Martha cool mist back pressure
    #8562802 -

Im about to build a martha and Im wondering about the issue with back pressure buildup killing cool mists.  Does anyone have a good solution to prevent this from happening?  What if I raised the cool mist above the gh so that the hose goes downwards to use gravity to help the air and humidity flow without creating pressure?  Id hate to start burning through these on a regular basis if I can avoid it from the beginning.

Thx!

Sure, put the coolmist inside the marth.

That won't help with fae then will it?

You shouldn't rely on your coolmist for FAE anyway.

I was under the impression from everything I've read on the site that one of the primary reasons for using a cool mist was for fae as well as humidity, and if it didn't handle the humidity fully to use an ultrasonic to boost it a bit til it's upwards of 90-95% RH.  The martha's with the hose run from the cool mist to the gh pulling in fresh air wouldn't serve the same purpose inside since they would be recirculating air mostly right?

If you put yours inside how do you handle this problem.. by hand fanning twice a day?

Thanks for the feedback... I want to get this setup right  and appreciate all the help I can get!  :yourock:

You can do something like this with the inlet to allow in air from outside. I used a flexible plastic piece of gutter when I had my martha.

That's a good idea.. i think i might try that first.  Seems like it'll be better for the cool mist and make keeping the rh level up easier.

The other thing I have going on is that the greenhouse i got is one of those 4 tier ones with no bottom should I try to seal it if I'm going to use that method or just find a rubbermaid container the right size to sit the whole thing into?

Put the whole thing into a tub.

That's kinda what I figured.. just have to find one the right size since this one isn't the regular 36" martha closet.  The jars aren't even close to colonized yet.. they're movin' kinda slow, but when they're done I'll be posting some pics.

Thanks mate.

Put the coolmist inside the greenhouse, and then cut lots of windows and slits to provide for fresh air entry.  If you insist on improperly using the coolmist for air exchange, you'll be replacing it every month or two at least.  In addition, they hardly move any air at all, so you'll also have insufficient fresh air.

I certainly haven't ever gone through a coolmist (running 24/7) this fast. Perhaps it is due to the fact that I have three seperate PVC paths running from the coolmist to the green-house to reduce back pressure. Or maybe I'm just lucky.

And regarding sealing your greenhouse/martha off at the bottom, this is something you definitely don't want to do as an open bottom is an additional pathway for FAE.

I had a lot of water collecting on the bottom of my martha.

Sealing the bottom with a tub with perlite solved the issue.

Not sealing the bottom can cause massive contamination issues.
Cutting slits a few inches from the base and stuffing them with polyfill or placing a filter patch over the area will allow for positive pressure inside the martha to be mediated by neutral pressure outside, allowing for filtered FAE. This also allow heavier CO2 to be expelled.
Love.

Ok.. so putting a tub on the bottom of the gh should be sufficient then?  When I talk about sealing I usually think of an airtight seal like a 3mill contractors garbage bag sealed all the way around the bottom or something like that.  I'd rather just have a tub of perlite at the bottom to make life easier if that will work without inviting too many contams.

RR - when you say 'windows' are these just open air holes or are they sealed with some type of device?  I have tyvek handy and micropore tape but that's about it as far as contam filters go.  And with the slits does stuffing them with polyfill not block fae too much?  The door on my greenhouse has a zipper door up the front - would it make sense to use that as an opening for fae or should I seal that and do the filter patch window thing instead (It sounds like that would be better for clean fae that's contam free)

I already feel enlightened so thanks to everyone for all the great advice!

You cut slits and windows for fresh air and you DON'T use polyfil or filters of any kind.  Those who say to filter air entering a mini-greenhouse simply don't understand how mushrooms work.  There is absolutely NO reason to filter air entering a fruiting chamber.

The time for sterile procedure is when generating spawn.  Fully colonized substrates will not contaminate if you give them plenty of fresh air.  Molds thrive in stale, still air such as in a fruiting chamber stuffed with polyfil which limits air exchange.  Mushroom mycelium thrives in fresh, swirling air such as in a wide open fruiting chamber with lots of holes for air to enter and exit. It doesn't matter if mold spores enter the mini greenhouse/fruiting chamber or not.  The mushroom mycelium will eat them for lunch.  Many new growers do not realize this, and thus they contaminate their own projects repeatedly, by trying to adapt filtering methods for spawn jars to the growing environment.

My mini-greenhouse has slits cut from floor to ceiling in several places.  The more air entering and exiting the better.  I run two cool mist humidifiers inside the greenhouse, and these produce plenty of moisture and also swirl the air around inside since there's no tubes or hoses to limit flow.  Remember: moving, turbulent fresh air is a pinning trigger for mushrooms and a death blow for molds.

There is no need to filter your fruiting chamber, unless it's a monotub.

monotubs don't get filtered either afaik, the polyfill is there just to keep the humidity up while allowing FAE (I suppose you could say it filters the water out of the air, keeping it in place?)

I keep a tub of perlite at the bottom of my greenhouse as well. Some moisture is inevitably going to collect a drip down. However, the tub is short and doesn't reach the plastic covering of the greenhouse, technically not creating a seal.

Word... My seal was far from air tight.

It actually helps to fill any empty shelf space in the greenhouse with trays of moist perlite.  They'll collect drips and also help to keep the humidity high.

I also lay paper towels all around the edges to absorb moisture that makes it to the floor but misses the trays.  Twice a day, I pick them up and squeeze out the water, and then replace them on the floor.
