Because they violate the laws of physics.

If you can point out some examples of people running cars on water or using tesla's radiant zero point energy, I'd be happy to explain why and how they are bullshit.

Fair enough, lol - I'll be honest, I don't have the first fucking clue about alternative fuels and their realistic possibilities, all I know is that the American drug like dependence on oil is pathetic, and I'm sick of it.

Now, I believe, in a time of desperation, as profits drop.. a new competitive market for alternative energies may come available.

Alternative energy should be seen as an oppurtunity to cash in, and not as a threat.

What is the news saying about the gas hikes - and what are peoples reactions in North America? (im travelling right now.)

Really?  I guarantee you the American government is working feverishly to ensure that we survive the switch from petroleum at any cost.  They aren't retards.  I wouldn't be surprised if they already have some alternative in the wings but are just letting the petroleum economy work itself out before they introduce it.

Cold fusion anybody?

Well, I guarantee you that the oil companies are working feverishly to ensure that they survive the switch from petroleum. They are't retards either. They can see the writing on the wall for oil - in fact, they probably know the situation better than anyone.

In a hundred years time we'll still have Exxon, Shell and BP. But they won't be oil companies, they'll be "energy" companies. It's already starting with BP's investment in solar panel manufacturing.

We won't return to a dark age while there's money to be made keeping us out of a dark age.

Erm, you know the energy still has to come from somewhere? Like coal, or nuclear. Tesla's energy distribution idea has nothing to do with dependence on oil.

He had a wireless energy transmission, but he also made a dipole that worked off of the potential difference between the ionosphere and the earth. The man was a material genius, the knowledge and understanding he had of physics and electronics is still ahead of his time.

Radiant energy means no transmission lines, no loss (seriously, it's not microwaves, he claimed it was no loss. Even if it wasnt 100% efficent, who cares? That energy will always exist for as long as the earth and sun existed). Radiant energy means vechiles could be electrically powered without having to lug around batteries full of acid and heavy metals, or compressed hydrogen, which can never be made that safe (still safer than a petrol fire when the canister's are made right)

Tesla's work offended the capitalists. Tesla wanted to use energy to liberate mankind. JP Morgan saw, or at least set the precedent where it's used to enslave us instead. When the oil "runs out" that's what you yuppies will become. Slaves. Slaves in FEMA interment camps. Slaves on the GMO food breadline.

It's not going to be a rural utopia where everyone grows their own food, wears flipflops and guitar production reaches all time high. It's going to be the dark ages. For some at least.

If ever there was a time to be spiritually awakened, and aware of the infinate power in all life, to wake up from the dream of materialism, it's now.

I hear you on the prices and all and this will cut down on pollution and shit.
But, I do have to say that I live on the side of a mountain in a valley town. There is nothing within walking distance and from this point of view, a car IS a necessity.
If I were in a city with public transportation, it would be different.
I am glad that you are really not affected by this bullshit, but there are many many people who are and it really sucks for them.
Some people have to drive pretty far to get to work to keep a shitty house for a roof over their heads. Do you think it is good for them to have to pay outrageous prices every time they hit the gas pumps?
People are cutting back on the foods that they feed their families just to make up the difference in gas prices so that they can afford to drive 20+ miles every day to a job they hate and dont make a bunch of money at.
Sure its good if you dont have a car or have access to public transportation but for the m,illions that dont have your luck, this really sucks.

Have you got a (reputable) source for this? I can't find anything on it.

Try to keep this discussion civil please.  I will feed myself just fine, you can bet on it.  If the situation really gets that dire (as in first-world citizens struggling to feed themselves, not likely IMHO) maybe we'll learn something important.  Last time I went to the states (last month,) a good half of the personal vehicles I saw were SUVs and full-sized trucks.  There's a hell of a lot of room left for belt-tightening.

True.  If I blame anyone, it isn't the oil companies first.  First I blame the status-seeking, gas-guzzling SUV drivers that have driven up consumption to the point their idiotic quest for whatever-it-is has produced a global shortage on a non-renewable resource.

Good going, guys.

I'm excited for the gas prices to go up...its about time. The fact is they never should have been affordable in the first place if they are to truly reflect the impact of our indiscretionate indulgences. The game is changing and so must the players if we want to continue...people should stop driving to the mall to buy new clothes and instead start an organic garden in their yard, its truly more fulfilling and a 100x times better for the earth. The system is falling apart and I'm happy that it is:shrug:

I would think it very likely that 1st world citizens such as those of America and Western Europe will be facing shortages of food and likely starvation for a lot of people. Luckily my parents and I are expanding the garden this year and attempting to be completely self sustainable food wise.

if free trade was legit and we werent hording oil reserves gas prices would be around 9.50 a gallon.  i stopped using my car a few monthes ago, but the public transit around me is very nice so i havent had any troubles.  infact i'll  save thousands of dollars every year now.

I'm stoked on how much I'm saving, I made a pretty penny selling off my car and bought a couple little mopeds for a fraction that get ~80+mpg. :yesnod:

To be honest, I really wouldn't care - the internet, like many modern conveniences, aren't necessities. It's cool if I can use it, and it's cool if I can't.

the way the world functions now, in this modern society, both internet and cars ARE necessities.
