A little idea....

Okay, I got my syringes today, so ran out and grabbed my verm, jars, and brown rice. (Ill get the container, and perlit when I need it) So, I was just thinkign of anything last minute, before I went on and did anything, and I was thinking of the holes Ive gotta poke in my jars. I obviously wouldnt wanna leave them open, cuz then shit could fall in, but Ive heard air exchange is good for your cakes as well, so obviously tapping the holes would block any air exchange.

I searched some bakc posts for info on using coffee filters, and it had proven that theyre not good at all really, HOWEVER, would using coffee filters, in conjunction with the loid with its standard holes in it be an okay idea? Like poke the four hols in the lid, then put 2 layers of coffee filter [cut into circles] over the lid, screw on the cap, and then sterilize. Then to inoculate, just pok holes through the coffee filter, and through the hoes io the jar.

The idea is the lid obviously blocks like 99% of the opening of the jar for allowing anything from comming in, however, that extra 1% (the four holes) will be left open for air exchange, but guarded by weak filter system, that ill block all the larger particles, and a lot of small ones. However theres still a chance of something fallng through, something very small and dangerous.

So what do you think? Good idea? Bad idea? Every tried it? Ever think of it? Im just curious cu I dont wanna fuck up my first batch ever! Also, what would you suggest [or if youve done this what did you do] to indicate where the holes are on the lid? You can always put dots on the filter, then place it exatly over the holes on the lid, but then when you screw on the second part of the lid, it will shift the filters! My thinking was to put on the dots, and use an ordinary pin to poke a hole in one of the dots, then push the pin through one of the holes in the lid [obviously if you poke a hole in the dot on the top, stick the pin in the hole on the top of the jar] then screw the other piece on with the pin still in, so this keeps the filter from shifting out of place. Got a better idea?

The vermiculite layer is there to accomplish just this.

I don?t think it will hurt anything, but I don?t belive it will contribute to anything.

So, its pretty much a neutral idea, that wont have any efect really either way? None the less, I think Ill do it as I have a heap of coffe filters, and a mind riddled with paranioa! [hehe!]

In any case, as long as it wont hurt anything, and could contribute in some insane case! [even if its only like a .00000001% chance theres a small particle that would have gone through the verm, if it was not slowed down by the filter!]
