Yeah there's that. I've heard some people argue that recycling uses more energy then it saves.. which is dumb. Apathy/"whogivesafuck" is another one. Some people think there isn't a problem to begin with.

Would I be wrong in feeling like this could be some kind of bizarre green conspiracy? I have no doubt that there is a garbage patch somewhere in the ocean due to the currents. But I kind of feel like this is being blown way out or proportion and that there is an exaggeration of facts and effect of this phenomenon.

Also, I'm one of the people who think recycling is pointless. In fact most environmentalism to me is stupid. I'm not saying that to piss on anyone's parade or start a fight or arguments, it's just what I think.

Yes i remember reading this was an extreme exaggeration.

You think if something like this existed there wouldn't be better pictures or even videos of it? I mean the only pics available show pretty much nothing.

awesome the shroomery island may someday be a reality.

i wouldn't be suprised if we could let it grow for another 50 years then end up mining it for resources.

~dill's girlfriend~
"Even if the garbage in the Pacific isn't really twice the size of Texas people are still polluting our planet everyday. Not enough people think to recycle their plastic, glass, carboard, and paper {the only way most people recycle is if they get a deposit for it}. And it's more than that, people don't even throw away their garbage in a trash receptical half the time.  Driving in a car, everyone thinks it's ok to throw stuff out the window. I think it's disgusting. I've particiapted in Adopt A Highway program every year for as long as I can remember and I see a lot of trash on the side of highways. It really does make me sick. We pollute the world enough with our garbage as it is, why throw extra on the ground to make the problem worse. I got kinda off topic, but the point I'm trying to make is, even if this story is an exaggeration, garbage still gets thrown into the Pacific {and the Atlantic for all you on the East Coast} and there is no reason for all that pollution."

Seems like a good development.  Provided the trash has to go somewhere, better for it to be in one place in the middle of nowhere

I wonder if they can't develop some microb that could live off that shit?  Would seem to be an ideal location, warm oxygenated water.

So do you guys think we're killing the planet or ourselves, when we create trash dump islands and refuse to recycle?

Huge difference.

You know I realized something the other day, I was at the garabage facility recording audio, and I noticed that all our garabage is seperated at the facility. ......,.... and I cant help but ask myself why the fuck do I bother with recycling things myself, when I could just throw them all in one bag, and have the facility which we all help pay for do the seperating...

The pacific garbage patch is well documented and well known, i'm surprised how many people don't know about it here.  That crap on the beach is not what the PGP really looks like, most of the patch consists of near microscopic particles.  It's actually extremely rare to run into giant masses of boue's and crap, that's from a barge spill, not the PGP.

Well yeah no shit. But most people think recycling is pointless...

Why is that?  Is it because they don't think there's a problem, or that they think its hopeless so might as well go balls-to-the-wall?  Apathy?  It's too much work?

I think alot of that misconception is that some major recycling facilities were caught taking plastics and shit and dumping them, after they were told and paid to be 'recycling' them, so naturally people see that and they think well if they are just going to dump my recycled shit anyway why recycle, blah blah blha.
