Positive Pressure Glove Box ? (PICS)
    #2126510 - 11/20/03 11:44 PM (20 years, 4 months ago)

I am setting up a Positive Pressure Glove Box and i am trying to figure out how to set up the hepa filter. Here is a pic of my glove box.

This is how I set up the fan and the type of Hepa filter i am using. (I am going to use a new filter though)

I plan to put the fan inside the box and the hepa filter on the outside with a rubber gasket in between the filter and the box wall. Like this next picture, but with the wall.

When I tested the fan it seems that the one 4 inch fan will give plenty of pressure in the box, but when i put the Hepa filter next the fan the fan loses most of it power, you can barely feel air coming out of it. I'm wondering if the little air will be enough pressure to keep contams out of the box

Well i ended up using the hepa filter and it is building plenty of pressure in the box. I was hoping to upload a pic but I only can load 30 more kilobytes. I will upload tommorow.

I think you should put the hepa on the intake side of the fan.

I don't think it will work. The fan will bounce the air off of the filter and back through the fan blades. It doesn't provide enough velocity to penetrate the filter media.I believe that part of the magic of the standard Squirrel cage setup is the mass of the cage forces the air through the filter. Besides for 40 dollars you can get a small hepa at walmart that will do the job.

It provides enough pressure in the box. I can feel pleanty of air comming out the glove holes. I cant upload a pic for people to see the finished product.

When the particle load increases in the filter, so will the resistance to flow and the pressure drop across the filter causes it to be less effective. Many HEPA air filter units also do not account for air that leaks around the edges of the filters, this sealing problem accounts for more inefficiency. Failure to change the HEPA air filters when they specify can cause the fan motor to work too hard and burn out prematurely.I'm not knocking hepa's they are great for whole rooms.I'm just not sure that a computer fan can provide enough velocity to give the filtration you want.

I think there will be enough pressure.  The fan is a 4 inch muffin fan that has 85cfm and it seems to be doing well.  We will find out when i try it out.  Here is a pic of the inside assembly.

Here is a pic of the final product.

Let me know what you all think

looking good. I've been thinking about constructing something similar for awhile, but after doing research on a flow hood and seeing how much stress folk put on matchig the fan with the filter  I have to wonder if the 85cfm is enough. Is it actually sucking air or just blowing around whats inside the box?

If you put some tissue paper near the outside of the hepa does it get sucked flat against the hepa? if not then I'd guess you're not really getting any benefit from the hepa, cept it looks cool

Stick you hand in the glove box and strike a lighter then hold the lighter 3-5 inches away from the positive flow of the filtered air the lighters flame should bend over but not go completely out. If that does happen everything cool. If not you need a bigger fan.

I tried the lighter thing and it bends at about 5 inches and goes out at about 2 inches. This seem good?

I also tried using a tissue to check the hepa, and when i get the tissue about 2-3 inches it sucks up against the hepa. I put a thin pre-filter on it and it still sucks up against the hepa. Thanks for the advice...

I just used my new glove box to make some knock up some karo/water with a syringe. I sprayed the glove box with lysol, then let the fan/filter run for and hour. Hope all goes well. I know you dont absolutly need a glove box for this, but i do plan to do grain transfers in the future. Plus I wanted to try it out.

I guess a good way to test if your glove box is sterile is lysol-spray the inside, drop a sterile agar dish inside, let the fan run for an hour and then open the dish (move it around). Put the lid back and see in the next days if it grows mold..

.fs.

I got the fan at a place called Wacky Willies in Portland OR. They sell all kinds of Misc electronics. Radio shack has them but the same fan costs $18 there and mine was only $5. They also have 12v adapters for $2.50. I bought an extra fan and adapter just in case mine didnt work. PM me for a possible trade.
