It usually comes in a brick that's shrink-wrapped and doesn't need to be sterilized or pasturized. Just add distilled water to expand it and use it as-is!
Simple huh?

Here's the best way. If you have good quality tap water..it will work as well. If your not going to use all of it (one brick is enough for a 40gal. aquarium.)Boil some water..take a few chunks off the brick put it in a bowl and add the boiling water. Use a wire wisk or such to make sure the chunks are spread out. Dont worry about adding to much water at this point. Once your done..let it sit for 20mins soaking in the hot water. Then I usually take a strainer and strain it then squeeze the excess water out.

PetSmart carries "Bed-A-Beast" - $4.95 a brick.
One brick will be enough to do 20-40 average (12"x18") casings. (depending on depth)

You'll find coir at a local pet shop known as 'Bed-a-Beast' (theres a few other names for it ) Almost impossible to miss. I'm sure you could buy it in bulk somewhere.
