Who listens to Trance Music?
    #491329 - 12/14/01 06:24 PM (21 years, 9 months ago)

I do. It is one of my passion, keeps me together. There several genres of Trance:

Hard
Progressive (+ Hard)
Goa
Uplifting/Epic (euphoric trance)
Dream

I understand through my experiences that this music has a latent quality: it's potential to be transcendendtal as a catalyst. The scene itself is massive in Europe and peaked worldwide in popularity in 98-00.

This is only music that ever touched me deeply, reverberating to the fibre of my being. It is only one of the few that can make me cry. The music is meant to be fel by the heartt, never spoken by words like Tao.

Here are some examplary classics [euphoric trance]:

System F vs Armin Van Buuren - Exhale (Massive Reconstructive Remix)

Delerium - Silence (Dj Tiesto Remix)

Chicane - Halycon (Airscape Remix)

Lustral - Everytime (Mike Koglin / B Katcha Remix)

Gouryella - Tenshi (ATB remix)

**Current Massive UK tune 2001**
Vaiio - Rapture ( Avb / Soulside / Riva / John Creamer / Deep Dish Remixes)

Expand the cranium, listen to Trance!

Well said, I couldnt have put it better myself.
On a more personal note, trance makes the numb part of my brain feel mushy, ha.
Jesus I sound retarded, but its true.

Excellent songs, we must have similar taste....

Heres a few of my favorites right now:

Delerium - Terra Firma (Lara's mix)
Svenson & Gielen - Twisted
CJ Stone - Into the Sea

I like Trance music sometimes. It's good background music when your doing other things.

Actually I prefer to play/record Trance music rather than listien to someone else's recording. All it really takes for Trance is a GOOD BUZZ and GOOD EQUIPTMENT!

Trance is awesome, it definately takes you places traditional music could never take you. I've never seen a trance video though...what do they look like?

You forgot psychedelic trance!

Midi Miliz, Talamasca, Atmos, Spirallianz, S.U.N. Project,  and Hallucinogen of course (also known as shpongle), just to name a few. I like wuite a lot of the german stuff, and israeli, and scandinavian, and, and and...

I'm not too keen on commercial trance though, or whatever it is called. The kind that's so popular and is on the radio & MTV and gets on any of the top 10 - top 200 lists... It's too cute & bubblegummy.

Thor: You don't per chance have any Astral Projection videos? Or perhaps Juno Reactor? I'm looking for the video for "God is God", impossible to find...

Thor just told me that his dick is absolutely rock hard over this thread....he can't even walk properly! And Thor, did you tell our trance friends here that we're off to see DJ Tiesto spin live tomorrow?

I'm so egg-cited that I think we should have to start our day with some E mixed in with the Lucky Charms tomorrow morning! We'll be making good time if we're rolling by the time Scooby Doo starts.

Hallucinogen is Simon Posford and has more of a beat and Shpongle is Simon Posford and Raja Ram and is more ambient.

I'm sort of a closet trance listener. I don't own any CDs, but I always listen to Trance on winamp radio.

My favorite station is encoded at 160k, which is better than many MP3s, but you'll need a fast connection to enjoy it.

Download Winamp, and point it at http://205.188.234.33:8016

In reply to:

Excellent songs, we must have similar taste....

Heres a few of my favorites right now:

Delerium - Terra Firma (Lara's mix)
Svenson & Gielen - Twisted
CJ Stone - Into the Sea

We do, we are members of TranceAddict.com. I'm u4ea:[soulstar]..

So I have more downloading to do. :)

Oh yeah, the Cj stone with Green Court Rmx is also a gem with some nice breakbeats and an anthemic style.

And videos (HOLY CRABS!), I will keep that mind. I just don't have the room and I am very selective about what I keep. Thanks..

Timeleech:
In reply to:

You forgot psychedelic trance!

Midi Miliz, Talamasca, Atmos, Spirallianz, S.U.N. Project, and Hallucinogen of course (also known as shpongle), just to name a few. I like wuite a lot of the german stuff, and israeli, and scandinavian, and, and and...

I'm not too keen on commercial trance though, or whatever it is called. The kind that's so popular and is on the radio & MTV and gets on any of the top 10 - top 200 lists... It's too cute & bubblegummy.

Goa = psychedelic.. Yes, the Goa scene is tight and sustaining. I have not the chance to go further than Euphoric because the depth of this genre is immense. It's the same with Goa. I have spent 6 months immersing myself with the music. It will take another 6 months with another.. Ugh

What I have mentioned is commercial? It never was, it doesn't even meet the definition of it. Whatever is simulated outside the UK is just ripples in an ocean. Whatever arrives to the major music vendors is already 3-4 years behind the times.

ROFL! Have a *ball* at Max Bell. Tiesto is going to destroy the place!

And for all the fans and would-be producers, you could always check out tranceaddict.com.

I do not like trance, except goa/psychedelic.
I experience trance as empty, too simple and predicteble. Any loon can make it. Of course, their can be exceptions
Only on E I can find it to be nice.

Oh-oh. I sense great dangers in beginning a discussion about music, it never leads anywhere, but here goes:
I don't know if what you listed is commercial. Iv'e only been exposed to the commercial stuff and goa.
I have to disagree slightly about goa=psychedelic, but that's just nitpicking. Genres are quite open to interpretation, and in addition there is a lot of overlap. Besides, i'm no expert on this anyway.

But I like the otherworldness, the darkness, the intensity of psy-trance, and the epic and sometimew divine melody-lines of goa. Psychedelically inspired vocal samples are a bonus too!

I agree with divine madness. I have likened commercial (I will just call it that) trance to kindergarden-trance. It's too happy kind of. Like the teletubbies or something, makes me sick. But the flow is cool. Which is why I dig astral projection.

Iv'e been listening to goa/psy for a couple years now, and have long since given up trying to keep up. I lack the sheer stamina required to do that. So many interesting releases each and every month, forever evolving...

I know KeepAskingTime, I'm not happy at all with the direction they have taken shpongle with their second album, I wish Posford would do some more hallucinogen stuff. But I guess we all change... There is a risk of stagnating if you don't evolve.

Yeah.. I don't want to get into semantics, but I know Goa was basically the root of all from India. I listend to Goa like 4 years ago and it had the mystical theme sounds of Eastern Mysticism.

I have no idea what you mean by commercial (Darude? ATB?). Some of the big names I do not consider commercial:

Ferry Corsten / System F
Armin Van Buuren
Dj Tiesto
Paul VAn Dyk
Hybrid
Dumonde

Euphoric trance is that type of bubbly happy music, but much more deeper and emotional. ..More brighter than darker ( Psy/Goa).

I can never get used to Goa's very driven, heavy duty thumping, and dark style (reminds me of gothic). But that's the beauty of it. Plus, it's too fast for me to do wushu with. Awesome for moshing though! :D

AHAHA.. It's not SEX! Can;t keep up.. heh Yeah... I still have a huge backlog of tracks to trace / DL / listen..

I'm branching off to breakbeat trance (Hybrid) and expand my dancing skills. :P

It's not easy to make euphoric trance, or trance period.. And saything anybody can do it, is absurd..

Plus, Goa/Psy is trance too.. I have no clue what you're trying to say. o.O

I've been listening to trance for about 4 years now, started off listening to the commercial stuff, like ATB and paul van dyke and paul oakenfold and robert miles. I started moving away from that and into various djs, then i started liking trancecore. Then one day i picked up an excellent mixtape by DJ Brian E called disillusion. ive been hooked on psychedelic / goa trance ever since!!! it is the most amazing trance out there! so many layers to the music, everytime you hear it it has something new!! it expands your mind. yes alot of it is dark and can be almost evil sounding at times, but this makes it great.
heres some good ones:

Atmos - Headcleaner
Cosmosis - Cosmology
Infected Mushroom - The Gathering
Logic Bomb - Headware
Makyo - Yashkini
Pleiadians - I.F.O.
Cosmosis - Synergy
Dark Soho - Sun Spot
Double Dragon : Continuum
Etnica - Alien Protein
Green Nuns Of The Revolution - Rock Bitch Mafia
Hallucinogen - Twisted
Hux Flux : Cryptic Crunch
Infected Mushroom - Classical Mushroom
Koxbox - The Great Unknown
Koxbox - Dragon Tales
Planet BEN - Trippy Future Garden
Ooze - Where The Fields Never End
Total Eclipse - Violent Relaxation
X-Dream - Radio
A Progress In Trance (Transient)
Eclipse - A Journey Of Permanence And Impermanence
Mystery Of Yeti 1 (TIP)
Mystery Of Yeti 2 (TIP World)

just a little list of VERY good psy trance :)

Heya's, trance is definately cool. Although these days I'm finding that drum & bass is the only genre of electronic music thats really pushing it and breaking new ground constantly. Theres only so much you can do with trance, goa and the rest before it gets too predictable. But d&b is really goin places.. Heres some of the cooler tracks that I've found on a record site, that have come out recently.. Realplayer format.

B-Key - Dimenxionx - SIDE B - http://www.chemical-records.co.uk/ram/XXX003.ram

Klute - Dawn of Reason/Song Seller - Both Sides are good - http://www.chemical-records.co.uk/ram/31R015.ram

Motion - Remedy : http://www.chemical-records.co.uk/ram/INFRA017.ram

Polar - 5am - http://www.chemical-records.co.uk/ram/CERT1855.ram

They are slower cruisier tunes, but there are also some real thumpin dance tracks too. Theres heaps out there.

Breakbeat is where its at!

I read something about him compiling a cd of live material, although it would be a must-have, a completely new/original album is infinetely better. I hope he uses that mac proggie he used as shpongle to make those vocals.

I think it does.

Have you heard of Philosomatika? Radio-station: http://www.philosomatika.com
I've got 2gigs of new psytrance on my HD since I discovered it four days ago

I quite like the darker stuff, especially with guitars. But I must say that a lot of the stuff I have heard lately sounds very similiar, alas.

Yeah, some of Richard James' more recent ambient techno stuff is really incredable. Id love to see that amount of complexity and deapth in D&B and techno.

THe thing about goa/psy is the speed, at least partly. it synchs with the alpha-waves (or was it delta?) of the brain, thus being able to set you in a trance. In adition it is more repetetive (especially psy, since it doesn't have the characteristic long melody-lines commonly found in of goa) and lasts longer, so it is even more likely to throw you into an altered state/trance if you listen to it.

I find this to be very true, especially with the more "progressive" and minimalistic end of the spectrum, where there are smaller and more gradual changes over time. It's almost as if the only way to discover all the small details and nuances of a track is to fall into a trance (hence the name of the genre in general).

A 4-minute track with an extremely cliched chord-progression doesn't do much for me as opposed to a twice as fast & dynamic 7-12 minute long bouncy bassline, a 303 or two, some crazy hi-hat patterns, weird&wonderful sounds&effects in the background and in in the corners of the sound-field, a "noisy" or distorted wild& crazy "lead", some heavily eq'ed, thin drumloops/breaks in the background. Distorted heavy guitars just add to the flow, while the oscillating high-pitched saw's dig into your brain. THe occasional vocal sample is the icing on the cake...

I'm sorry for the rant, blame it on red wine, but I just  psy-trance

If anybody want's to trade mp3's pm me... But not too much! We must buy records to keep the poor artists alive!

felix you might be talking about dub ambient. stuff like the orb and shpongle. very deep basslines, slower pace, VERY nice to smoke to.

Definately! I actually classify (aphex twin, squarepusher, autechre) as drum and bass, which it is.. just harder and darker. The production levels of their stuff is incredible, let alone their mind numbing tracks of brilliance.. drum&bass is usually anything with a breakbeat and bit more substance than anything in the plain breaks genre. It mostly has a science fiction vibe.. Theres so many different types of d&b branches being made at the moment it makes people confused if they aren't familiar with the scene. Most non d&b people I've spoken to seem to think its some kind of hardcore which it isn't. It's the most intelligent type of music being made out there right now.

For me, the transformative quality of music is not defined by intellect but by feeling! Its not complexity, its not abstraction, its not simplicity, its not the labels attached. Its the heart that beats inside the music that conveys the life within it. Intellect is mind, feeling is spirit.
Psychedelic trance speaks with a certain sense of logic that seems to make sense of logic itself, transcending it, and its not something to be understood but felt. The right tracks in the correct order can really take you places, a process of growth and healing for your heart and soul. A rightness that radiates with positivety, even when things seem to spiral down. At the heart of darkness the morning will always bring new light. Intelligent music can entertain the mind, yes, but true music from the heart can move the soul and awaken you for a majickal moment or two, together with the souls around you, united as one. One dancefloor, one people, one heart.

Those posts from timeleech and bbin seem totally correct to me. Goa/psy trance is the only genre that can get me in a true ecstacy state without using any drugs. Its the music with the happiest vibe I know, and now I know why :). Ive felt it since the first time I heard it.
And know that I have read this, I love it even more :).

Is their also a theory on the spiral sounding thingys? (the second thing my brain seems to love). I do have some theories, but cant think of them right now...

Well said! In Drum&Bass, I don't mean to say its made by an intelligent person or that the music is intelligent because of its complexity and so forth. Intelligent means progression, the way the music can take the listener further in every aspect everytime. Trance is very intelligent but theres only so much you can do with the same beat. I see(hear) trance as a way to bring the mind and body into a certain state, but how many times do you want to go to the same kind of state? I see drum & bass telling a story and putting you in the middle of the story and taking you to other worlds, uncharted territory. Breakbeat generated music is the first of its kind, ancient tribal people did/could not play breakbeat, drummers these days can't even play a repeated fast breakbeat, maybe a slow one, but can only sustain it precisely, over a short period of time. I totally understand what you mean about true music coming from the heart can move you in more ways than one, etc ;).. and thats exactly what some drum&bass does. It's truly powerful stuff, you just have to find the right kind that suits you. Both trance and D&B hold the same key, to different doors. After awhile, whats behind the trance door becomes predictable. Behind the d&b door, who knows where you're goin next! Just my opinion though. :) If you like, I can hook you up with some really mindblowing tracks, that have come out in the last year. Just send me a private msg if you're interested.

Fuzzhead,

Morgan Juice,
Ok, I listened to:

Polar - 5am, it sounds flat and sloowwww.
Motion - Remedy, nice upbeat tempo.

Superstar? I doubt it. It does take much talent to produce + Djing. The producers I mentioned are the most talented in the UK.

You are probably missing something if you haven't heard the depth of other genres besides goa/psy. Euphoric + high popularity has a plethora of average talent sprinkled with the few but very talented. Goa/Psy is more concentrated + less popular. That's my fair understanding of it. I couldn't say just trance alone is predictable or lacks variety, but I do know euphoric's plot line very well.

Tiesto is very *popular* compared to other genres + producers + DJs.

BBin:

Blue... Huh?? Explain yourself! :P

A stronger meaning would be affinity. And sometimes our personal zeal gets in the way of reasonable objectivity of other *unattractive* musical forms. hahaha

I don't understand what you mean by 'close'? Tiesto is just another alias under Tijs Verwest who corroborates with Ferry Corsten on productions under different aliases:

Gouryella, Kamaya Painters , Major League , Plastic Boy , Return Of The Native , Stray Dog , The Blackmaster , Vimana

Timeleech:

Intriguing. My brain goes numb, the binaurals must not be working! ahah :)

Anyways, I agree with BBin's philosphical perspective. Whatever fires up your neurons on whatever genre is just all wholesome goodness.

I also love the other aspect: the expression of movement. Not only can I truly hear the music, I can [soul]walk with it. I can move like a lightning bird I was meant to be.

Trance (goa/psy/euphoric/hard) was never meant just to be heard. It's very tribalistic.

WOOT! WOOT!

Im sorry man, I listened a bit more to it but I stick with my opinion. Its empty.
And I only have heard the greatest djs, since these are pretty populair here.
For me, the "euphoric" sound is empty, it sounds to artificial. And the melodies are so simplistic, and so cliche. And also, empty. Like the depressed after feeling of xtc

It's difficult to make good trance (or any kind of music) no matter what sub-genre. However, it's a lot easier to to whip up the sweet, flowing kind of melody with the standard "popular" trance chord progression than it is to do all the sound-layers of psy-trance. Believe me, I speak from experience.
And equipment has nothing to do with it. Nothing at all. Hits have been made in the bedroom (albeit they are exceptions) with just bog-standard computer speakers to monitor with. (even some pros use crappy car-speakers to know what it sounds like on them, as that's where most music is played, in the car)

I believe the reason for psytrance's relative unpopularity is that it typically hasn't got a very catchy melody (if it has one at all ), and that is something I seem to be hearing all over

Another aspect, as mentioned by Morgue Juice, are the beats. Most "ordinary" that Iv'e hear doesn't actually have one. It's the usual boom-tsh-boom-tsh-boom-tsh. That is not how it is with psy. There you often find a lot of "tribal" rythms. And it's seldom that you find just the repeating bass&open hihat rythm.

But I am not really qualified to say very much about this, since I categorically have avoided any other trance and thus am quite ignorant as to the current state of affairs outside the psychedelic realm of it

Explain myself? ok, Blue planet corporation. Their tracks can be 'labeled' euphoric goatrance. not the cheesy chordprogressions & cliche melody stuff, but the truly heartbreaking soulstirring melodic harmonies layered structures higher then the highest peak slow buildups kind of trance, where probably all the other (cheesy) 'euphoric' trance has been modeled on.

Morgue juice, i used to be heavily into d&b, but thats a while ago. I still have a shitload of old vinyls, aphrodite, titty twister, metalheadz, good looking records stuff, etc, and a lot of hard and dark stuff. I go for a very very different vibe right now. Flowers and birds and sunshine on clouds kind of stuff, positive vibes. Yep, i turned into a darned fluffy hippy! ;) dolphins and all! I sort of lost track of squarepusher after 'music is rotten one note', didnt like it.

haha! cool stuff.. The older d&b stuff you mentioned is great! I spose we can only thank Goldie and LTJ Bukem among some others for the whole deal. About the lighter vibe you're in.. cool to hear! (watch out for those dolphins tho ;).. I move around a bit with my music but try and balance the light and dark side .. Squarepusher can be a bit mind numbing at times, not really for the fainthearted d&b listeners thats for sure. But hes pushing the boundaries, so props to him for that..

You really should hear some recent stuff. Tech Itch, Panacea, Stakka & Skynet, Dom&Roland, Ed Rush & Optical, Klute, Teebee, John B.. and a lot of other bigger names. If you get the chance.. try and hunt down some tracks by those artists.. great works

Timeleech, I concur. At least you've represented your thoughts very well.

I have been listening to Fuzz's selections and I notice the psy-layering - definitely dissimiliar from Goa . I just have one problem. How in blazes do I move to this music?

BBin, thanks for responding. :) Are there any other producers similar to Blue?

Oh and what do you mean by: "I go for a very very different vibe right now. Flowers and birds and sunshine on clouds kind of stuff, positive vibes. Yep, i turned into a darned fluffy hippy! ;) "

Oh yeah, Liquid-pop dancing is amazing. Anyone wants to see the trailer of LPC's soon-to-be released instructional video, go to:

www.reflective.net

The trailers are at the bottom of the page.

EDIT: I listend to the Blue's choons, I see the similarities without the arpeggio-melody layering.

Just a question, did any of you even tried the selections I gave?

Guess I'm one of the few who (uh) likes the cheesy stuff. :P

Well here's some more for whomever:

Martin Eyerer - Euphoria (extended mix)
Alex-G & Fame - Freedom (Green Court mix)
Fire & Ice - Souvenir De Chine

'Human Blue' have some really nice tracks (try Sandal Wood, Travelling and Protonica)
I mean just what i said, i go for a very different vibe right now, dont like dazed and confused anymore, not into hard full on weirdness anymore, freaky creepy strangeness with twists and turns into choatic madness. At the moment i find myself more in the light heart, wonder and amazement, clearness and sharpness, clarity and understanding, floating. And this reflects also onto the music i currently like. I think its quite good to go through different moods and states of minds, following the cycles.
In trance, i really like (progressive psychedelic) morning music. Moovers and groovers (tip world) kind of stuff. And i love the last tip world compilation 'the mystery of the 13 crystal skulls', its amazing! On the last few parties ive heard almost every song on the cd played (sometimes even twice!!) of course with artists like shpongle, doof, logic bomb you cant
expect anything less. check it out (www.tipworld.co.uk - also check out the amazing fluor backdrops by brahman.. whoa..)

i don't mean to disrespect anyone's preferences but this is the real deal, you wanna know what trance is about ? imagine listening to this in some dark forrest in the middle of nowhere in front of huge speakers surrounded by good friends and after having a few drops, no predictable repetitive build ups and it makes love to your ears and brain

I used to listen to that a lot!

From 1995, Humate - 3.1 is probably one of my all time faves!

The whole Hemispheres EP is great, and the East remixes EP too, especially the Opium Den remix.

OOBE, RITM

I sometimes listen to trance. I used to listen to it more when I used to go to raves in the late 90s-early 00s. Mostly Epic trance and Hard Acid trance.
But now, after stopping the raving and in retirement, I've started listening to Psy/Goa Trance. And I also got really into Psybient & Psychill for a while. Which even lead me to Space music, which is VERY relaxing after you just smoked a fatty.

But yeah, Trance has changed. I miss the Epic trance of the 90s. I sometimes listen to the TRance or Epic Trance channel on di.fm.

If yall like Trance, you need to make it to Hilltop in Goa sometime soon. Trance capital of the world. Shit is a perpetual psychedelic party

Attaching a video down below. Keep in mind this is a venue, not a festival set up. Meaning this stage is there all year, and they throw parties there all the fucking time
