I'm going to repeat what I just said. If it were possible, I would say it more slowly this time...
"Where in the article was the claim that parents should sit their kids in front of the TV and expect them to learn all they need to know? It wasn't there. Quit bitching about every little thing just to be counter-culture."

~Blow me.
The whole idea of the Cookie monster getting an image makeover supports that, as it suggests that children are that impressionable, and that parents can't teach them the logic that indeed it's just a fuckin' tv show.
If kids are dumb enough to follow a puppets image, they deserve to be fat.
Counter-Culture? I'm implying it's up to the parents, and that we don't need to PC the world's image. If I were to be counter-culture, I'd suggest the kids rot in hell, and go to McDonald's and live it up with the hamburglar.

I come into contact with a lot of people who have kids in addition to demanding careers. This is how many parents raise their kids in this area (seattle). They work all day every day and keep their kids at day care centers (where they watch TV all day) or leave them at home with babysitters (where they sit and watch TV all day). Many kids spend more time in front of the TV than they do talking and being with their parents. These very kids are the same kids who's parents are pushing for changes like this cookie monster BS. I talk to these parents every day. I see how they treat their kids.
I get the impression that your aggressive accusations of us being counter-culture just for the sake of it are driven by a similar counter-counter-culture foolishness

OK I'll boil it down.
You people are saying that changing cookie monster is a superficial cure-all band-aid to make the show's creators feel better about themselves.
I'm saying that it's not intended to be cure-all. It's an adaptation of an educational program in response to kids' cravings for junk food. Those cravings, I believe, do come from television. The people that make Sesame Street don't want to contribute to that sort of negative advertisement.
I'm sorry I lashed out. And you're right Turd.

Dude, we're talking about 4 year olds here.

What I say still stands...
If kids are dumb, it's a result of their parents in most cases (not in all such as retardation/autism and other genetic factors)
I dunno, I never watched Sesame street when I was that age, and felt it necessary to consume copious amounts of cookies just because I saw it on tv. Give children the benefit of the doubt is all I'm suggesting, a stupid ass kid, ultimately is going to be a stupid ass kid, a hell of a lot has to do with their parent's supervision and guidance.

Some very good points made here, but still and all, the Cookie monster on a diet? It seems, I dunno, wrong somehow. I grew up on Sesame Street, but my favorite was The Count, anyway. I guess I was a weird little kid......
