scotts 3 in 1 question
    #850657 - 08/29/02 09:08 AM (14 years, 4 months ago)

in night trains pic i t looked as if his compost was still dark when his mushies were growing. a friend has some growing and the mycilium is completely overtaking everything. it looks like it snowed in the fuiting container. should he just let it go, or case it likehe does other bulk methods?

Not Casing......
*higher risk of it getting the funk ...
*Less work

Casing the top layer.....
*Protects the mycelium from the funk
*Adds more support for the fat mushrooms ( using oyster shells and such )
*more Work

well your gonna be pissed because i've never used 3in1 but i can answer your question.
It's great that yours looks like that. Compost/ wormcasins go all white with mycellium when there effective ie not bunk.
I've seen this many rime. Also don't case it'll fruit tremendously without any casing.
dies this count?
or not?
haven't tried 3in1 they don't carry it in my area

A guy I don't really know has a small tray of 3-n-1 spawned with 2 PF Stropharia cakes. It just started showing pins yesterday and there is PLENTY of dark spots on the surface. He does not have this cased as he did it "Just to see" what would happen. He is happy to see it pinning after just about two weeks!
I am still learning my ass off regarding casing, but perhaps it is time to cold shock and introduce light if you hadn't already
I think that if this thing gets through the first flush with no contams, he is going to try covering it with coco fiber

thanks p-junk, and everyone else. my friend just went to his grow room and said that all his boxes are almost completely white and that knots are forming. he also is going back to lowes to pick up their last 15 bags of 3 in 1. he must be really impressed. thanks again everyone.

i can't give a hard figure yet, ellisdee, on yields for 3-n-1 as i'm still in the midst of getting in my first flushes.
also, i've using varying amounts of rye spawn so of course
that will affect yield as more rye=more shrooms.
but from what i've seen so far i'd tend to think that there's not as much dung in the 3-n-1 as i'd like, prolly only about 30% dung, so it's not going to boost yields as much as an equal amount of straight dung.
i did one small 'cake' of 3-n-1 where i spawned it with a single pf cake, it's on it's 2nd flush now, but so far the yield has only been 'average'.
it's just going to take some more time to see how many flushes i get, etc.
but overall the impression i'm getting is that the 3-n-1 is a great casing material and works ok as a bulk substrate but could prolly benefit from both heavy use of grain spawn and supplementation with more dung or cottonseed meal, etc.

(for purposes of quicker typing i will refer to my friend in the first person )
hey hippie, i am using a pint of fully colonized birdseed for every 2.25 quarts of compost/vermiculite. it took about 9 or 10 days for the bags to fully colonize. i put 2 and 3 bags per box so that i would have half of my boxes fruiting with deep substrates and have with medium to shallow substrates to see, under identical conditions, what the actual weight and flush differences are. after 10 days, i am starting to see hyphoidal knots. when this is done, i will post a grow log and share my findings.

My cat had that problem. He had is tub in a window cell. Kitty moved it into a closet, dropped the temperature and put a flour over it on a timer. The snow went under the surface and a beatiful flush came in a week or two latter.

it probally is too hot in your tub or it is getting too much light.

After many experiments, the squirrel that frequents my back door looking for peanuts told me he really does not care too much for the Scotts 3-1. The flushes were nice but the fruits were lacking. He said they were bigger and more plentiful than the cakes, but nothing to really get excited over. He has some horse poo he is going to try that next.
