Why is being high taboo in Western culture?
    #8483071 -

If you look at most of the drugs that are outlawed and scheduled, there are many things they do NOT have in common, such as the real danger someone faces using them, their mechanism of action, addiction potential, accessibility, etc. The one common thread among them, more than anything else, is that they get you high, in one way or another. It seems that no matter how benign a substance - like pot or kratom - if it gets you high, nobody should have access to it without some medical justification. Great lengths are taken to ensure that people do not get high - that they do not experience levels of pleasure outside of the mundane day to day norms.

I realize we live in a repressive culture, but I want to know why people think this is. What about our culture wants to keep people from experiencing high levels of pleasure and enjoyment? I think the religious background of our culture has had some undoubted influence on this repression, as it does sexually as well, but it goes deeper. Is being high taboo because society at large is scared of losing productivity? Because they don't think people can be moderate and responsible when it comes to the pleasures that drugs bring? Or is it something else?

Undoubtedly there are multiple reasons that run deep and stem off from each other, and many will probably have different theories on why substances are not welcome.
But I would like to point out one that aggravates me the most. Often with getting high on psychedelics (mild- marijuana to stronger- LSD types) causes introspection and new perspectives on the surrounding world.
A frequent realization is the fact that consumerism is BS. Keeping up with the Jones', needing brand names, the newest, fanciest shit. Its all garbage and used to make us work hard just to give our money back to some fat cats. Slaves to the wage, peasants if you will. Personally I have noticed that a majority of people who smoke marijuana (either in my own circles or just in general) are less interested in superficial distractions. Not a very objective observation...but still. Obviously this type of free thought is the natural enemy of consumerism.
This also can stem into other types of societies/social interaction. Simply put, eyes are often opened to exploitation by the wealthier elite, and also the simpler day to day egotistical abuse humans put on one another, to feed their own ego.
Its easier to control the blind, who claw at eachother, than it is to deal with those whos eyes are open and see the truth.

If people realize that they don't need the media to keep them entertained, they lose money? It's a possibility.

I think, more realistically, people in power just have been brainwashed over the years and think it's just inherently wrong. I'd imagine it has a lot to do with racism and cultural nationalism as well.

I believe its because some drugs open up your mind so much that you actually become conscious, and wake up from the materialistic ratrace of what is today.
Boots', your right, we definately do not need media to keep us entertained, but to them its all about money and fame.

I like the bill hicks qoute:
"I think it's interesting the two drugs that are legal - alcohol and cigarettes, two drugs that do absolutely nothing for you at all - are legal, and the drugs that might open your mind up to realise how you're being fucked every day of your life? Those drugs are against the law. Coincidence? See, I'm glad mushrooms are against the law, cos I took 'em one time, you know what happened to me? I laid in a field of green grass for four hours, going, 'My God, I love everything.' Yeah, now if that isn't a hazard to our countries...How are we gonna justify arms dealing if we know we're all one?"

i think you are correct that it is being "high" that is the taboo, and not the introspection. after all, it may be a social more to talk about psychology or philosophy in many situations, but they are accepted in universities. any pleasure that approaches sexual ecstasy approaches taboo status (this is why, despite their known psychological effects aldous huxley urged leary not to "let the sexual cat out of the bag - to relate the psychedelic experience to the public as a sexual experience). sex is common in the media but only as a power game, or else to sell you something.

I think everyone here so far is right. The only other point that I can think of is that in the west drugs are taboo, and in the east alcohol is taboo. Probably has to do with religion.

The people who make those laws are not specifically trying to fuck anybody. They honestly believe that drugs bring about immorality and debauchery. I don't agree in the least with that but there are more of them then there are drug users. They are trying to protect us, which is begrudgingly admirable. They're just misinformed.

It is used? I'm positive that the desire of which you speak arises within individuals themselves. Of course those seeking to profit would cater to that. Fair trade in my opinion. What motivates an individual is a decision that they make on their own. Standards might be held by others and individuals may or may not be prone to imitating them, after all humans are prone to imitate, but to think that these standards are "manufactured" belies the nature of it all. Phenomenons naturally arise and are not contained.

I know you are speaking on the issue of consumer culture...
But, I feel that a big part of it is the dominant reality myth.
Like, "Don't eat that or you will surely die..."
"Don't eat that because that was the original fuck up."
Manufactured to the T.  Perfect.
That is Satan.  Don't.  This seems pretty unnatural an observation.
And I maintain that those writing these particular stories knew exactly what they had in mind.
And you see it today.  Sad.:mad2:
