Need help finding a book (actually, a series)

I remember reading a series of books in middle school, and I don't rememmber the titles or the author's name.

They were fantasy/horror novels, and the main character in all of the books was a young boy. He was always accompanied by an elderly fellow, and they went around finding these old artifacts, and were always being hassled by ghosts and the like. It was a very dark and creepy series.

The series was rather old (30 years or more) and I believe the author is dead (and maybe British, but I'm not sure).

I know I'm not giving you much, but I'm just hoping that maybe someone out there knows what I'm talking about.

Btw, I figured it out.

The author is John Bellairs. Anyone with kids with good reading comprehension should check the books out. They're very good. I think I may buy a couple, just for old-time's sake.

It isn't the lion the witch and the wardrobe is it? That was by C.S. Lewis and the series was the chronicles of narnia.
