PVC Greenhouse, but more.
    #8155835 -

I'm thinking of building a PVC greenhouse like over on http://www.pvcplans.com/pvc-pipe.htm

It seems great considerig you can make it to conform to almost any size you need.

My question are about the strength, what type of load can this pipe handle? I know 3" or w/e pipe is pretty sturdy, but would like someone with exp. to chime in.

Another question I have, and I'll try to explain this as best as possible and as short..

Can it be possible to rig up the humidifier so the actual frame of the pvc, or at least the top part will be the actual pipeline delivering the humidity?

Like, running a hose into the top corner of the pvc, then along the pipe every 8" or so have a hole so the humidity pours out, or are most hum's too weak to deliver enough pressure to feed it though the pvc?

I would "stop off" or block some of the pvc with a filler or something to only have a specific part of the frame being a "piepline" if it was possible.

Thats about the only questions Ihave at the moment, basicaly
A, how much weight can the thinnest diameter pipe hold?
B, would a hum be strong enough to deliver humidity though 6-10ft of pvc pipe

I like the idea of this but if its feasible is beyond me.

This is a simple drawing showing my thoughts of how it wuld work... please excuse the kindergarten drawing, I'm no picasso.

I also have several sheet of 4x6' plexiglass. I might use plexiglass on the top to use as the platform the humidifier will rest on, I don't know, but I'll be thinking about it.

the red lines are where humidity will be restricted passage and the blue is where it will flow. the dot in the pipe are holes for it to be released.

Looks like a good idea but I do not have an answer for you.
I am interested in the final verdict tho.

You would probably be safe using 1/2" pipe. 3/4" would be solid though. I dunno though, for the price of all that pipe, you could buy a martha.

As far as the humidity idea, it "could" work, but 3/4" pipe and elbows would create some pressure, and outlets closer to the source would lower pressure down the line. I'm not saying it isn't possible, in fact, I like PVC...

Rehydrating casings is simply a matter of cranking up the ultrasonic for 2-3 days.

I know alot of contractors that would let me get pieces, anything else I'll shell out.

The pipe would have to be thick enough for support, but not too thick as to allow for loss of pressure.

I'll probably use cut off valves along the frame for wherever i want to shut off the flow.

I build everything like a brick shithouse, so I made my mini greenhouse out of 1 1/4" PVC.

I wouldn't try to use the structure to deliver moisture. Condensation will form on the output holes and drip straight down. Just let your humidifier blow directly in the greenhouse.

oool, I was hoping YOU would say something here, but I didn't expect it until morning. I want to make the GH highly portable, sturdy and quite compact as far as exterior devices being all cluttered about. most GH's i see has all this nasty tubing coming out of it like some sort of 1940's ufo sighting.

thanks for the advice.

however, one question seems to float in my mind..

what if the pvc was lined inside with tubing, the fixtures of some type at the exits of humidity were somehow made to help prevent dripping, would it still be a bad idea?

also, RR, do you have pics?

If the pipe or tube is exhausting at an upward angle (see pic), condensation will stay in the system, though doing this with the frame probably isn't going to work.

yeah..that was a quick dradt, the pic.

I have a ton of plexiglass. I might use it for the top of the gh so the humidifier can sit on it and not have to force air upwards through pipes.

I wont bother doing the pvc pipe distribution thing, i'll just lay the hum on top and use a small hose to affix inside the plexiglass. If thats correct to do?

Well, you want the humidifier low. This allows condensation to roll back into the humidifier. If it's high, condensation will roll into the chamber. If you have a low point in the air pathway, water will collect there and eventually block off air flow.

Oh I see. So no matter what I gotta have long tubing reachin to the top? I see.

That kinda blows out my whole reasoning for wanting to make one so the actuall GH is the only footprint.

So this would be a no-go.

I could possibly make a pvc stand off shelf coming off the frame, but still, takes up extra space.. bah

I know I want enough for 4-6 trays that are 24x14.5x6, kinda like low profile underbed storage bins.

I totally understand what youre saying about the condensation now... its like the condensation falls back towards the source as its created, right?

Well, buy a martha, stick a Vics in the bottom and pipe the exhaust up to the top.

Other than auto re-hydration (which is really nice), my setup is no better than a martha. You've got the mad scientist bug too though eh?

Yea, you got it. Condensation happens. It either rolls back into the humidifyer, or into the FC.

Can a vicks be INSIDE the gh? even at 100% hum?

Thanks for sticking around to answer my questions, I wanna know the do's and don'ts before I go off building a gh out of legos and shit.

No. But it can be inside at 95% humidity. Once you hit 100, condensation will form on the underside of your trays and shelves, and drip down onto the trays below. You just have to keep an eye on it, and adjust the amount of time you run it. A cheap 15 minute interval timer would allow you to get high RH without overkill.
