Making a Shpongle mask

I pretty much have a good idea of how I'm going to make the basic frame and shape of the mask, but I don't know what to use to achieve the texture of the original mask. It's rough and gritty, like stone almost, but it was made with some kind of resin that was laid down to the frame I'm pretty sure:



I'm sure there's something I could find at a craft or hardware store I could apply that would dry to a texture similar to the picture above, I'm just not sure what I should go for. Any ideas?

there's some stuff called Fleck-Stone that comes in a spray bottle. it comes in two cans..one for paint i think..and the second is for texture.

On the Twisted site they say the original mask was made with paper mache, so you might want to look into that.
