I Want to Move to Canada, but Need Advice
    #8314401 -

Well, after thinking about it long and hard I think I want to move to Canada.  It might not be for the next year or two, but I want to make it a goal to get there as soon as I am able.

However, I am having difficulties settling on an area to move to.  After a good amount of research, I have limited it down to two major areas that I am interested in.  If you want to see why I chose these areas, it is in my journal here Canada

1.  The Toronto region of Ontario

2.  The Victoria region of British Columbia

And I was hoping that some of the Canada based Shroomerites might share their insights on these areas and tell me a little about them.  Generally, I am interested in the environment of the area (hot/cold, rainy/sunny, forests/mountains/lakes, snowy/clear, etc.), the social and political climate of the area (are the people generally liberal or conservative, drug laws, taxes, etc.), the economic status of the area (are there a good amount of jobs, places to live, cheap/expensive living, etc.), or really anything else you think I should know before I decide to live there.

Thanks, I really appreciate the help guys!

Usually the temperature in Victoria is pretty fair. As long as you have a hoody you wont freeze to death or anything... it's almost never bitterly cold though. It rarely snows. There are many beautiful places on the island for sure. It's pretty laid back... you generally don't have to worry about the cops bugging you.

But living here is pretty expensive just to warn you. A lot of wealthy people do live here... but it really depends on where in Victoria you look.

Maybe each province is different but you cant just up and move into a country. You need to get proper visas, work permits, ect. unless you plan on being a mexican canadian

They will not let you in unless you have an advanced degree.

Or if you have family that you will be staying with. Canada is somewhat picky about who they let in. Its not America :smirk:

Maybe if he knocked up a Canadian chick they'd let him stay to care for her baby?

I doubt that it is impossible to get citizenship into Canada. I probably just have to do what everyone else does, I'll get a work visa and work there are couple years. After I prove I can earn a living and pay my bills I'll get my chance for citizenship. If it doesn't work that way, I am sure there is another way in. I'm going to look at this from an optimistic standpoint, I am going to assume it can be done and do my best to accomplish it.

But first, I want to settle on an area that I can visit on vacation sometime to get an idea of what I'll be looking at.

Thanks for the advice about Victoria, heavy toilet. Its good to know about the expense of the living around there, I am sure there are parts of the island that might be more affordable, but it makes it that much harder to find a place to start again. That coupled with the fact that moving across the country will be difficult makes Victoria a less and less appealing choice.

Just out of curiosity, what are your incentives for moving to Canada? I think it'd be a great place to live in, I'm just curious as to what you find personally attractive.

I dont think anyone said its impossible just not as easy as the United States. I believe its fairly difficult to even get a work visa. I believe you must have some trade or education degree and a prearranged employer. I looked into moving up to Canada several years ago and decided it was more hassle than it was worth.

I have lived in Toronto, and the GTA (greater toronto area) and I'll try to sum up what its like in general terms for you, the straight facts. Toronto is a pretty liberal city as far as I'm concerned. As a white person you'll probably find yourself easily outnumbered by other ethnicities in any public area of the city pretty much. Unless you have money and live/hangout in the more trendy areas. Taxes, probably more than you're used to as an American. Google around online for that info.
Cops pretty much look the other way about marijuana, as long as your a user. Don't know about other ones.
Toronto and the surrounding area is booming, so chances are you'll be able to find work...but you should really check job postings to get an idea depending on your field.

The further you move away from Toronto, generally a reversal happens as far as ethnicity. When I was in highschool there was litereally 2 black people in my school, and 2 asians. That's it. When I moved to Toronto it was pretty "shocking." Weed acceptance, depends on the city. Same deal for jobs etc. I think this is why most immigrants come to the bigger cities: like Toronto.
Also, if you want say, a weekend getaway its practically the boonies just a few hours outside of Toronto. Tons of camping places in the province. In fact you don't even really have to leave the GTA to escape the city, there are lots of cool places to go in between places.

Also, don't let anybody tell you Toronto is a clean city. Its so fucking dirty. London and NYC are tons cleaner in comparison.

Note: Canadian white people threaten to move to Europe.

Note: Europeans are unable to threaten to move anywhere.
