Ok...Im going to spawn some WBS to Petsmart coco coir pretty soon.At first I was going to pasteurize it..then the peeps told me past. coir isn't necessary..as coir comes kinda sterile.Then,they just said hydrate it with boiling water in a cooler..and wait for it to cool down.Then just get handfuls and squeezing out the moisture as I go.However..I bought some Reynold's oven bags yesterday.Oven bags+big pot of water=good??Should I hydrate the coir with boiling water,then load an oven bag with field-capacity coir..then place in a pot of water and "cook it"??By cooking it I mean turning the heat until the water is simmering..or boiling,and then just leave it there for an hour or so.Then let it cool in the pot.Is this better than just hydrating with boiling water(more sterile)??I want to be as safe as I can when I do my first spawn run.So would this extra step be helpful to the coir..or should I skip it cus coir doesn't need to be pasteurized??
PS:I don't have a meat thermometer..so I'm just gonna "eye"it so the water stays simmering/boiling.Am I safe??

Pasteurize it fool!

Why would you risk a (very likely) contamination vector for the sake of a few dollars? (ie. go buy a thermometer for $5).

I wouldn't trust a project to the assumption that your coir comes pre-pasteurized.

If I were you I would invest in a probe type thermometer with a wire that plugs into the digital readout/timer. Polder makes good ones for $12. Here's why.

If you sterilize coir, you kill off beneficial organisms that will prevent contams like trich from colonizing your substrate before your mycelium. You want to pasteurize coir for 1 hour between 140-170 deg F. 155 is optimal. If you go over 180 you're damaging the immunity of the coir, so don't use boiling water.

Some people here advocate pouring 1 gal of 170 deg. water in a cooler and shutting the lid for an hour. That will probably work just fine.

I've heard a better (but more time consuming) method is to pour 1 gallon of 170 deg water over a brick, then as soon as it's not painful to handle, squeezing it to field capacity and loading into jars. You'll get 7-8 jars. Lid and tent with foil. These jars are to be placed in your pressure cooker WITHOUT the weight on top. Fill the PC with hot tap water halfway to 2/3 up the jars and insert your thermometer probe into the dead center of the centermost jar in your PC and make sure you tent foil over the probe.

Just play with your stove settings until you find the 155 deg sweet spot and keep it there for an hour. You can use the same method with your 50/50 casing.

The tek I describe above is my interpretation of RR's tek.

Let's say I was homeless,and I didn't buy a thermometer,can I just past. in the stove with an oven bag by simply boiling water.Or is this temp too high??Surely if I boil the oven bag for maybe an hour..the insides will be more than past??

Boiling is BAD. Sterilizing your coir is BAD and poses an unnecessary contamination risk. If you can afford oven bags you can afford a thermometer.

212 degrees Fahrenheit...more or less;)..I think lol.Anyways..sure I can probably buy a thermometer..where should I look?Kmart??Also,what if I simply simmer the water..not boil it??

Temperatures of water:

Water boils at 212°F (sea level), and simmers at 190°F.

Tepid Water - 85 to 105°F. The water is comparable to the temperature of the human body.

Warm Water - 115 to 120°F. The water is touchable but not hot.

Hot Water - 130 to 135°F. The water is too hot to touch without injury.

Poach - 160 to 180°F. The water is beginning to move, to shiver.

Simmer - 185 to 200°F. There is movement, and little bubbles appear in the water.

Slow boil - 205°F. There is more movement and noticeably larger bubbles.

Real boil - 212°F. The water is rolling, vigorously bubbling, and steaming.

You don't need to start a new thread every time you encounter the tiniest of stumbling blocks. There are already a billion threads on how to pasteurize substrates the right way. Put a little effort into what you're doing here, and you'll get a lot more respect from the community. Every time you cut corners and try to save time, or effort, you put your grow a little closer to failure. Pasteurize your coir!! And, do it right. Take the extra time, and spend the extra $20 to get whatever it is you need to do it right. You'll be glad you did.

Seriously, pasteurization is retard easy, and the tek you linked in your post above is perfect for what you're doing. Follow it and quit trying to skimp. You'll be glad you did it right when you're looking at trays full of mature mushrooms, and not three pins on a cake you cut corners on.

Watch out for those reynolds oven bags. I was past. some hpoo and when I took it out of the pot the bottom of the bag opened and shit went everywhere, looked like a shit bomb went off in my kitchen. I even double bagged it and put a small towel in the bottom of the pot so the bag wouldnt be in direct contact with the heat.

I appreciate your input Defone(no Im not being sarcastic).I understand that I have cut corners in the past,but not because of me being lazy,but because I didn't have the funds for the correct supplies.I enjoy this hobby ALOT ,and I will try to pursue mycology as best I possibly can.You must understand Im new..but over time,Ill have all the supplies and knowledge to do things the right way.About the Reynold's bags and your "shitty"day,can I just simply hold the bag like a baby so it doesn't happen to me??

u can, but u still have to pick it up and out of the pot(the bag will stretch a little). These bags have a weak seal at the bottom. Im not trying to discourage u from trying it out though, cuz ppl here do swear by it. I just got shitty luck i guess.

Sounds terrible. Follow the teks. Buy a thermometer. I am really not trying to be a dick, but why are you asking for advice, and then doing whatever suits you? Every question you've asked can be found using the search engine.. Use it! Look, I'm trying to look out for you, but I can't make you succeed.

Can't you just oven pasteurize at 160F in the oven? - Heed RR's advice.
How I Make a Coir Bulk Sub. - It is so easy. I bought my thermometer for 5 DOLLARS. Save the receipt, and return the fucker when you're done with it if you're that broke.

Just do it right.

here is the method i use and i think it pretty much is the same thing as RRs method in theory instead replace qt jars with another pot. its called the pot in pot technique. it is agars tek tho btw so he gets all credit.
heres is link to the thread: HYDRATING & PASTEURIZING BULK SUBSTRATES PROPERLY

If you don't have, or want to use plastic bags.
Another method is pot-in-pot.



One stock pot, inside another.
Fill inner pot with squeeze tested substrate.
Insert probe thermometer & cover with a lid.
Fill outer pot 3/4 full of water.
Heat on a stove.
Get substrate core temperature to 165F & maintain 60-90 minutes.
Remove inner pot & allow to cool over night.
(with the lid on tight)

works really well for me, some tips tho are to use cold water to start and heat it up slowly, if you heat the water to hot and it begins to boil it will make a big mess and splash out, and will get the outsides of the inner pot way hotter than the center. making it harder to maintain correct internal temps. no offense to RR but cleaning qt jars is the biggest pain in the ass, but then again i dont have a dish washer and i have big hands so its hard to clean the insides.

I pasteurize in the oven with oven bags, but I have an oven with a digital temp control that goes down to 170F. I just hydrate my sub, put it in the oven bag, preheat the oven to 170 and put the bag on a cookie sheet with the opening tied in a loose knot for about 90 minutes. Most ovens go down to 200F and have a "warm" setting. I imagine the warm setting would be about right to do the same thing.

crazyoutlaw- you do ask a shitload of questions. If you want to find reliable answers with your searches, put one of the vets names in the "username" section when you do your searches to only find posts for that person. If you put RogerRabbit, Agar, Roadkill, etc you will find quick and accurate answers to your questions. I've seen about 5 threads started by you some days on the first page of the cult forum. Like defone is trying to tell you, you don't need to start a new thread for every little question that comes up.

My friend is not an experienced grower by any means, just a few grows under his belt, but all done with wbs spawned to coir. He just did the boiling water drench described earlier every time, and it's worked every time. No contams yet. Until about the third flush anyway.

The theory is that boiling water drops from boiling to the 170-180 degree level quite fast, and stays there for a bit. He just re-puts some boiling water in every 45 minutes twice and it's worked.

i have had no problems or contams just hydrating with hot water in a big bowl and squeezing...maybe im just lucky though:tongue:
