Oyster help...
    #817875 -

Hey all

Been trying to grow some Oyster mushies for a while now from a culture block from a friend of mine. Ive had some troubles actually getting the culture to colonize rye jars without contams, and have only come away with a clean jar once or twice. THe biggest problem so far has been my inability to get these suckers to fruit. I tired exposing them to a variety of conditions straight from a rye cake or a casing format, but i always end up getting clusters of tiny tiny fruits barely larger than a pin. What gives? SHould i try altering the growing conditions or maybe try adding different nutrients? help!

Oysters are suceptable to CO2. So you should have plenty of air exchange, but also humidity.

Hey Anno and Aural- thanks for the quick replies!

The first time i tried to fruit them they were cased and put in the same growing conditions considered optimal for P. Cubensis (also cased). I would have thought there was enough air exchange as they got plenty of attention and regular fannings. Hmm... This kindof stumps me cause ive heard theyre pretty rugged and fruit under a wide range of environmental conditions. Deflates the cultivation ego y'know?

They don?t need a casing.
And, again, they are very CO2 intolerant, the exact opposite of P. cubensis.

Take the colonized rye....mix it with pasteurized straw....stuff the whole lot into a clean plastic bag....poke holes in the bag.....hang bag in the dark for a fews days.....then move to the light. Et voila....you now have fruiting oysters.

You can try cold shocking them between the move to the light if you like.

As pointed out, you need good air exchange with oysters. And, also as pointed out, you don't need to case them....infact, you shouldn't! Commercial oyster production is often done in open-topped jars or plastic bags.

It may look like a button mushroom right now, but wait until you see how it grows!

Sounds to me like a weak strain. I've never had probs with oysters. I bought a couple bags of inoculated dowels and been growing spawn on birdseed in jars with no contam at all. The only other thing I can think of is your enviroment is very dirty.
