    #3542147 - 12/25/04 03:09 PM (12 years, 11 months ago)

i don't think i can recall ever hearing anybody, in general, argue otherwise.

can you think of a movie which was better than the book upon which it was based?

advantage with movies is speed. i am a uber slow reader and just dont have the time to read the books anymore. for that reason, and that alone, i lik movies more.

books are more stimulatiuong and in depth and other than time are way better.

The thing is, most movies people say that about are movies where the book is already well known, and in that case the book is likely to be better than the movie cause of, well, common sense...good books are often successful, and so making a movie is just a way of making more mney. But more movies not advertised as based-on-the-book than most people realize are actually made from stories from books that are optioned by the studio...then they call a screenwriter in to salvage the good story, throw away the shitty writing, and then make something film-able out of it.

Likely this is part in due to the fact that as you read a book, you are making a little movie along in your head. What the characterse look like, what the scenes look like, what happens, etc. is all going on in your mind.

If the movie does not fit what you had imagined, you are going to be like SHIAT MAN THIS AIN'T THA REAL THANG!

I see your point but even when I see the movie before reading the book, the book is still better.

Books are better because they are not meant to be completed in 1-2 hours. No matter how visually appealing a movie may be, a book can go into infinitely more detail without being constrained by budgets or reality, the only limitation is your ability to use your imagination. I love reading, and I love watching good movies as well, but I think if I really want to entertain myself I will either read or write something.

I know it's highly debatable, but I think "the Exorcist" was a better movie than book. The book was very good, but the movie was freakin' awesome. Without the movie, the book would probably be relatively unknown these days.

I can honestly say I seen a better movie than the book was.

The only ones that were close that I can think of off the top of my head was:
Fight Club
Jurassic Park
One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest

I cant even think of one....
sadly, even the Cat In The Hat (starring Mike Myers) was better as a book....

and a 15 pg. one at that!

really? i mean, the movie was awesome - that much is true. but the book was soooooo much better i think. the scenes with "Chief" were so much more in-depth in the book. just for those scenes, i'd say the book kicked the movies ass.

I liked the movie "The Green Mile" better than the book. which is surprising because most of the other movies I've seen based on Stephen King novels, have been fucking awful. Case in point the movie "it". "It" is my favorite book ever, but holy shit that movie was bad. Another movie that contests the book, IMO, is Sleepers.

I disagree. The Fight Club book was much better then the movie. The movie focused on the fact that Tyler Durden and the main character are the same person, while the book focused on the revolution taking place; the whole double person thing was just a side story. The movie kicked ass, but the book was much better than the movie.

Hi

I found both the books of Fight Club and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas not as good as the movies (although both still excellent!)

High Fidelity is one where the book is better, and all of Tom Clancy's books turned into movies, particularly The Sum of All Fears....they really need to make a Red Storm Rising movie

Sorry, I didn't mean it the way I said.

The book was much better, but the movie was up to my standards.
