Format War Over - Blu-Ray Wins

Maybe next time with both the Betamax and HD-DVD fiascos behind them, the industry's morons will cooperate and save millions of dollars and lots of consumer confusion.
--
Japanese corporation Toshiba surrendered to Sony’s Blu-Ray technology and released a statement announcing the end of the road for the HD DVD. Toshiba says however that HD DVD consumers will continue to have full product support despite the decision not to develop and manufacture HD DVD players anymore.
Toshiba Corp. will put an end to the HD DVD business by the end of March 2008, which includes besides players and recorders, HD DVD disk drives for PC applications and games. However, the company will continue to support and develop the standard DVD format, regardless of what is going to happen to the HD DVD market.
“We carefully assessed the long-term impact of continuing the so-called ‘next-generation format war’ and concluded that a swift decision will be best help the market develop,” Atsutoshi Nishida, President and CEO of Toshiba Corporation, said according to the company’s press release. “While we are disappointed … Toshiba is both able and determined to use our talent, technology and intellectual property to make digital convergence a reality.”
Since the beginning of this year, several retailers took the decision to swear allegiance to the Blu-Ray, including Woolworths and Wal-Mart, and despite Toshiba’s announcement that it will stay devoted to the HD DVD format, the inevitable happened. Analysts expected Toshiba’s move sooner or later, as Blu-Ray became a market’s favorite.
Several attempts to find a common solution and promote a single format brought Sony and Toshiba to absolutely no agreement, and Blu-Ray continued to make its way to the top. Despite several announcements in the past few months of companies such as Warner Bros. Entertainment or China Film Group that they’ve decided to turn exclusively to Blu-Ray format, Toshiba said it will continue the collaboration with Universal Studios, Paramount Pictures, DreamWorks Animation, Intel, Microsoft and HP in the future, “utilizing the many assets generated through the development of HD DVD.”

Yup, its times like this i'm glad i am too poor to be an early adopter of anything.
I like being a late-adopter. In two years or so, i'll totally go out and find a blue ray player.

Guess I'm glad to be a Playstation (rather then xbox) fan now. My PS3 won't be obsolete as fast and the blu-ray's I've already purchased weren't a waste!

It will be interesting to see how much of a "win" this really is for blu-ray. I think from a consumer perspective, blu-ray offers a lot of advantages the majority of consumers don't need.
For instance, not a lot of people will benefit from the HD format. In reality, only people with a HDTV 42" and above that is 1080p capable will notice a significant increase in quality.
I don't think a lot of people need a 50 gigabyte storage medium. Some do, but a lot of people use computers for basic activities: surfing the net, photos, email, some music, etc.
As far as video games are concerned, there really has never been a universal medium.
To top it all off solid-state drives are becoming cheaper and larger. We also have a lot of things "on demand", like HD movies.
I think SONY is congratulating themselves over winning an insignificant war.

so does this mean xbox will make an external blueray drive now? furthermore, i wonder if that is why they made the hd-dvd drive external?

Microsoft may make an external dvd drive, and I would laugh my ass off if they did, as they will have to pay royalties to some of their direct competitors, mainly Sony...so funny
I'm glad that blu-ray won, it is the superior format, more storage, built in machine independant java (not MS bullshit HDi), even though only used for features not yet implemented. And much more scratch resistant to boot.
Also, 'on demand' HD content is still pretty far off. As a blu-ray or hd-dvd movie is anywhere from 9-30 GB on disc. To download that information at that quality would take a long damn time, as well as hog up shit loads of bandwidth. The current hd downloads on xbox360, netflix, and what not are encoded with very lossy codecs, making them practical to download, but also making calling them HD a flat out lie.

In the video world, HD defines a picture size (resolution) and has nothing to do with quality.

It's time for ultra-violet ray. Or ultr-viololz ray, because spelling colours correctly is a sin against marketing.
In two years time, your bluray players will be obsolete junk. At which point, the only sane thing to do will be to bin them and buy the new players.
VHS sucked. I did not like it. DVD players are great, but recording is iffy. Hard drive recorders are ace, but often are closed off, and you can't make copies of what you recorded.
Yay for PC's and not being the victim of proprietary locking.

I have nothing but problems with Xvid movies.

Agreed. Sometimes I will have the actual DVD, and still prefer to DL an xvid of it. It more convenient, doesnt need a box that takes up space on a shelf, and is just easier to use all around. Who wins the format war? Hard drives

Awesome...I just looked into this, and it's really nice. No need to burn anything anymore. I haven't had any sort of quality issues so far, it's working perfectly.
The only problem is that it won't play my .mkv files
