incubate multiple casings
    #832297 -

I am trying to figure out the best way to incubate multiple casings in a small area. I would like to use a large container that has a smaller container inside filled with water and a fish tank heater connected. The larger container is going to have a makeshift shelving setup above the heater to support a few casing containers. The casing containers will not have anything covering them except the larger containers lid. Does the heating container need a lid on it or will having the lid off help or hinder the humidity level? Anybody tried something similar?

sorry, i havent tried that. i am wondering what temps you are at that you need such a setup. IME it seems that many people are trying to get 86F exact which isnt needed. so if you are in this population, dont fret over the incubator being a little cooler than 86F. if not cya.

I guess my biggest concern was the humidity and condesation being a problem if the heater container was open.

Just put some syran wrap over your casing and stick it in the incubator. Dont worry about the humidity for now. Once you casing is birthed, then start to worry about the humidity.

You don't think that the CO2 buildup from the Saran wrap will be a problem with slowing myc growth in the casing?

Use Alum foil....take a fork and put a few holes in the foil.

You will want to add H202 to the water in the incubator.

Also make sure that your incubator is cleaned out every few weeks to prevent contams.

Road - if there turned out not to be a problem with condensation buildup then the need for foil or saran wrap covering the casing containers is eliminated. I will have a external air exchange filtration setup so that might help a little with the moisture buildup I think.

I always just leave my casings in the incubator for a couple of days then remove them when they are ready. I dont put any holes or anything in the syran wrap. As long as there is no light and the temp is right it works fine for me.

I tried the saran wrap idea and my casing got spiderweb. Maybe it was because I didn't pasteurize my coco fibre. Anyways later on my casing succumbed to the greenies and I had to toss it. Now I use two opaque rubbermaids same size one inside the other. The bottom one has a heating pad in it on med heat. Heat in the top one stays right on 83 degrees. Don't rag on me about heating pads. Its not in the same container as my casings and jars remember it is in the bottom one. Pasteurize your casing material. I am gonna have that tatooed on my forehead.
