Re: I think society raises its young to be weak. [Re: Knifey Mcstab]

I'm not sure exactly what you mean. Do you think that children should have responsibility thrust upon them at a young age? Or that they should have to under go hard experiences to make them better people?

I think them having the freedom to explore and enjoy themselves actually make them better people. At least they know that the world can be good and when they see bad things happen in the world they don't think its normal. The bad parts of the world are meant to be upsetting, its the most natural and healthy response. Ive met two people who's fathers "hardened" them up as children. Both of them think it was harmful and made the rest of their lives more difficult rather than preparing them for anything.

Yeah, I don't agree with the general sentiment of this thread. Regarding the title:
"I think society raises its young to be weak."
The young are weak. That's why we protect them.

Yeah, let them have their sissy birthday parties, but on every birthday they get a mini-glock each and they have to duel with their then best friend to the death

Lets raise them cold bastards so they will grow up even colder and more ruthless than the generation before them.

Um, no.

My childhood was a living hell and it messed me up, if I with all that also wasn't spared any ugliness of the adult world, I probably wouldn't have made it.

You're forgetting that Western Society today bears little resemblance to reality like it should be. Kids aren't spoiled at all.

There is VERY LITTLE parenting. Both parents work full workdays, or its a single parents working twice as hard just to make ends meet.

Kids nowadays get very little love and quality time. The schedules their parents live under make the kids a burden to them. The lack of love and quality time is bought off with material goods.

Kids aren't spoiled at all, they are abused by societies ways and if they don't like it we stuff them full of amphetamine and ritalin and prozac and microwave pizzas so they will STFU.

I think we need to raise our children to be tough kind of like the way Native Americans used to.

You'd have to ask a Native American, but chances are he or she would find the current way cruel, not by hardships but by the sheer fucked-upness of how things are now. There is a difference between toughness and conveying a strong sense of morals and justness, and just letting kids ferment in daycare centers, unloved, pilled up, as robots of a society alienated to the nature of Man.

You let children be children in a harmless little world, then comes a Rite Of Passage most terrible, and afterward they are considered adults in every way. Thats how it should be.

We have all these fuzzy little childhood comforts for our kids. I think this teaches children a false reality. Look at the childrens programs on TV! Look at the countless books and toys along with the other brain numbing comforts. I'm not against a good childhood, in fact, I loved mine! Unfortunately, it makes for a nasty wake up call that I think many children are unprepared for. I think we need to raise our children to be tough kind of like the way Native Americans used to. Our children should be fully prepared for what is going to hit them. Prepare them for the harshness of reality and not a perfect happy kiddy paradise. That's my 2 cents at least...

People rely on society to raise their children and since our society is very very litigous, any business that caters to the child demographic (or any for that matter) carries increased liabilities.  The corporations that shape what we consider to be society, have no choice but to be pussified.

If you don't want pussy little kids, turn off your T.V., whip their ass if they need it, and fucking raise them yourself.

Also... take their toys, give them a stick and a rock and leave them alone.  They'll be fine... let them use their imagination.

I'm not sure if that was sarcasm or not, but growing up stick, rock, and whatever else I could scrounge up in the woods where pretty much all I had. My parents never really bought me toys. Kids tend to be happy with what ever they have, and as a result, I've always been content with what I have. Its probably the reason I'm the only person I know not in debt.

HOW DARE YOU INSULT BOOHBAH!

That's seriously the best show ever. You're either 1) an idiot or 2) never smoked weed

On a second though, if you bring a child into an environment of what is actually going on, it will not be as painful as if you raise then in a boohbah environment and then at a random age show them death, propaganda, "terrorism", genocide, etc.

I agree that children have a nasty wake up call when they reach adulthood, but I don't agree that their is some way of raising them that will make them able to face the horror of life.

To make them "strong" without showing them what's out there would be pointless, as they would have no reference to understand what's going to happen. The only way to truly make them understand is to traumatize them, and at that point you've diminished their psychological ability to absorb negative events. Sufferers of trauma overreact to situations because they don't have a healthy coping mechanism. The only thing to do with children is to make them happy and healthy and hope they turn out right.

The fact that happiness and strength in contemporary life are no match for the soul destroying rigors of the way we live is a BIG SIGN telling you not to have children. What adult in their right mind would bring an innocent child into this world? Abortion: best invention since fire and the wheel.

Society is evolving to raise its children just the way it needs to.  Humanity is going past instinct and culture and is entering the age of technology, and children need to intuit this new phenomenon.  Did anyone read The God Delusion :flames: where Dawkins talks about the notion of teaching children through computer simulation to intuitively understand notions such as multi-dimensional space and galactic/quantum -scale physics?  We might need a more natural 'feeling' of such concepts rather than accessing them purely through mathematics.

It kind of saddens me.  It's not our children that are the first to suffer though, its been happening for a long time.    Ever since we stopped living in small communities and speaking with our ancestor spirits.  The old human way has been dying for a long time, and we are going to go through a really difficult phase for a long time to come.  I hope it brings the birth of something richer and perhaps more beautiful, and that we never forget how we used to live.

I think that each successive generation for at least the last hundred years has been generally unhappier than the one before.

The world has always been fucked up. If you want to have kids, you want them to have a happy life, so you do things to make them happy. The only time in a persons life you actually live in a perfect world is when you are a kid and mom and dad take care of you and everything you need to survive. You just play and have fun most of the time. I think if we raised our kids hard and only give them what they need as adults, we are stealing their childhood.

Childhood is supposed to be fun and full of learning. I want to protect my kids from everything bad instinctively. I love watching their eyes light up at simple things. Society doesn't raise kids to be weak, they raise them to be people. Who wants to raise a bunch of hard asses? What would the world be like then? I think everyone should live their lives with their inner child. I do and it makes the world a happy place.

The USA sucks in some ways, but i live in relative peace and good health. I don't walk down the street wondering for my safety all the time. The world isn't that bad, but it's the bad people that make it the way it is. I bet most of the bad people were kids that didn't have good childhoods. I'm not saying everyone that had a bad childhood will be bad people, but i bet most ones that are bad WERE raised in the worst conditions. No one wants their kids to be bad people when they grow up. So the only thing you can do is try to raise them right, and try to raise them happy.

I don't raise my kids weak, i raise them to be good happy people. Well, thats the idea anyways. I'm not ruining their childhood with stories of how the real world is, i try to raise them to find their happy place in the world. I don't think the world is as bad as some say it is. I think it's all perspective. I can't understand the people that say they won't have kids cause the world isn't perfect. So what! Grow a pair and take the chance. Kids are great. The worst possible thing that could have happened in my life would be that i never was born. I think you have to come to terms with the world around you, and not see all the bad stuff. There are alot of good things in this world too.

You can raise kids in a loving home, offer them creature comforts, support them, give them "technology", and have them turn out just fine.

It's called "parenting" and teaching kids the values they need to succeed in the "real-world".

You can certainly teach kids how to live without being "harsh" and cold.

.

And you say you live in the US?

Do you really live here or do you live in a "pretend" America?

Seriously though, I completely agree with your parenting philosophy 100%. My parents had the same ideas with me, and I had a relatively happy childhood, barring a few major issues. Still in all good faith I would never have a child, even knowing I could provide the best possible childhood for them. I cry when my cat has to go to the vet; I don't think I could put up with a kid getting raped or going to prison.

I don't know about that. Have you seen teenagers lately? They're fuckin gansta's.  They're crazy, they'll do anything to anyone.

I agree that all the hightech toys are probably ruining these kids' imaginations.
