Anybody know any good world music?

Does anybody know of any world music (tribal drumming, digeredoo, ethnic music, etc) that they would recommend? I'm all about broadening my musical horizons and from what I've heard of world music I like it a lot but its kinda tough to find. So if anyone is familiar with this and can help, I'd appreciate it.

You can go to the nearest branch of the public library! That's a good place for that kind of thing. Just check the world music section! They have all that Aborigines and wood blocks stuff.
There are some neat compilations of new world music. The Africa Raps compilation of west African hip-hop is neat. It's kind of one of those things that sounds like it'd be really great but is actually not so good.
There's a thing called Africa, too. It's up to Volume III now, I think. Modern African music. The first one was west African and there's a south African one.
There's a really cool compilation of Asian dance music, too. Asian Take-Aways. I think that's what it's called. It's put out by a record label called QDK Media. They have all kinds of neat stuff like that. Like a compilation of Central American psychedelic rock! Or 70's Bollywood music.
That might not be what you want.
Go to the public library.

I bought a CD that said it was native american drumming from walmart, and it sucked. As soon as they got a good beat going it would stop and they'd start something else. That ended my search for such music. Maybe I'll try to get another sometime... maybe.

Juno Reactor is kinda..........it definately incorperates many genres of music. I reccomend SHANGO, or BIBLE OF DREAMS. Good stuff.

I just got Spiritchaser ... that's good stuff. I like a lot. Are the other Dead Can Dance albums any good?
I have Bible of Dreams, I do like it a lot but I'm looking for something a little more pure and authentic.

Ever listen to any Ravi Shankar? I love that music, it's addictive. It has some ultra-cool drumming in it at times. If you want to check some out I've got three of his albums and you could download some via FTP from me, just PM me if you do.

try this music called 'gamelan', its indonesian and its basically an orchestra of wierd gongs and tuned percussion playing scales that dont exist in western music. Very good while tripping

at Amoeba records, i found a section called "World Fusion" distorted guitars and didgeridoos, tabla players and DJs... some really Next Level waves for Psilocybe to surph.
anything on Six Degree Records is top-notch, as far as production... try the group Ekova, it's D&B, Djembes and Tablas with strange Wombman Vox. many have attempted to combine Primal with Electrological music, very few have maintained an integrity of design.
Shpongle, Forest For The Trees, and Ween to name a few...
imho "Spiritchaser" is Dead Can Dance's best (last) work to date. i wish they will regroup. DCD's "Aion" ,"A Passage In Time", "The Serpent and the Egg" , and "Toward the Within" are all fantastic listening experiences...
noone can compare to Dead Can Dance, they are the most famous group that noones ever heard of.

I don't know if this qualifies as world music, but I'm a big fan of Deep Forest. If you've never heard DF, they are these two French guys who go all over the world seeking out ancient sounding local and tribal music. They record the tribal music, then they mix techno-trance beats over top of the local sound. The result is a very eclectic combo that works well. I highly recommend them. Check out Deep Forest.

Search google for an article at the NEw York Times by David Byrne (of Talking Heads) entitled "I Hate World Music." He makes a great case against the label "World Music" and just how silly it is with the amount of different stuff they lop in there.

dead can dance - a very strenge blend, but simply put, amazing manu chao and manu negra - catalonian/french/spanish reggae/world fela kuti - crazy funky african rhythmic jazz/funk/groove ravi shankar - a master of north-indian music nusrat fateh ali khan and ali akbar khan - amazing sufi music any carnatic music (search carnatic.com) - south indian music
but, i agree with onemorerobot - the label "world music" is a bit silly... does it just mean anything not from the western world, or does it mean reggae, or what?
