I don't think things are really that black and white in the real world though.

I imagine a lot of purveyors of drugs such as cocaine and heroin literally watch people sniff and shoot their lives away... yet they still sell the drugs to them as its nothing to do with them.. which is a similar attitude to that as an arms manufacturer..

The selfishness and greed which evolve from this particular pursuit make aspects of it immoral in my eyes.

is it selfish and greedy to give someone what they want?

...does that make liquor store owners selfish and greedy as they watch their customers drink their lives away?

and/or

is it also selfish and greedy to vicariously watch someone die?

I was going to finish my post with that, but I couldn't be bothered.

Yes its exactly the same situation and I have exactly the same stand point for those sets of circumstances as well .

drug dealers are like you and me and anybody else.

there are what you might consider "bad" or immoral dealers. but theres also plenty of dealers that are good people.

then thats your prerogative on the issue.

personally, i could care less what people do to themselves.

because thats what it boils down to; what someone is doing to themselves and will do so regardless of anyone or anything.

So much for personal responsibility, huh?

Everyone needs to realize they are not their brother's keeper. Should someone not sell drugs because the person they're selling to could OD? Maybe or maybe not; that is their decision to make, but making it one way or the other doesn't make one immoral. Immorality is taking away the ability to make that choice.

Hah I consider this general lack of compassion for everyone else to be immoral. Surely compassion is the cornerstone for moral values...

Apathy is immoral.

so im immoral (and could possibly have 'bad' values, as you say) because i cannot be bothered to care about someone who has no place or purpose or role in my life?

im not talking from the drug dealers perspective, im talking about this from the person who neither buys nor sells drugs/alcohol.

Why should you not feel compassion for other people? why must people always give something in order to get something?

We are all unique, but at the same time we are all the same. We are the living embodiment of a paradox .

We are all equal, so why shouldn't we care?

You use the same argument that the anti-drug crusaders do.

"Because bad things can happen when people use drugs, no one should have the ability to make their own choices. We know what is good for them and they don't."

Supplying drugs, no matter what type, to a consenting adult is not immoral. Feeding drugs to a mentally handicapped person or a child is immoral because they do not have the capacity to make educated choices for themselves.

Like I said before, the only thing immoral is not giving someone the opportunity to make decisions for themselves.

Re: The morallity of drug dealing [Re: Redstorm]

I see your point.

From a harm reduction stand point, however, I believe the purveyor of the product has some responsibility and this is quite often neglected.

Personal responsibility is important, but surely people should watch each others backs in this game?

If some kid who was strung out, obviously didn't know what he wanted and was looking for some way to inebriated came to me (as a drug dealer) looking for something to get high off I would turn them down.

I would tell them go home and think about it.

I believe that people can and do use drugs for the wrong reasons, yet I don't believe drugs are bad. Sounds somewhat contradictory, I know, but this is my opinion. I don't believe there is such a thing as an evil drug, but some have more 'abuse' potential then others.

Apathy...

I agree with the part about some people simply not knowing what they are trying to get into. For example just the other day I had a person tell me that if acid is cheaper why not stop buying weed so i can get high on acid all the time. I laughed and told them that acid and weed are two completely different things you dont get the same effects from both.

I agree that personal responsibility is key. But you must realize a lot of people just flat out don't have it.

So should we treat these people like children and take their choices away?

Education and understanding.. treat them as if they were your family. If for instance your brother came to you and he had no preconceptions of drugs and what they can do, yet wanted to try heroin for instance, you wouldn't go out and score him a bag and give him a needle. You'd tell him about the dangers, what to expect, possible side effects blah blah and maybe convince him not to do it. The choice would still be his, but he would be able to make a more reasonable choice .

I don't see why we shouldn't do this for everyone..

I completely agree with you.

And Redstorm, that's what I was trying to say. Talking to people and educating them never hurts. I'm not saying take away their personal choice and treat them like kids. But I do believe somewhere in the middle tends to be the best answer.
