They definitely are "merits", but unfortunately.... bigger is not always better.

If you think that people should be judged by their merits and not their appearance, then why do you have a picture of yourself as your avatar? Because you want people to judge you by your appearance.

How do you know that?

In some ways, we are equal.. in other ways.. not at all.
But this is a very complex issue. I don't even pretend to know every angle but I'll attempt to explain my perspective of it.

While we do still live in a very male-dominated, patriarchal society for the most part.. women have come a very long way in the past 50 years. The women's rights movement gave a lot of advancement in some areas.. but in other ways I actually think it did a lot of harm also. Regardless of whether men and women should be equal in rights, education, the workplace, etc.. (and I think we should be), we are both humans. But there are in fact differences between the sexes. One in particular is that women give birth and are capable of creating life inside them. Most woman are nurturers by nature, more emotional then men and generally more intelligent in some ways. But with the rise of womens rights we have also seen a falling apart of the family unit... never before has the divorce rate been so high and there been so many failing marriages and dysfunctional families leading to very confused children. I don't mean to say that women should be subservient to men or do all the parenting, men have a role as parents as well. But I think that the movement has largely left some of those natural roles ambivalent and indistinct, in a number of ways. And many homes with both parents working and not at home to raise their kids. I think part of that has to do with how the "machine" has twisted the natural positive roles of men and women to negatives.

I'm not speaking for all women because of course there are exceptions. But a lot of women want "equality" without actually being equals. They want the same pay and that's fine, but don't want to do the same work. How many female construction workers and lumberjacks are there? Why do men have to have all the hard labor jobs? What about the woman that wants to be equals but expects the man to pay for dinner. Or how about the woman that thinks it's ok to hit a guy, but a guy hitting a woman is a mortal sin. These are just a few measly examples but it illustrates my point about how there is a double standard where many women demand 'equality' but don't expect to do the same. I don't think it's ever ok to hit a woman, and I think it's nice to pay for dinner, but if you want equality, be equal. But we're not. Men generally work the labor jobs because men are genetically bigger and stronger than women and more capable of that type of work. Most men do not run on emotions and we do not give birth. So right there, there are some very real differences. We should be equal mentally, spiritually, psychologically, etc.. but physically and genetically there are very real differences, not that one is better than the other.. just suited for different roles.

People are just people and male or female doesn't matter, it's who you are as a person that matters. Unfortunately our society being the way it is, woman are often portrayed as pieces of meat and sex objects, rather then goddesses/human beings. I'm not saying that an imbalance does not exist, I'm sure it does.. but this equality thing goes both ways. We still have a long ways to go, and women in general should definitely be treated with more respect. But these extreme feminists who demand equal rights without actually acting like an equal drive me nuts. You can't have your cake and eat it too. Double standards FTL.

No thats not why. . . I have it because its me. I dont have to hide behind some gay avatar because I'm self-conscious. Anyway my avatar isn't getting me a job or so you'll treat me differently. If you feel the need to judge me because of how I look go ahead. See if I give a shit. I'm sure you all can come up with some pretty nasty comments about how I look but keep them amongst yourselves, because thats not why I'm here.

Sorry adrug, I gotta side with Lndrydusting on this one, posting a pic of yourself doesn't mean that you're seeking to be judged accordingly (with the exception of certain angles and such).

Now to contradict Lndry, cmon now, this is a site where people frequently talk about illegal activities, you can't think less of anyone for NOT putting up their photo for everyone to see, either.

In appeearance? At sex? In life? At their job?

That is a pretty fucking shallow and stupid statement! If you don't think bigger is better then don't go there, but don't tell me fat chicks are less of a person because you don't like their look! Seriously. . . . . GROW THE FUCK UP!

The only reason women have gotten as many rights in the past 50 years as they have is because men allowed them to.

IMHO, men and women are mentally and spiritually equal, we walk together as equal, however we are not equal at everything.

Great thread.

To address a few things that came up:

This was in fact meant to be a gender thread, not a God thread. I used that story to lead into the real issue.

This thread was meant to discuss whether men and women are equal in the eyes of society at large. It goes without saying that men and women are far from equal physically, biologically and psychologically.

Personally, me view is the women who are treated the most fairly are those who so naturally view themselves as socially equal to men that they never even questioned whether they were or not.

By two best female friends are that way. To them, gender equality is a non-issue. I think its because they perceive and treat themselves as equal to men, they have a level of laid-back confidence that probably puts off a good few would-be gender discriminators.

And the few times that I have witnessed a man attempt to condescend to them or to hit on them in a gross and blatantly sexual manner they have demonstrated an incredibly tactful way of retaliating with a combination of body language, facial expression and a poignant quip. The message that comes across seems to simultaneously say "leave me alone, you're gross, and don't be silly". And she'll return to her business unimpeded and unphased. And thats why I love these women so much.
