    #835398 - 08/22/02 07:04 AM (22 years, 3 months ago)

Has anybody ever succeded in growing caesarea?
I'm trying to get some caps to print some spores right now.

Any suggestion?

Thanx

Nobody has successfully cultivated any Amanita to fruiting bodies. They are all mycorrhizal species. Species to be cultivated must basically be saprophytes. There has been some success with a few mycorrhizal species through cultivating the proper host plant and innoculating them with the fungus to be cultivated, but I assume you didn't want to start an orchard.

But don't let that stop you. Just because nobody has yet doesn't mean it's impossible. If you succeed, you can be very wealthy. Expect it to not be easy. Good luck!

I could give it a try. In the garder there are a few good trees (pine trees, are they good?).

I've seen spore syringes for muscaria on sale; maybe I should try and ask somebody who succeeded in that firts.

You should probably try the local college library for some research on what trees the Amanita you want grows with. In Colorado I find Amanita muscaria under lodgepole pine, or, at higher altitudes, under engelmann spruce, blue spruce, and subalpine fir.

You are aware, I hope, that the Amanitas are not good for use as recreational drugs. I know several people who have tried them, and they *all* say they wouldn't do it again. The reports are all that the experience is definitely not pleasant. I'm sure you can find somebody somewhere who will disagree, but count how many people think they're great versus those who think they suck.

Thank you for your suggestions, but I don't want to try muscaria... Amanita Caesarea has one of the tastiest flesh and funny shape I've ever found in a mushroom: try them if you never did... Here in Europe they're amongst the best gourmet mushrooms (especially in Italy).

I would love to try Amanita caesarea, but it's not available. The species here which we call A. caesarea is possibly not the same species as in Europe (it just resembles it closely). And those who have tried both say that the one here is not nearly as good as the European ones. To my knowledge, the US version has only been found once here in Colorado, so I will have to travel to get some.

By all accounts the European Amanita caesarea is a great edible, and I hope you can find a way to cultivate it. Perhaps then it will become available enough for even us poor USians to get some to eat.
