Monotub pins *pics* //updated//

I put together a 50 liter monotub a while back.
Spawn was Rye, Sub about 50/50 coir/hpoo (pasteurized), spawn ratio about 4:1, sub about 4", strain KC multispore, no casing applied!

I've done a few smaller trays from the same grain masters and have found jars made from this print have knotted at the slightest hint of light. I tried to keep this tub in the dark but I guess they saw the light.

Day 1


So I have pins, shed loads of pins!!! Everywhere on the surface you see little white dots they look like those little pins in last picture! Tiny little ones with brown caps  :smile:

Now the sub wasn't really 100% colonized in my mind but it erupted in pins (it must have got some light).
I wasn't planning on not casing it but thats how it's ended up. I think I'm gonna leave it be to do it's thing.

They have moved on a little bit. I can kinda see which ones are gonna be the biggys now. :smile:

I'm really hoping even an eigth of those pins grow up....

The last 50/50 and mgmc casings I did both got trich quite quickly (before first flush!) and I'm still not entirely sure if it was bad pastuerization (bath in zip locs in a styrofoam box) or something else. My subs seem to do OK and they get the same pastuerization technique.

So that's knocked my confidence in my casing material at the mo. I'm gonna have to work through that with some small trays and experimentation I think!

I've read Fahtsters late casing tek and have a couple of trays doing it at the mo, but I've not seen it through yet. I've been trying these with verm only casing to how that goes for me.

This is the biggest tub I've done so far and I'm a bit nervous. :smile:

Temp and FAE are a bit of an issue for me. It's in a drafty attic so both can swing a bit. It's a bit like an outdoor grow in that wind and outdoor temps effect it!

The tub pretty much lives about 4 foot up under a tent made from an an old duvet, with warm air rising up from a light bulb and a tub full of water heated by an aquarium heater underneath. So been pretty much been relying on rising hot air and drafts for general FAE. With the duvet gettign puled pack and the tub (not open) hand fanned once a day.

The max min thermometer indicates the temperate swings from 60F and a little bit colder some nights, to low 70F in the afternoon, not really tropical, but it has been pretty cold here (frosts!).

The forecast for the week ahead has daytime temps in the 50F (which is an improvement) with no overnight frosts. So I might be able to get it up into the 70s in the tent!! :smile:

Just need to keep an eye on them pins to see if the tub gets enough FAE.
