Hiking Boots
    #3470804 - 12/09/04 01:48 PM (19 years, 3 months ago)

I'm hiking the Chicago Basin in Colorado (up above Durango) in June and am looking for some new hiking boots to get broken in. Wiccan- you mentioned your boots in another thread, so maybe you have a suggestion for me. Any suggestions for a good pair of hiking boots? Which ones should I stay away from?

Thanks.

I have a pair of Columbia boots for hiking..they are not expensive, $60-100 for a decent pair, and they are just as good as any, in my opinion, as long as you aren't going to do any intense climbing or anything. Birkenstocks are always good too.

Cool. Thanks. Here's the area I'm going to. There are three peaks here that are over 14K. No, that's not me in the pic. No clue who it is.

Here's a cool pic of the area

Yeah, we'll be there for 5 days. Get dropped off of the Durango/Silverton train half way up and then you hike into the basin. I'll have some shrooms for one of the more laid back days.

I'll jump in on the Vasques bandwagon.  I wear these ones...

I've put hundreds of miles on mine, from the top of Mt. Whitney to the bottom of the Grand Canyon and many places inbetween.

Can't go wrong with a pair of Vasques IMHO!

Cool. I'm going shopping tomorrow. Have to get a new backpack to. I'm looking at the Osprey Crescent 90.

BTW, I hiked the Grand Canyon rim to rim about 10 years ago. Great trip.

When I did Grand Canyon I went in and out on the South rim.  Took the Kaibab trail down, spent three days exploring at the bottom, and the Bright Angel trail back out.

Hiked out in the middle of the night under a full moon (left the river at 11PM and arrived at the rim just after sunrise).  It was probably one of the best hikes I've ever had!

I said rim to rim but i guess that isn't right. We took the two trials on the south rim. Same ones you took. We went out at about 3am though rather than late night. We were down at the bottom for 3 or 4 days. That was definitely one of my most memorable hikes. I'm told this hike I'm doing in Colorado is awesome. I've been jeeping in the mountains around this area and it is absolutely beautiful.

I ended up buying a pair of Chaco Beckwith hiking boots and an Osprey Crescent 110 backpack. The Beckwith's are highly priced, but I found a good deal online and grabbed them. I got the pack for 25% off. Another great deal. Now I've gotta break these boots in. Planning some shorter hikes for Feb and Mar then a longer one in May before the expedition in July. Plan is to hike into the basin on July 2 and stay there until the 7th. I can't wait!

REI has a nice pair that Merril is making for them.

nice and sturdy, good for packing, unified front so
good for fording and crossings (beeswax sealant).

I had a pair of Vasques that lasted me about 6 years
and hundreds of miles of backpacking and light trail
hiking.

I have a pair of Bean Gore-Tex books that have lasted a few years. great for hiking in muddy conditions like indian pass in the adirondacks...

I wish I had an REI around here. Closest one is in Houston, about 3 hours from here. I just don't have time to go there. The reviews on the Chaco Beckwith's are great, so they better do me good. They regularly go for $239 a pair. I got them for $179. They sure as hell better perform!

sound pretty fancy.

I love REI.

it used to be that I had to go to seattle to go, but they've
started popping up all over cali.

that place is like home depot...I can roam the aisles for hours
with a semi.

Rei does have a website that you can order from. They also have Reioutlet.com, which has some amazing deals some times.

Another good place to search for gear in general is sierratradingpost.com. great deals there too.

yeah Im on the prowel for prety much everything right now. Im planning a 1 month backcountry trip to Denali this summer. My gear is crap so Im pretty much buying a whole new setup with the exception of my pack. Trying to save money and catch all the deals so I can collect the stuff I need by the time I have to fly out. I've got about 7 months, I hope I can afford the gear I want. A month without a trail in sight with shitty gear would be torturous.

Sounds like a great trip. I'm trying to work out my calendar to join MJ's Thailand trip this year. I'd really like to do that. I'm pretty much having to buy all new gear for my July trip too. What I haven't lost is worn out.

the only thing about ordering online is that you don't get to be fitted for them. the correct fit is super important if you will be taking off for awhile. if you are just gonna hike for a couple hours it may not be so bad but you can rip you feet to shreds on a backpacking trip. it's impossible for me to find shoes that fit me right though. just make sure you hike around for several hours *before* you go to make sure everything is all set.

Most reputable online dealers will exchange with free shipping if they don't fit.  I'm planning several short hikes over the next couple of months to wear them in.  And I'll wear them around and on some shroom hunts

I've been using Meindl hiking boots for the past nine years now. My first pair broke down a year ago, and that was after heavy use.
I highly recommend Meindl. (the model I'm using isn't sold outside scandinavia I think, but it's basically same as the Engadin model, except with a longer neck.)

getting good quality shit is always good.  but you need to remember that quality is nto the most important.  COMFORT is THE most important thing period when it comes to boots and packs.  if its not comfy its not going to be comfy.  may feel like nothing in the store, but after a few miles of hiking you are going to be cursing your ass off!

i've bought the 3/400 boots and although they are great quality they never really fit me right (narrow long feet).  now i jsut keep buying cheaper columbias cause they do fit perfect, but wear out way earlier.

first thing to keep in mind when shoe shopping...PERFECT fit!!!  really it is the most important thing.  then go for your quality boots if you find a few that fit good.  also keep in mind the type of terrain your hiking in.  from thos pics it looks to me like its fairly rocky and not too wet.  if thats teh case look for boots that fit that description (mainly the thickness and type of material in the sole).

anyway just wanted to say comfort, comfort, comfort

and that does look like a KILLER place to go hiking!!!  im hoping you will put some pics up somewhere, if not here at elast tell us where we can see em

im always takin in names of palces to go hiking.  in fact its from a few posters here, in the pub no less, that i have palnned a couple hikes for already   peace man, have fun.

PS. i use an Outdoor Works Colorado 80/90 pack.  i dont know where to buy this brand (got second hand) but it has been the best pack i have ever used.  fits like a glove and carries a ton of shizzle.  if they carry that brand may want to check and see if they fit you.  mine was 200 used, he said 400 new.  but its quite a nice fit.  anway jsut putting it out there

i've mentioned it a few times as well.  i ahvnt seen much interest :frown:  i think people are probably worried about some people not being prepared enough for whatever teh hike is...id be paranoid too.

id be happy to start one up, but i doubt many people would be coming all this way for that....but if anyone is interested there are trails for any and every skill level here.

should someone make one and if its in the western states i'd probably like to come

Id be down for a backcountry trip. We'd definately have to make sure anyone that was coming was actually prepared for the trip of course. I could just see it now. Car loads of kids with coolers and hibachis standing around bewildered... "So, where exactly are the pull up camp sites?"

  that would be my worry....which is probably why, unfortunatly, any back country trip would probably be pretty short, mild and close to roads.

maybe we could all say where abouts we are in teh world, make things a little easier to plan for....jsut state/province or somthing.

im on vancouver island (right across from vancouver).  thats southwest bc canada, right above puget sound washington.

Im just biding my time till july for Denali. That place looks amazing, cant wait to do some glacier hiking. I'll certainly post my pics when I get back from that one.

The summer after this would be a good time for me. Im sure my crew would be down to go again. They have pictures of them sliding down giant snow patches on their packs. I was sooooooooooo jealous!

if anyone plans a trip out to glacier national park count me in probably.

I am going there this summer. I am doing a massive road trip this upcoming summer. I could pick you up if you want. Check out my "Great American Road Trip" thread somewhere in the gathering/travel forum.
