Because cars are not necessities, they are luxuries - and increasingly just status symbols. Unfortunately, the rich can probably dismiss the gas hike - sure, they may have to make some serious sacrifices like limiting their comcast subscriptions or getting the slightly less crazy cell phone than they wanted, but that's life - sometimes you just can't afford 900 channels and blue tooth. I hope that gas reaches $10 this time next year, and everyone gets the fuck out of their little bubbles and start acting like realistic people for a change. :rockman:

I own a vehicle, and I actually think rising gas prices are probably going to be a good thing in the long run.

As prices hit 5, 6, 10 dollars a gallon, more and more people will realize the repercussions of their lifestyles.  Perhaps we don't need to indulge every desire for convenience and gratification that enters our thoughts.  Restraint is a valuable skill westerners for the most part have not yet needed to develop.  I think it will make us happier people once we learn to adjust, and give up our sense of entitlement to all of the material and technological luxuries we are accustomed to.

In fact this may be a major step in evolution.  As resources shrink, materialism may become a less attractive way of life, and more value will be found in developing the skill of being happy with what one has.

I'm going to have to side with the OP on this one. Sure it will create lots of problems with the rising price of everything, but it will take a lot of people out of this consumerism bullshit we're wrapped up in and focus people on stuff that actually matters.

It will make people drive less, that's for damn sure. It already is. The less people drive to places that they don't need to drive to the better. Walking/bike riding/public transportation not only teaches people patience, but social interaction. Cars turn people into assholes with zero tolerance for people making mistakes while driving.

They seem to think that the piece of metal they are driving is more important than the person in front of them who isn't paying attention to the red light that just turned green. I have never seen such behavior like than whenever people get into cars.

The poverty stricken obviously will be hit hard by this, and I really do feel for them. But I think overall, a rise in prices and a bit of recession in this country will do us all some good.

why glad about gas prices being up?

it just doesn't effect cars. it effects everything.

a gallon of milk is now around $5.59 per gallon because of gas... they use oil to make the plastic containers it holds.. gas to transport feed to farms... transport milk to bottling plants... same thing goes with other every day products.

A rather insular little worldview you have there. As pointed out, high petroleum prices WILL effect you, no matter what you think now.

It's exactly this dependence on oil for everything that makes it so important that we get off the poison as soon as possible.  Somebody else said, the rising prices should in the long run cause 1) development of alternative energies, 2) building of tighter communties, and 3) localized food growing.

Plastic containers off-leech nasty toxins anyway, so why not go back to glass, something the can be made on the spot in most regions?  If you have a dairy farm, why not plant your own grass to feed your cows and eliminate the feedstore middleman?  The only reason why not is that petroleum-based plastic is still cheaper, and oil is still cheap enough that petroleum-based fertilizers (to grow animal feed) and fossil fuel transportation of food over long distances both remain practical solutions.  Rising oil prices will change this.

I live in the boonies of PA where everything is a distance from each other; it is just not feasible to walk everywhere.  In fact, it takes 2 hours to walk JUST outside of my community.  It takes an additional hour to get to any "nearby" stores or shopping centers.

In metropolitan areas, cars are a luxury; however, in rural areas, it's just not possible to get anywhere unless you are willing to walk 5+ hours.  Tack on intense heat and a fleet of stinging insects and you've got yourself a great time huh?  :runaway:

The whole argument of "we need to develop alternate sources of energy" is a bit of  joke.
For decades, we have been trying to develop alternate sources of energy.  Solar, wind, hydro.  Sure, they do produce energy, but the production of said methods requires burning of fossil fuels.  How do you think the windmills are made?  Or the silicon in solar panels? Or how do you think the concrete gets to the damn site?
The most cost effective and efficient alternate fuel source is nuclear.  Everyone knows the downside to when that fails, though.
And bio-fuels?  Well, they too require old fashioned fossil fuels to produce.  Plus, gas mileage is a fraction of what ya get with gasoline.

Bottom line is Yes, we need a better way.  This is not a new way of thinking.

But the truth is, we are decades away from the point of efficient, renewable fuel sources.  We may see hints of it in our lifetime, but only hints.

And for the natural gas fans out there, that also requires  the use of fossil fuels to mine.

I'm not in favor of gas price hikes, but I also realize that the love of wasteful vehicles is just that... wasteful.  I just get annoyed when I hear answers like "we need to find other fuels".  Thats a bullshit argument.

What I can't stand is the legions of bicycle riders who insist that they're doing their part in fighting global warming and rising gas prices.

yeah yeah, every little bit counts, I know, but to make a difference we're talking about dismantling the industrial economy.  I try to live as frugally and consciously as I can, but the solution is not at the consumer level.

The system is entrenched now, and the drastic changes that need to be made will be done too little, too late.  ALL resources are going to get scarce, the best thing to do is to pay attention and try and be ready for anything.

There have been people starving since the beginning of humanity.  Only now that we westerners are experiencing a bit of their plight has that become significant to us.  We North Americans have tremendous latitude to make adjustments to our lifestyles, citizens of poorer countries are already stretched a bit thinner.  But they have already had to learn not to take what they have for granted, North Americans not so much.  Hopefully this is our chance to learn a healthy way to react to not getting what we want.  If so, we will be better for it.

Everything will be more expensive.  Maybe a lot more.  I would not consider that the dark ages.  This could save us.  Look around you at the things people spend their money on, even today: iPhones, KFC, television, large vehicles, large homes, pharmaceuticals they don't need, expensive clubs and restaurants, uninspired movies, designer clothing, french nails, cigarettes, potato chips, handbags, tattoos, Red Bull, Head On, porn, psychic hotlines, WoW, drugs and alcohol.

I am not judging these purchases; people can buy whatever they want, but they may find they are going to want to cut out some of the more impulsive and superfluous purchases they make.  Yet it is precisely these unnecessary purchases that the US economy has been built on.  The economy will shrink; and it should.  Since the beginning it has grown strong for two reasons:  1) Americans are generally dissatisfied with their lives, and 2) Americans have been trained to believe that well-being can be purchased.  Big business knows this two-stroke cycle intimately and they will do anything to keep people wanting things they do not have.  We have been led around by our chronic unhappiness for over a hundred years now, in the insane cycle of want, spend, get bored, want, spend, get bored.  This huge economy, whose benefits we are so attached to, can only be sustained by millions of unhappy people trying to buy their way out of unhappiness.  It's the unhealthiest, most destructive human mechanism in the world.

Unaffordable gas prices just might be the catalyst we need to snap out of it.  Finally people will realize that it doesn't make sense to follow our wants as far as they'll take us, that WE have to adjust, rather than make the world adjust to us.  If saving starving people in foreign countries is truly important to us, we will be much better able (and willing!) to do that once we get our own shit together.

All good points.  However, given the nature of people in general, and Americans in particular, I do not think we will be as likely to "snap out of it" as some will find creative, even illegal, methods of getting the conveniences they have become used to.

My prediction parallels Visionary Tools': a Dark Age perhaps unparalleled to anything we have known by experience.

As food prices rise, as they most assuredly will, given the rising costs of fuel, North Americans will be far more interested in putting food on the table than worrying about other citizens of the world, imo.

Im  pretty sure "the powers that be" have suppressed alternative energy technologies.

Now, I believe, in a time of desperation, as profits drop.. a new competitive market for alternative energies may come available.

Alternative energy should be seen as an oppurtunity to cash in, and not as a threat.

What is the news saying about the gas hikes - and what are peoples reactions in North America? (im travelling right now.)

Really?  I guarantee you the American government is working feverishly to ensure that we survive the switch from petroleum at any cost.  They aren't retards.  I wouldn't be surprised if they already have some alternative in the wings but are just letting the petroleum economy work itself out before they introduce it.

The only reason oil is getting "scarce" is because there is a conspiracy to make it so. That's the ultimate way to tax people without any choice, any arguement. Because "Oh, peak oil. Fuck you, pay us more."

To anyone that's heard about abiotic fuel theroy, or finds it suspicious that no new oil refineries have been built since the 70's, I reccomend you read "The energy non-crisis" by Lindsey Williams

I do think that CARS are necessary.  SUV's and GIANT lifted trucks that get 4 MPG's highway are a ridiculous status symbol.  And yes I love to watch people in those huge vehicles floor it while I giggle to my self knowing that they just dumped 10 dollars down the drain just to go flying past me showing off their ride.  I drive a Kia Spectra GSX.  gets 35 mpg and I've had it for 5 years, surprisingly it is the only model kia ever made that has such good reviews that market resale value has actually gone up in the last couple years.

But truth be told.  If gas prices rise to 10$ a gallon, public transit will go up because THEY USE GAS.  The cost of your bike will go up because the parts are produced in a factory that no doubt uses energy to produce, and then they have to be shipped which also USES GAS.

I kinda understand your argument, but to hope on Gas prices rising is like hoping that your rent goes up tomorrow, along with your food and literally everything you ever spend a single dollar on.  And with that accelerated rate of inflation due to gas prices say good goodbye to the hope of your retirement ever growing faster than the prices of daily living!
