Because cars are not necessities, they are luxuries - and increasingly just status symbols. Unfortunately, the rich can probably dismiss the gas hike - sure, they may have to make some serious sacrifices like limiting their comcast subscriptions or getting the slightly less crazy cell phone than they wanted, but that's life - sometimes you just can't afford 900 channels and blue tooth. I hope that gas reaches $10 this time next year, and everyone gets the fuck out of their little bubbles and start acting like realistic people for a change.

To be honest, I really wouldn't care - the internet, like many modern conveniences, aren't necessities. It's cool if I can use it, and it's cool if I can't.

I'm 20, I've been living by my own means for 3 years now - I ride the bus, share rides, and longboard everywhere. No insurance, no gas, no tickets, no hassle.

And that is just a fraction of the problem, this is a world wide thing. It hasn't affected me yet because I just bought a little 4 cyl Corolla, great on gas.

that is one thing I forgot, and that's very true. i think that the price increase should help stimulate a dramatic shift in how people live, commute, and so on - so I'm all motherfuckin for it.

Dude. You live in Seattle.
I understand what you're saying, but you probably live in a metropolitan area where your grocery store, place of work, and other necessities are accessible either by bike or mass transit of some sort.
I live in texas. In a large metropolitan area of texas, if you were to try to bike to your grocery store or bank, it would take you about 45 minutes. One way. And there's a significant chance of heat stroke involved, because for over 3 months it stays above 100 degrees.
And work? Forget it. That's a two day trip, minimum.
How about mass transit? That's for commie assholes. Nobody pays for mass transit anymore. I had a friend that tried to get to school on a bus for a few weeks. It took her three hours every morning to travel ten miles, and four hours to get back in rush hour traffic. Mass transit is virtually non existent here. The mass transit that does exist is only accessible by car, and will really only cut down on your cartime, not eliminate it.
So don't tell me that a car is a "luxury". If I didn't have a car, I couldn't work, eat, see my family, or go anywhere for recreation. Ever. Just because you live in some fucking fantasy land on the west coast doesn't mean the rest of us don't live in suburban sprawl HELL. And that doesn't give you the right to gloat about having made it west a few years before I did.
In the last year I changed my lifestyle a lot. I moved out of the big city to a college town, and I certainly try to bike as much as possible. But the way AMERICA is built (not just some privileged ass west coast dream city) is completely dysfunctional. It was built this way before I was born, and now I have to fucking pay to fix it.
Cars are necessary for most of America for the time being. If you really care so much about how we use our cars and how we live, why don't you take the time to move down south and help me petition the local republican cronyist government to fund a civic overhaul of trillions of dollars worth of real estate. Sound like fun to you?
Great, I'll send you a plane ticket.

so you admit cars a necessary in this modern world, then why say something like that child? You should have said the way most stupid white suburban Americans use thier vehicles is not necessary. I only use mine to get to work and buy food shit like that.

i moved closer to school so i can just bike to get all my food/go to school and visit friends.
only thing my car is for is visiting my parents once in a while, which would be too far of a bike ride.

Well, to be truthful, I live in a suburban hell myself right outside of Seattle - I only listed Seattle because I was born and raised there, and it's def one of my favorite cities in the world. This is why I posted this - to gain perspective, I understand that for a lot of people, due to the infrastructure of the system, cars are completely necessary, and judging from your post, it sounds like it definitely is for you down south. Over here on the west coast though, there are PLENTY of other options people could use, yet the streets are completely crammed in this clusterfucked ratmaze of SUVs and expensive luxury sedans. I'm not tryin to pick a fight with people who actually NEED cars, just the people who rationalize that they are necessities, instead of being realistic and seeing them as luxuries.

Yeah I live six miles from work (a bout) but I can't take a bike because it's way too dangerous, cars are always flying off the road snapping telephone poles in half. Not to mention no where to ride the bike besides directly in the road.

Understandable for sure, bikers in this area are typically harassed and given no quarter by drivers, which I think is pretty fucked up really. Sidewalks are disappearing too, making it clear that you either conform and get a car, or run the risk of getting flattened by one
