cubes and copes
    #8578875 -

Check out these copes and cubes I picked the other day from south FL. Had to run from some cows though, it got a little dicey.

Baby cubes pinning?

A group of Copes.

Can anyone help ID this one also found here in south FL. I know its in the genus Panaeolus but it was found in cow manure, has a thin long brown stem, cap is  about 2.5cm in diameter.  No blue-bruising has been observed.  Its a common one, I found about 30 of them.  Thanks!

Your baby cubes are a Coprinellus species.

The panaeolus is interesting, they don't seem to have any veil remnants around the margin of the pileus.  How does Panaeolus campatulatus sound?

Nice cubes and copes.  If you turn the caps upside down they will leave spore prints that you can mail to people.

it's not one that I know the name of, but it's probably an inactive panaeolus species.

Update on the unknown species: Gills are dark brown to black in color, spore print is black.  Habitat is a moist cow pasture under some shrubbery amongst decomposed cow manure.

I think your right.  Its not Coprinellus with the inky cap. And I dont dry them gills down becuase I have lots of spore prints already and I try to bump them all off before I pick them to spread the wealth.

The marketplace forum would be happy to take care of that problem for you.

Not sure how much of a difference that makes, probably none.

Was the Panaeolus growing directly from dung or just near it?

It was growing directly from the dung.  So it doesn't do much when you knock some of the spores off?  My question then is where do the spores come from in the first place?  Do they pass through the cow's digestive system and are in the dung already or are the spores in and around the ground and use the dung as an ideal substrate to spread mycelium?

Thanks, yea I read the trading forum was taken over by mushroomjohn and is no longer a part of shroomery.  I guess I'll just have to wait a little while before I can sell prints.

Baby cubes pinning?

Nice finds!  Nice report!
In the 2nd picture I do not believe those are cube pinners.  They are another dung growing species.

I havent been on here in a while, But i saw this thread by chance

These arent copes..... They are some inactive pan species, probably pan antilarium(sp). I dont know if all of your "copes" are false but I would make sure they are all blueing. I can tell by looking at the stem.

About the 3rd and 4th pic. It might seem confusing to distinguish some of this mushrooms, but they all seem part of a big group called Panaeolus papilionaceus. Some specimens are more light colored than other...

Just a little literarure about this issue:

Until recently, this species was a part of a confusing group mushrooms that included Panaeolus campanulatus, P. sphrinctrinus and P. retirugis. However, work by Gerhardt (1996) indicates the latter are conspecific, P. papilionaceus being the oldest valid name.

Regarding the 4th pic, and depending on the sporeprint color, it can fit Panaeolus papilionaceus, Paneolina foenisecii or a Psathyrella gracilis specie.

ok thanks for commenting.  You're right, that group is not all copes, but the ones on the left that are coming up together all blued blue.  So i guess theyr either subbs or copes, right?
Heres a pic of 2 Panaeolus caps that both bruised blue:

Heres a pic of the same 2 Panaeolus caps respectively dried:

all the mushrooms in the 3rd picture are papilionaceus....
I highly doubt any of them bruised blue. Looking at your main finds picture I see that most of your Pan mushrooms are copes... Just go through your dry ones and look for brown, unbruised stems. Caps might be a little harder but dont worry they arent toxic
