 "Spun" Movie about Meth w/ John Leguizamo...

Anyways I saw this movie yesturday, it was pretty trippy, but in the movie the character played by leguizamo talks about why he hates hippies, and he tells this story of a hippy kid who gets hit by a bus, and how some hippy chick comes out, and sprinkles some kind of crystal and then they go off on how he is just laying there, and the lady only sprinkled crystal and didnt try to help him, and then they go off on an aside, on how the crystal is the shit, I'm pretty sure its acid they are talking about, but not to sure, I was on shrooms, anyone else see it?

Noone was on acid, it was all crystal meth. And Leguizamo's character was telling a story about how a hippy chick was trying to heal her friend with a crystal, as in crystal magic or whatever they call it. A lot of the sequences shouted "Requiem for a Dream" out loud. Good movie to watch. Especially with Mickey Rourke as "the Cook".

is this the same movie with mickey rourke? and jason shwartzman? and directed by the guy that did the music video for smack my bitch up and ray of light?
Saw a special about it on Bravo, looked cool. I'll go buy the DVD if it comes out.

came out on dvd not too long ago, very entertaining movie on the tweaker culture
better than the Salton sea imo
check it out, its the Fear and Loathing of tweaker movies!

I would have to disagree. I got a better sense of the tweaker culture with Salton Sea. I found that Spun dwelled on very repetitive motifs or sequences when the rush would hit them. No variation. It just seemed a little too garish for me.
The scene in Salton Sea when they go to that guys house to pick up speed and the guys girlfriend is under the matress, the dealer is tweaking and jabbering, and covering them with a fucking speargun. A SPEARGUN!! Then when they walk out the speargun comes through the door. Absolutely classic.
Also, Salton Sea had some absolutely unforgettable characters. The guy with no nose was a fuckin trip. I have known psychos like that.
Yes, Spun relayed the hopelessness and endless cycle of speed well, but it just lacked punch. I wish I'd just watched Salton Sea twice instead of wasting two hours on Spun. I found myself fast forwarding through it waiting for something interesting to happen. Finally, "The Cook" blows himself up at the end. It sucks to wade through an entire movie just to get one laugh.
It also didn't help that I rented Spun at Blockbuster. They edited out all the naughty parts and for some reason they bleeped out the word cunt. Weird.

Salton sea and Spun are 2 diff types of movies. Sure salton sea involvs speed but its not a 'speed movie' per say, as much as it is a doing whatever it takes to avenge his wifes death, and just so happened speed was part of the story. both good movies, i liked salton sea better myself.

It was a good movie, that could have been a great movie had the director not taken so many liberties with the script and the dialog. A lot of the over-the-top stuff, that blew the suspension of disbelieve, was the director trying to be cute. It also got "Hollywooded up" a bit. The marketing of the film got sort of botched up too...
That being said, it was a good film. The casting/acting was really good. The cinematography was very, very good (especially the film and how it was developed). The sound editing was also incredibly well done -- they really managed to capture that "snap, crackle, pop, and fizzle" of shooting up a big load of meth or coke.
I can't believe Blockbuster is renting an edited version -- that would destroy the experience of the movie... 
An interesting side note: The film was written about the "meth scene" in Eugene, Oregon, in the mid-90's. Even though in the film it is about the Valley and LA -- it's really about Eugene and Portland. If you check out Schwartzman's Volvo that he's driving around in, it has Oregon license plates...
EDIT: PS: The "hippie crystal" story was true. Most of what happened, and the dialog, in that movie was based on real events, but the director really screwed a lot of that stuff up, so much of it is now divorced from reality a bit. Especially the tied up on the bed thing, and the cops doing meth and shit -- way too over the top...

I thought it was a great movie. They really caught the essence of the tweaker well. The Salton Sea was great too, but like someone said its not really a tweaker movie as much as Spun. I ended up stayin up for 3 days after I saw it. The story he was telling is just the kind of thing speed freaks talk about. Weird crazy stories and half cocked schemes.

Salton Sea and Spun sucked. Maybe filmmakers should have a little experience with the drugs they do beforehand.

i have to agree the films werent that good, spun was entertaining, probaly only cuz i was wacked on mushrooms...
it made me fiend for dope for days...
meth sucks i hate it, i love it, i hate it, bah....
salton sea totally ate dog turds, it was amusing the 1st time through, but it got annoying fast, cheesy ass love story, god i have hollywood.
requim for a dream blows them both away..
go see that,
8 1/2 weeks is also awesome...

Spun was ok... i heard somewhere that the movie had more frames than any other movie because of all the fast-forward scenes.

I watched Spun a few weeks ago and thought it was good. I just rented Requiem for a dream.
