We have all these fuzzy little childhood comforts for our kids. I think this teaches children a false reality. Look at the childrens programs on TV! Look at the countless books and toys along with the other brain numbing comforts. I'm not against a good childhood, in fact, I loved mine! Unfortunately, it makes for a nasty wake up call that I think many children are unprepared for. I think we need to raise our children to be tough kind of like the way Native Americans used to. Our children should be fully prepared for what is going to hit them. Prepare them for the harshness of reality and not a perfect happy kiddy paradise. That's my 2 cents at least...

Seems all the people I know who had shitty childhoods made their dreams come true. I think kids now days have EVERYTHING done for them, they can't even go on a 15 minute bus ride without their Ipods, PDAS, Cell phones and so on ...

What is going to hit them?

If you're talking about work, doesn't school prepare them adequately? Sure, not every kid will end up with a college degree and a well paying job, but the cogs of society will be filled and most people will find a living either themselves or through government charity (it all works out in the end).

Are you talking about the 'reality' of the world? As in the hypocrisies of our governments, the crushing depression that may follow the realization that buying that new car *doesn't* matter worth a damn, learning about how our society makes a quick buck by exploiting cheap labor in third world countries and crippling their economies, and all that friendly jazz? If that's what you're talking about, I'd have to say that a *lot* of grown adults could easily be considered children living in a 'perfect happy kiddie paradise' by those standards.

I couldnt agree more. When i see the way my relatives treat my little cousins as though they are the centre of the universe it makes me sick.

life is about learning to deal with hardships. Imho having ones every need met makes one weaker as the op says.

Where as taking responsibility for oneself is an empowering experience.

Well  I live in my capitol city, i dont know if you were refering to me or not though

by the way if you have visited any large city, particularly the financial district. you will se that they are indeed the  best examples of this im the centre of the universe ego that im talking about

I'd much rather my kids watch TV than work in a sweat shop making shoes for Nike.

That said, most children's TV is crap. I reckon I'll probably restrict them to Sesame Street (assuming it's still going by then). Cartoons suck.

i didnt have a disney childhood or anything, i wasnt really ever given anything but a roof and food. i have always worked for what i want, even before i was a teenager. if you saw me in public driving my new car, talking on my blackberry and wearing a LaCoste shirt and Movado you would most likely think i was given all that shit, take it for granted, and am "one of those kids." i grew up in a shitty part of town and have no intention of going back to that kinda shit, and I might appear to be a bit of a douche, but i'm a far shot from a weakling.

im not sure how normal this is, but you shouldn't underestimate people. i meet weak people regularly, but ive also met a lot of people that i wouldnt mind having around when the shit goes down.

It scared the shit out of me when I saw a thing on TV about that Fisher&Price bike piece of crap that you hook up to the TV, and the kid "learns" whilst he's riding along.

What it's fucking teaching him, is that the only friend he'll ever need is his TV. I don't get what the point of that was, why not stick him back outside in the backyard with his trike?

What the fuck has it come to when parents are literally "buying" friends for their kids in the form of digital 'entertainment'

when I was younger (which wasn't all that long ago), in primary school, all the kid were coming to school anbd talking about what cool cartoons were on in the morning. i never watched TV in the mornings, dunno why it just never fancied me, and i never really had the time to watch TV.

It's not that i had a choice or was told not to, i just didn't. I don't know if it made a difference.

But you're rihgt, it scares me when I walk down the street and see parents with kids as young as 6-7 with mobile phones, even if they aren't connected to any networks, they are still given "toy" phones to "ween" them into technology and make us grow up with the idea impregnated in our brain that they are just something that is always a "necessity" or an unspoken compulsory accessory.

I don't get it.

I'm only 20 myself, but I never remember techonology being so prominent when I was remember. Even I had minimal TV shows and whatnot when I was a toddler, but my aunt has raised her whole family on TV, and I'm not kidding.

She has a 10 month old son who does absolutely nothing but watch TV. She is some fucked up churchy, and spends fuck all time with this kid, she's got 4 others that have grown up and are... weird. this toddler cries when it's in its crib and the TV isn't turned on.

I could go on and on, but I won't because noones going to read this anyway, but I think you are right. I don't know if there is an evil corporate shadow that is pulling strings to make kids more technologically reliant, or maybe this as well as being fed by the consumer demand of needing to be "hip" and decked out with the latest fucking gadgets to make our lives complete and whole, it's no longer about luxury items, luxury has become a necessity now and it's getting really fucked up.

also, I want to say that I think I was relatively spoiled in my childhood, and found it hard to accept that I had to work for what I want. I have been more or less totally independent for about 3 years now since moving out of home at 17. It took me a little while, but I've come right now I think, but I feel worried that I was extremely close to being completely incapable of looking after myself. I went back to school, twice, as a kind of semi-cop out to having responibility. Living on student allowance (free money) for the simple chore of going to school was appealing, but after that I got quite sick of it and decided I needed to face up and grow up, which I did... but a lot of my friends weren't so fortunate, and are still taking money from their parents at this age, which I don't know is normal, but I haven't taken money from my parents in about 2 years

My parents didn't let me watch TV in the mornings. Then one day when I was home from school sick, I went out to the living room in the morning and turned the TV on... man it was crap. I lost interest in cartoons after that.

It occurred to me the baby boomer generation can say the exact same thing about us. We've all just grown up, and have a hard time accepting how spoiled kids are today. We take many things for granted that weren't available during the 60's and 70's.
