see the thing is i shouldn't have even put that 3rd pic up, because I'm almost sure I found those guys to have a brown stem with no blue bruising and tossed em.  I only took it cuz theyr were lots of em on one piece of dung, my bad.  All the pans that bruised blue I kept.  I think theyr copes and most everyone has agreed.  But some looked different than others, mainly the cap, and I was just curious if there are 2 different pans that would bruise blue and grow in cow dung in south FL.  If not, theyr just different looking copes.

I'm glad I read this thread. I just returned from a simple hunting trip (it's been raining like crazy this last week in the Houston area)and the small specimens I found (growing in tall weedy grass next to a cow patty) I hoped might be copes, particularly since the spore print is black. But they weren't bluing like I'd seen in the various photo's and books. After about 20 minutes they did bruise a blackish color but that could have been dust from the spores. As much as I didn't want to admit it I wasn't seeing the real bluing I expected. After reading through this thread I suspect the perfect little babies I found are panaeolus papilionaceus.

very nice, I find copes in the field I go to every night when it's not raining. And the horse field I work at usually has a few cubes if it has rained recently.
