stirring around inside, so make sure the arm holes fit tight around your forearms or you use some kind of sleeves to block outside air from coming in.
