**Dennis McKenna @ The Shroomery!!**
    #819322 -

I have asked Dennis McKenna long time researcher in tryptamines and mushrooms, brother of Terence McKenna, if he would be interested in taking part in a live chat 'in the near future' with Shroomery members. He has agreed

Please leave some feedback.

Good luck

Only i think it should be a password protected chat.....so that no one terrorise the chat at that moment and leave mister McKenna with a bad impression of the shroomery...

But what a good idea!!

It is cool, Dennis has already chatted at the Spriritplants site. He is a good friend of mine. HEre is a pictuee of us at Chapman University with other noted speakers I lectured with.

That is Dennis McKenna on the left, then Leonard Enos, author of A Key to the North American Psilocybin Mushroom, the first ID book published. Then Dr. Jochen Gartz of the University of Leipzig, me and finally on the far right, Ethnobotanist Jonathan Ott.

This is fromthe Gathering of the Minds Conference at Chapman University, 1994.

It wouldn't necessarily have to be password protected, but at least a moderated chat... Obviously it would be a high traffic period for the chat, so people would have to resist using excessive meaningless comments... You could basically voice anyone who isn't normally a troublemaker, and have very strict rules... The second someone starts to get out of line, you could just de-voice them, and not allow them to speak for the rest of the session...

But even those who are prone to outbursts should be allowed to ask any questions they might have, so I propose that there be some place to submit questions before the actual chat session as well, so that if someone has something intriguing to ask, it can still be relayed...

I think we should have it password protected. I like your intentions Zero__Glass, but I would loath to see some idiot offend Dr. McKenna.

Your proposal to submit questions prior to chatting with Dr. McKenna is a fine idea! I support this, and would like to see it implemented. I do have a few questions that I would love to ask him. Anyone have ideas on how to do this? Perhaps we can organize a new forum just for these questions?

The forum participants of the New York Times Drug Policy Forum, a board not too much unlike this one believe it or not but far more politically active, found that such chats worked best when rules were kept to a minimum and all were encouraged to participate. The chats are archived at the nyt site. Feel free to have a look. These are the guests that this unofficial crew of motley reformers on that board presented...

Hi DreaMTrix,

when they held the chat at Spiritplant the questions qere screen in a private chatbox where each person would be send a private chat message that they were next or what question did they want to ask. Then the moderator twlls each person who he will follow. You can give a person two people before him notic3 and then his question will come after the two people before him.

The implementation of that kind of moderation will just stifle conversation and alienate people. I don't think McKenna is some kind of pussy who can't wade through whatever crap may arise himself. If he doesn't want to interact and take his chances with the crowd, and possibly be asked some challenging questions that maybe a particular moderator doesn't see fit to allow, then you might as well just have him post a statement and be done with it.

There is nothing to fear from and open and honest exchange of ideas free from a moderator's prejudice. Especially in this type of media. You can always scroll the trolls for crying out loud. It beats being spoon fed.

Now open your hangar, here comes the airplane.

I t sounds quite interesting, I would welcome the chance to participate.

I see there are ideas being bantered about as to who is invited, or a password protection or moderation. I have been on the NY chat and drug sense chat when they had guests. I hate to be a dissenter but those boards don't have to have much moderation or intervention; they don't have immature persons chatting (ps. NY does require that you register).

I suggest just the simple act of allowing registered users, here at the shroomery, to be able to get the password for that night and insist that they use their shroomery user name; it's not that much to ask. As to a hard format of questions, gosh, we could maybe take turns by using that little list of names on the right of the screen or left, depending on what program you use. All we need is one moderator with a kill button, I don't think Mr. McKenna would be opposed to a more informal setting for questions, but just in case there is a mod.
Now, that should allow informal questions, ensure some semblance of respectful behaviour and maybe we can talk to more guest's that we may not get a chance to ever again.

I was actually cut off on that 2nd talk with Dennis. My computer went down beforwe I had been able to finish the question. I was going to bring up the use of mushrooms in the Sahara 9000 years ago.

Anyway it was a good chat.

Again, thanks for pasting the URL here so our fellow shrooms can decide what kind of qquestions they want to ask Dennis about.

I disagree on the ayahuasca treatment because I think that right now Ibogaine has been proven very successful in the treatment of opiate addiction and cocaine addiction. There is a group of doctors in aAmsterdam who charge 700 dollars U>S> for a Treatment session with ibogaine which the experience last for three days. They have actually documented many cases of cured clients in their research.

DreaMatrix , yes it was IRC.

if i can recall, one had to log in the SpiritPlants first ,then there was a link to the chat.
there was some instructions at the chat screen ,i let the Mod. know in private that i had a Q. and he would tell me how many guys where ahead of me.
when my turn was coming closer (i.e. say 2 askers) the Mod. reminded me , so at this time i had my question already typed, but it was not pre-moderated.
I'm looking forward for this meeting.

MJ, yeah ibogaine seems to be greater for withdraw syndrome.

Preposted questions are a must... or use of a moderator as a middleman ie: you can ask a question to the moderator, and the moderator posts the question for you so nobody sais anything bad or offensive.

It'd be a really neat experience to read an interview with this man with people from the shroomery asking the questions. It'd be better to participate and be able to ask a question myself. It'd be the best if sometime in the future he returned for a second interview... and we wouldnt want to ruin our chances of that with someone posting an inappropriate post.

Speaking of inappropriate questions.

I was attending the 2nd International Conference on Hallucinogenic Mushrooms back in 1977 when I saw two dudes with ereal long hair approac Dr. Albert Hofmann and say, "Hey, Your the LSD dude. Can we cop a few hits from you man?"

Hofmann was embarresed and said to a colleague. "Its people like those two kids who screw it up for the rest of the world."

That is what I call an inappropriate comment.

Thanks Mr. Freedom, you know what I'm talking about. Drugsense.org is a leader in the war. The war for our very salvation.

Some of you people are simply fucked up. It has to be open posting or it isn't real. You have nothing to fear. Let it happen. You will be glad you did. Read the fucking forum events with our "drug war" celebrities at the NYT DP forum if you don't believe me. Yeah, you might need a moderator to remove the asshole who just wants to post, "hey your momma likes me to slap her nose on my balls" type posts. But other than that, let it happen, baby.

IT CAN HAPPEN HERE, TOO! The truth can be told.

It is time to wage a war against the war!!! END THE GENOCIDE NOW! The drug war is an attack on our people. We cannot let it continue.

Leaf, while I agree an open forum would be nice, I don't think you understand the nature of the vast majority of users of the chat on this board.
They are malcontent children that only wish to type line after line of drivel and to intterupt ANY intelligent conversation being engaged in; if only for their own amusments.
The admin, continualy, tolerates underage children, who post thier ages on this very board, to continue in opposition to the very rules designed to protect the shroomery from prosecution.

I doubt that anyone could seriously get Dennis to engage in that type of atmosphere. I for one would not put him through it.

I'm sorry leafblowerz, but I strongly disagree with what you said. If you give some people the opportunity, they may fuck up the whole chat.

Anyway, have you ever been to an academic meeting or colloquium before? These events are always most effective when organized and moderated. And it pays to be prepared. I mean c?mon, there are going to be some very important topics covered during the chat.....and Dr. McKenna should be appreciated for setting the time aside.

Yeah but the big difference here is that you can scroll right on past their post whereas in the environment in which you refer one may have great difficulty in ignoring the "heckler or other idiot".

Maybe I have more faith in the average participant at this site than some of you but I truly believe that an opportunity for all to interact with such individuals as McKenna is a positive thing.

I do know that these types of forums are great for enabling honest and open exchanges of ideas and that they are severely under used for that purpose.

I would hope that any guests would be understanding of the pitfalls of such a media but agree that the rewards are far greater.

Either way, the fact that the shroomery is interested in engaging in such events is a very encouraging.

Okay, you have a good point here.

> Maybe I have more faith in the average participant at this site than some of you..

Well I haven't been on the Shroomery for too long (about 1 month) so I don't know what to expect from others.

>but I truly believe that an opportunity for all to interact with such individuals as McKenna is a positive thing.

Very positive! Indeed a rare opportunity.

>I do know that these types of forums are great for enabling honest and open exchanges of ideas and that they are severely under used for that purpose.

That's a shame. One can really get some across some good questions if given the opportunity like this.

>I would hope that any guests would be understanding of the pitfalls of such a media but agree that the rewards are far greater.

I'm still not so sure about the rewards outweighing the pitfalls; seems like to me the pitfalls are heavier and it may be worth the sacrifice to have it set up with logins and moderation.

> Either way, the fact that the shroomery is interested in engaging in such events is a very encouraging.

Yes, absofuckinglutely yes!! I hope we can do more of this in the future. I'm working on my wish list for people I would like to see on Shroomery.
