I'm having a hard time listening to all my old music.

Before I got into the Dead, Afrobeats, Folk Jazz, Ethiopian Jazz, Khmer psychedelia, Ethinc folk, and so on I listened to a lot of cheesy 80's music and Italo Disco.

It was cheesy, of course, but fun. I could easily imagine music videos going on in my head, and enjoy the beats and goofy lyrics. But now I find myself constantly skipping all of it on my iPod and telling myself that I'll listen to it "later". This has been going on for like two months. The problem is, they make up a huge bulk of my playlist and I'm basically at a loss.

Maybe I just need some time off? I really hope that my interest didn't completely die because I can only find so much of the other music I like. Phish just isn't as good as the dead, IMO. WSP and String Cheese aren't very interesting. Khmer Psy. is really rare. Afrobeats only have a select few talented artists and so on. It's hard, man! Really hard.

I suffer from a similar problem to some extent. Good music is extremely hard to come by and once you experience it, you simply cannot turn back. I solve this problem by obsessively downloading tons of albums and sifting through a ton of crap every day to find some good tunes.

Granted, I do enjoy 80s music from time to time at an indie club or something like that, but in reality, 80s music is some of the least aesthetically meaningful music period. Not really a wonder you are evolving in your musical tastes. Just embrace it and talk to other people about what kinds of music they like... evolve and learn. Music is life!

There is a lot of bad 80's music, but the bands I was listening to were widely accepted as great.

Depeche Mode
New Order
Altered Images
The Cure
The Human League
Yaz
Joy Division

Those were some of my favorite bands that I've been passing up a lot lately. I've always been a beat over lyrics person so I don't understand how I'm evolving. Am I learning to appreciate more complex beats or something? I don't know. It's so difficult for me to understand.

Especially since soulseek makes my internet crash a lot for some reason. I do the same filtering stuff, but end up tossing 99% of what I download out. And that can only be done when I can let soulseek run without interference. Even harder, is actually finding someone who has the music I want to download. Then there is trying to get them to stay on which most people don't.

I kind of get what your saying! I'm starting to listen to dynaimc music more and more. I still LOVE the verse-chorus-verse-bridge-chorus methodology of music, however if a song follows that pattern, it has to be pretty interesting (scale choices, progressions, sound and timbre choices, ect; anyone can put on distortion and bang three chords)

I'm starting to get into Jazz (just a little bit, and I'm really picky about it :toungue:) so what Folk Jazz and Ethiopian Jazz ould you reccomend? The genres themselves sound interesting.

It is a strange, liberating feeling leaving the music you love/used to listen to. I went from Rammstein, to Bagpiping, to Classic Rock, to Spanish Guitar, to a dive into jazz. Who knows where you'll end up next! Good Post!

For Ethiopian Jazz, I recommend the Ethiopiques series. It's a series of CDs spanning the last 30/40 years with many great artists on it who happen to be impossible to spell. There's Mahmoud Ahmed, Tebereh Tesfa, Alemayehu Eshete, and more that I'm trying to find. But I have all those Soulseek problems.

Folk Jazz might very well be my favorite. Nina Simone is excellent. Ethnic music in general fits this category (I think). There are a lot of beautiful songs ranging from Africa, to Sardinia, Poland, and places all over the world. Maybe Folk Jazz is the wrong way to describe it? What I mean is kind of old world ethnic music. Nico is another one. She has a really gothic folkish medieval feel. The problem with this genre is that there are lots of songs that don't end up recorded because it's the creation of a culture and not a band.

Of course Nico and Nina Simone have their own songs too (apart from folk), so they aren't the best examples. Adama Drame is a better example, as he sticks with Djembe sounds of Africa. Ethnic compilation CDs often work but you really have to sift through them.

In my experience, the only band that you can listen to forever without needing a cooling-off period is the Grateful Dead. And the only reason they're an exception is that, if you get bored with them, just jump forward or backward 5-15 years, and presto! Brand new sound. Lately I've been feasting on the early 80s Sailor/Saints.
