goth is pretty much a fashionable subculture and a musical genre that evolved in the UK and Germany in the 1980s. If you want music that goth boys and girls listen/listened to think 1980s post-punk (sometimes proto-industrial) with a fetish for all things dark and decadent and melancholy and ethereal and sexually deviant. For some reason, people associate the goth style to metal bands and Hot Topic-esque clothing, but that is not entirely accurate.

check out joy division, bauhaus, sisters of mercy, alien sex fiend, skinny puppy, black tape for a blue girl, wax trax records, christian death, cleopatra records, projeckt records, switchblade symphony, cruxshadows, early cure, london aftermidnight, clan of xymox, lycia, etc. And then put on some latex pants and go whip your slave while you cry and listen to BTBG over and over

naw there's a type of music called goth rock which sucks major ass. Most the goths I know like black metal, which is gothic sounding. Cradle of filth is a good one, they often mix live orchestra in with the mewzak.

That is all metal music, like you said. Sure, goth people might listen to metal, but metal is not gothic. The original poster was curious about goth music specifically. Goth is the genre of dark post-punk, proto-industrial, electro, neo-folk, neo-classical, and EBM. Metal is a different scene/genre.

Joy Division is the band that evolved into New Order... Joy Division is a post-punk - new wave type of band. I think they are amazing. Check out the song Dead souls. NIN did a cover of that song. However its not nearly as good as the original.

I was dragged to a Goth event with these 2 bI chicks that convinced me it was gonna be a unforgettable experience. Me and these groups of friends just kinda travel around Florida and hit upp all the cultured events like Raves,Punk shows Hippie Fests, Goth Gatherings etc....And they are pretty rich and have a closet full of costumes that correspond with each event. I had tons of Fun at all the other cultured events I was brought too but The Goth one was a little too intense for me. THe event that I went too was more of a strip culb type fetish place with people tied to the walls getting spaked and shit. The Drugs of choice were also alot more harder like HEROin-Meth-Ketamine and Coke. Too scary for me. I stayed and had fun just watching these freak show unfold before my eyes. But I would never go there again. I wouldnt be surprised if they conduct weeklsy sacrafices there. hehe JK What ever floats your boatq

Peter Murphy (Bauhaus) is the father of Goth music.

Goths have been around since the beging of time practically. There have always been meloncholy people who wear black.

Look at Hamlet.

New goths, or neogoths, have been around since the 1800's when the proper Victorian era English enjoyed exploring their darker side at night.

Books such as Dracula, Frankenstein and Dr Jeckyl and Mr Hyde were written at this time; the Victorian/Neo Gothic era.

Todays goths are no different then yesterday's.

They still, are pale folks in black clothes.

When you are old, there will still be gothic children and gothic music. Gothic music is hardly new.

Gothic is often confused with S&M because many Goths like S&M. S&M is certainly gothic, but it is hardly the entire goth experience.

Joy Division is one of my favorite bands. Have you heard the box set? You should also check out New Order's first album Movement, if you havent already.

Haha, I did my time in the Hollywood/LA goth S&M scene when I lived out there - we used to go to these back alley afterhour parties where girls would be handcuffed nude to pipes and crosses and then whipped by nasty looking masters. Craziness  Those were the days, I'd wake up the next afternoon and think to myself, "whoa, last night was so fucked up. I just saw naked women get whipped all night and did coke in a dark hallway with a dude in a loincloth."

I LOVE Dead Can Dance...

I agree with Xochitl, My idea of "goth" isn't what I think people consider it today. Skinny puppy, EN (Einstein Neubauten), Sioux and the Banshees, Nick Cave, etc....

Goth isn't metal. Fetishes aren't goth. But then again, I do like leather!

and 45 Grave. Of course Vox Pop, Castration Squad, Speed Queens, and a host of assorted early LA punk music. C'mon guys, if you haven't heard 45 Grave can you really be goth? Their songs like Black Cross, Surfbat, Ribonavin Flavored Non Carbonated Polyunsaturated Blood, and so on are the original American goth. In case you don't know their original drummer was Don Bolles, of The Germs, and then Nirvana.

I don't think that's the case, but goths and metalheads seem to go hand in hand (in my view). A lot of goths like metal, it seems.
