F***ing BUGS!

I am really becoming frustrated with my outdoor grow efforts. Bugs keep eating my shrooms before they get a chance to mature. This has already happened before, but it happened again overnight. Yesterday I checked one of the three patches I have started in my yard. I was quite happy to see 8-10 nice looking pins (PF Stroph) about 3/4" tall. I have been sprinkling pepper (black and red) all around the area, and I placed a small tray with beer in it out there to deal with slugs (although I have never actually seen any). Anyway, I just went out to check and ALMOST ALL OF THEM HAVE BEEN GNAWED DOWN TO STUMPS! What the hell! I never actually see anything eating the shrooms, and the only bugs I really see are ants, but not on the shrooms themselves. Anyone have any ideas?

Where do I get my own trained fleas? I want them to bring the shrooms back home, though. Seriously though...If This keeps up I am going to have to abandon my outdoor efforts. Too frustrating as well as a waste of spawn.

There is a form of organic bug control that can be found at organic nurseries. I believe it is fossilized crustation shells ground to a powder, cant rember what it is called. But any hoo it lacerates the little buggies thus causeing them to dehydrate Works great on my tomatoes, and the thought of the bug slowly dehydrating makes me grin.

Hi,
I think you have a case of mushroom flies.
Mushroom flies are present in Nature wherever fungi are found. Attracted by the odor of decomposing manure and vegetable matter, as well as the smell of growing mycelium, these insect pests zero in and lay their eggs on or near the mycelium and fruitbodys. Under proper conditions these eggs hatch. But it is the larvae that do the extensive damage to the mushroom plant, either by directly feeding on the mycelial cells or tunneling through the mushroom fruitbody.

So do these things exist almost everywhere? I am in the midwest (US) and it is not like there have EVER been mushrooms growing around here (psilocybes anyway) until very recently. Also, they don't look like they have been tunneling into the pins; it's more like they gnawed them from the top down. Thanks for the info.

Maybe there are some cats in the neighbor hood dealing in stolen merchandise, might not be insects at all.

I believe the organic pest control you were thinking of was Diatomaceous Earth. It gets in the joints of bugs and works kinda like sand paper. heh, quite an inhumane way of killing something, but it is indeed organic. -fos-

May not be bugs or slugs at all, most probably it's rodents.

Maybe one of those battery powered ultrasonic pest repellers will work?

I think those only work for mosquitos. The emit (immitate) the sound of dragon fly wings (a mosquitos mortal enemy).

I've been sprinkling both black and red pepper all around the area, but perhaps just not enough... Also, it is okay to apply the pepper directly on top of the bed itself, correct? Thanks for the reply's

The slugs and beatles and ants are going at mine. I think its time to call for an air raid. Ill napalm (salt) them little bastard slugs and the ants can eat pepper for dinner.
