Gotta go with the firecracker roll, wow!! Gotta have a rock n' roll in there to mix it up a bit.

I LOVE sashimi, but goodness it's easy to drop some major dollars that way.

Im not really picky, but I love crunchy spicy salmon, shrimp tempura, volcano rolls, rainbow , spider and calamari rolls. Also love eel sushimi. If you havent tried fried tempura, you gotta try it!

I only get one type of tempura, because it does take away some of the sushi-ness:smirk: and I go to sushi when it is has the half off special!!!for 15 bucks you can eat good

I went to buy some sashimi grade at a local fish place and man, it wasn't cheap there either. Still more bang for your buck, but for quite a few reasons, that stuff is high priced.

Let's see, sushi dinner or a half a tank of gas?? :strokebeard:

Eel is good
Giant clam is good
Sashimi (raw fish kind) is boring
Octopus is chewy
Sea Urchin is downright NASTY
Quail egg is still just an egg, no matter what you do to it

I love octopus and squid cooked. But I've only had it once raw at a very good sushi place and like you say, the texture is just blech.

Like soft rubber that you just cannot make any progress with.

I garuntee the octopus was cooked if it was rubbery. Raw octopus would just be a pile of goo.

i like pretty much anything with the raw seafood on top. but i think my favorite is the sea urchin. they also have the quail egg roll, which is rice wrapped in a seaweed leaf, topped off with a raw quail egg. its actually better than it seems.

Sushi is my favorite food ever. Hands down.

Hamachi is probably my favorite.... but I love me some toro also. Can't beat unagi either.

Generally speaking.. because sushi is an art. The fish is not cheap either (if you go to a good sushi place). A real sushi chef, will have at least 5-8 years of sushi training under his belt before he is "allowed" to be called a sushi chef. I used to work at a sushi bar (free sushi and miso 3 meals a day FTW.. god I miss that job).. but the owner/sushi chef, was born in Japan and worked as an apprentice and studied sushi there for 4 years before moving to Hawaii.. where he worked in another sushi restaurant and earned the title sushi chef after another 3 years. He told me in Japan, he had to learn how to make the RICE only, for an entire year.. before they even let him near the fish. Making the rice is an art unto itself as it has to be perfect.. and then cutting the fish is another art. Then putting it all together and making it into a nice presentation is another art. Real sushi is a very refined discipline. And you have the use the freshest and best of ingredients.

If you've ever gone to a cheap or ghetto sushi place, you can tell the difference. Many commercial sushi places just hire some guy, teach him how to do everything in a couple weeks, use inferior ingredients, etc.. and the result is shitty sushi. The difference between shitty sushi and amazing sushi is MASSIVE. It's all about the fresh fish really, and really perfect rice. The place I worked we got fresh fish every morning. If you live in the midwest or something or some places even use frozen fish or refrigerate their unused fish overnight.. which is pretty much a big no-no in sushi world.

So generally speaking, good sushi is always going to be at least somewhat expensive. It's not cheap in Japan either, although it is much more common there.

Man.. the sea urchin. That was the one thing I could never eat. You either love it or hate it. It's also the most expensive sushi. Some of the sushi connoisseurs would always order that shit... my boss made me try it 3 different times.. I almost puked every time.

You know what it is right? It's the ovaries/gonads of sea urchin. I think it was the texture and smell, that really threw me off. It looks like some orange puke from the bottom of the ocean.

The quail egg (Uzura) on top of roe I can handle. But the uni.. oh god.. I want to hurl just thinking about it.
