Casablanca
    #8165982 -

Mmm. I watched Casablanca last night for the fifth or sixth time. Truly just one of the greatest films of all time. Just wonderful. And how about that Peter Lorre?! He's in the film for all of ten minutes and ROCKS it.

I always think the same thing, it's about an hour and forty minutes though. It's a testament, really, to how much more mileage filmmakers used to be able to get out of every moment. Now people feel like they can't make an epic film without taking up 3 and a half hours of your time.

Have you ever seen Adaptation? You know the screenwriting class he goes to at the end of the movie? I've been to that actual class, taught by Robert McKee. Amazing experience, that seminar, and on the last day he spent six hours breaking down Casablanca scene by scene...ever since then I've been wildly impressed by it.

i saw this thread from the main forum page, and the first thing that popped into my mind was that i bet robot posted this thread.

i remember it being a good movie, but i dont remember it so much. watched it back in high school when i was thinking i was going to be a film major and wanted to see all those classics.

oddly enough, i haven't seen adaptation. i meant to, but forgot about it. i'll remember to dload it when i get home now.

and i'm sure i'll give casablanca several more chances. i realize it's not so highly revered for nothing. i bet that class was a pretty interesting experience. i'd be interested in hearing such a detailed breakdown of the scenes.

A lot of the dialogue in the film is brilliant in that it's all surface and there's so much subtext underneath. When you watch it again, pay attention to the scene where Ilsa shopping in the marketplace for a silk wrap and Rick talks to her there. They're saying so much more than their words hint at.

The problem I have with Casablanca is that it's been parodied so many times that it's effect has become somewhat diminished - especially the last scene.

I actually think I now enjoy the scene at the end of "Play It Again Sam" where Woody Allen quotes Bogie's speech wholesale, more than I do the original.

Mediated through homage the lines sound less corny than they do in the Michael Crichton original.

Dude OMR I'm happy to hear you say that because I am a classic movie fiend and Casablanca is without a doubt my top movie of all time. It's just so snappy and cool and Bogart is at his best bad ass don't give a damn self in this movie.

I approve of this thread

Dude let me recommend a little known film that's a classic amongst film people because it's probably the most stylish and creepy movie of all time... and it just happens to be on Turner Classic Movies right now. Night of the Hunter with Robert Mitchum. This movie is just cool.
