Is a wooden greenhouse a bad idea?
    #16653394 -

I am looking to build a greenhouse behind my house and my wife says that it must look nice.  She hates the look of PVC greenhouses so I guess I am stuck with wood or aluminum.  I am not sure where to buy aluminum or how to use it to build a custom greenhouse so I feel as though I am stuck with using wood for the frame.

My plan is to build a wood frame out of pressure treated wood and then cover it with clear corrugated polycarbonate sheets.

I have a few questions about using wood for the frame:

1. I am planning to use pressure treated wood (lowes doesn't mention what kind of wood it is).  Would it be better to go with cedar or redwood even if it isn't treated?

2. After building the frame, should I paint it with something to give it further protection against the wet conditions or is it best to let it go? And if painting is the way to go, what should I use? I am thinking some sort of oil based deck paint, or marine paint.

3. If wood is not a good choice for this build, what material would you recommend and where can I get it?

Thanks!

PVC greenhouses look just fine if the builder isn't sloppy.

I do not weld, but I know someone who could teach me.  If so, where would I get stuff that I would be welding together?  I looked around for lowes for a while and didn't see any wood shaped material that was aluminum so I'm not sure where I would buy such a thing.

As far as the painted pvc goes... that's not a bad idea, I guess that'll be my backup plan if all else fails.

Wood covered in clear corrugated plastic isn't going to look any better than a PVC greenhouse IMO. I think the half cylinder PVC setups look kinda neat.

Wood is often used in greenhouse design... though if you're asking in this forum that might change the requirements.

I would guess that treated wood covered in all weather paint or a deck sealant would last 4-5 years minimum, possibly longer.

It's also possible to build one from aluminum without welding. Bolts at the joints and a solid design could make for a sturdy frame. PVC is going to be the cheapest route and barring some real metal work and heavier grade metal (expensive), none of them are going to look much better or worse than the others.

Perhaps painting the PVC green before applying the plastic would be a visual improvement?

I bet you could make a treated wooden frame and just attach the plastic to the inside instead of the outside. That way the wood wouldn't be exposed to 85%+ RH. Just make sure to use a water sealer on the wood.

With aluminum, you wouldn't even have to weld it. Just get the right size pieces and connectors. They make all different kinds.

If all else fails, maybe try using an EZ-Up brand pop-up canopy with 4 canvas walls, lined on the inside with plastic. You could even paint murals on the outside of the walls, they're usually white.

Something like this.

Probably any brand would work, but I have seen some very low-quality pop-up canopies, and the EZ-Up brand is always very sturdy. Wouldn't wanna expose everything just because of a storm.

Edit - another idea, you could get one of those cheap  plastic sheds and line the inside with plastic.

Pressure treated cedar would work for a couple years.
And it would be classy. Seal it up nice with polyurethane and it might last a long time indeed.

Just look around in the hardware store. Not saying that this is gonna be cheap, but it'd work.

Personally, I'd convince your wife to just let you build a damn greenhouse out of PVC. Tell her the beauty is on the inside, not the outside. Then slap her and demand a blowjob and a sandwich, at the same time. It'll work.
