yeah, i see. it looks very interesting. i mean, keeping silent and weary cause of an avalanche seems like quite a ludicrous situation.

yeah i know, the Elephant Man was really Brooks' work. i didn't know that before! i know he's great but his films are all such schlock... probably better then Spielberg shlock though!

It is, the opening narration about the avalanche situation is hilarious.

Indeed, Mel Brooks produced the movie. He saw Eraserhead and decided to hire Lynch to direct it. I've seen most of his movies, and they are all funny. The Producers is probably my favorite.

Winter's Bone: Review

sorry it took so long, but i had to download this again (because i had it in shitty quality before and then Netflix took their version down so...) and then i had to find the right time to get into it but... here is the mini-review; mind yer spoilers now.

short form: Missouri can burn in a forest fire but it's too wet and shitty to. and the stockhouses, especially.

the movie is about this girl who treks through the forest and poor rural township, looking for her father among the destitute and barren community out in the boonies, where freedom is seldom infringed, and criminal elements can thrive. methamphetamines is the big deal here. her father is a cook, so he abandons his family for his fix, and because of this, gets lost in the dredges of the dealers and users in this community, and eventually ends up getting arrested. he posts bond by giving up his family home where his daughter takes care of his two other little kids and his mentally mute wife. the daughter (played by Jennifer Lawrence, who is excellent in this) instead of letting it and the house go, she takes action to try and get him back home and finds out he's dead along the way, not to mention, the lonely landscape. it's so lonely, the young boy (Ree's brother) rides a skateboard on dirt, and obviously doesn't get very far; that and the school holds army marching classes, because Missouri.

in the day to day, she keeps care of them all at home, teaching the kids how to survive by telling them what for and how to cook and shoot. she looks into her father's whereabouts by talking to her relatives, all of whom are skeevy drug-fucks whom keep to silence about running 'em because that kind loyalty is all they know. first she seeks Teardrop (John Hawkes is really good too) her father's (Jessup) brother, and gets sent on her way, because he doesn't want to snitch, as trouble comes one's way if one does that. so no luck there, and whereabouts elsewhere, where she gets herself into some fucked up shit with this "Grandpa 'thunk' Wilson", and his wife.

they eventually come back to her home and tell her to come with them to her daddy's body, out on the lake, and she gets prove of his death, in order to prove to the police that he's dead and that the bond is no good. she, at the end, receives the cash portion of the bond from the bondsman, which of whom gave it was anonymous. it seems like, to me, it was Jessup's brother Teardrop. at the end he says "i know who did it" (killed his brother for snitching) and it seems to me it is the corrupt sheriff in town, whom was gonna kill him at one point as he was driving with Ree, but didn't because she was in the car with Teardrop. but i'm sure of it now, that he was the anonymous person... Tear didn't want to get involved as Ree started looking for her father, because he KNEW that he was out but that his cash wasn't enough, and the house was put up for the bond, but then he felt guilty and tried to help get her out of the predicament, and just (off-film, after the movie) clean up the corrupt cop (i think) and the rest of the mess he essentially caused by bailing out his clearly in trouble brother, which started the sequence of events of him snitching (because he didn't want to go away again and deal with a "last high", as is said) and getting himself killed for his habit. subtle. but whoa, makes it even more fucked.

the shooting is excellent, with tracking shots the whole way through (this is an independent film by Winter's Bone Productions) and a deft handling of the following of the characters, and the pictures are beautiful, though of course cold, wild, and towards the end of the film, dark.

she dreams at one point about squirrels and a methlab fire in B/W 8mm. which i thought was excellent.

this film is near hopeless. and it's depressing. and it's dark. fuck Missouri.

but it was fucking brilliant.
