1st oyster grow
    #8246403 -

This is my first attempt at growing mushrooms after a couple years of studying the shroomery.
Substrate is pasteurized wheat straw with a quart of gypsum, its about 32 inches long. Everything is prepared the way RR suggests, and i do spawn the way that agar does, with Bird Ration wbs. The original culture was a pearl oyster LC from mushymart. I inoculated several jars with it, and tried to make my own LC using agars method, but it didnt work so ive been doing G2G in a still air box. Fruiting chamber is a metal loft with plastic sheeting on it, and 2 vicks cool mist humidifiers. Its pretty well ventilated, but i think it needs some adjustment. This bag was started on 3/16, was colonized 2 weeks later and immediately started pinning when i moved it into the fruiting chamber.

advice would be appreciated. The search function has gotten me this far but now i need to know what i can do to improve the next batch. I have 3 more bags incubating that i started last week. 1 has used coffee grounds in it, which i'll be using from now on to try and get a big 1st flush. My assessment is that i need to increase air exchange. I think the light is okay, the chamber is in the north east corner of the room with windows on each side. The fruiting chamber will fit 8-10 bags in it, 4 feet long, and i plan on filling it and hopefully selling the mushrooms. This grow is a test run to see how much work i'll actually have to do to get enough mushrooms to sell.

Looks very good, particularly for your first time!

The relatively long stems might be a sign of high CO2 levels, other than that, I think you are doing excellent!

Lots of work to get enough mushrooms to make some decent money for your time/effort.

Expect a rather large investment on time/money.

yeah, i'm not expecting much money at all with a grow this small. my goal is to get at least 20 lbs at a time, so if that means innoculating 10 logs at a time, I can handle it. What's more important to me as a horticulture student is gaining experience that the other students don't have.
If i dont make money now, I will play around with other species and get as much experience as possible, so i can put it on my resume.

pasteurized straw yesterday, inoculated today, and moved 3 nearly colonized logs into the chamber. tomorrow i begin soaking seed

They look like you should harvest them immediately, don't let them expand too big, they don't keep well if they are too old and they change the taste to the worse.

harvested 2 lb WHOOOO!
so if i play around with supplements maybe I'll get my target weight and then some!
as far as flavor, i sauteed them, the larger ones had very little flavor, small ones were dank!
