What kind of cacti is this? Peyote?!
    #795647 - 08/04/02 11:04 AM (21 years, 7 months ago)

Anyone know? Its spineless so I thought it woulda been something cool! Its in my friends greenhouse. I wouldnt be suprised if it was a version of peyote.

Oh, I thought Id mention that the big one in the center is about 5-6 inches in diameter and the whole cluster is about 10 inches.

Really?

Hmm yeah I was looking through the pictures of peyote and it looks very similar, but maybe not exactly. Anyone know the species name of this?

Errrnt... wrong psilocyber. It is peyote.

http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=Garden&Number=792808&page=0&view=collapsed&sb=5&o=&fpart=1

Look at that post. I'm not sure what the species is, it could just be a variation of williamsii. Maybe CluB99 can elaborate. Either way, tis a peyote.

No clue. I haven't grown peyote yet, unfortunately. My guess would be around 10-15 years. I bet Club99 or Psilocybe_Cubensis could tell ya

it looks like it was harvested once above ground then it grew back with many more. i could be wrong as in my post above though, i just thought that looked like a friend of mines rare cactus that is a relative of peyote.

Right on...thats so cool to hear.

The person who had this peyote is 53, so I was thinking it could have been pretty old...maybe left over from the 60's.

He was in a ceremony with some native americans back in the 70s where they all ate peyote and prayed to the gods.

When does it give off seeds?

It looks like it just flowered, when and how do you collect them?

well...if you look carefully into the white tufts (sp?) around the center you should be able to find some seeds, unless your friend is greedly collecting them.
other way is to wait the fruits....i bet it will give some very soon, specially if is well watered...
here you can see how they looks

wait until almost dry but still soft, collect the seeds and let them dry a little (before shipping some to me )

Thanks for all the great replies guys.

Well, I'll try to collect some seeds, I would be down to trade as well Im going to start looking for some information on how to grow from a button. Maybe cutting one of the side ones off and starting my own from that...

Can anyone point me in the right direction? (URL wise?)

please no...don't mutilate that beauty!!!
try to find some seeds and start with them, you can graft little ones onto san pedro's and obtain nice 2 inches button in a couple of years...

or just eat the whole plant, and pray him to teach you

Well,

I kind of agree with Club99 and kind of disagree. I agree, eat the whole plant and pray to him to teach you (but pray first each day for at least a week, then fast, then eat him and learn the lesson). However I disagree with cultivating a button with Club99.

If you cultivate a button you are cloning this 30+ year old plant, meaning when you clone him, once the clone is established, it is basically a 30+ year old plant (also the mother plant will develop new pups if harvested properly). If you grow from seed, you have a young plant (I do agree that you should also be growing from seed and that grafting is a great tool).

If you clone the plant, make sure it is fully established before you do anything to it (harvest it) and if you do this properly it will produce pups like a 30+ year old plant (if it has been given the time to establish itself, i.e. grow strong roots).

There are also techniques that would allow you to harvest the plant and then graft the growing tips onto another cactus and preserve the plant that way, pick up any college plant physiology text for information on how to do just that.

Last point, I agree that if you don't know what you are doing (haven't done your research, feel like you are going to screw up) DO NOT mutilate that plant, but if you read and research, and feel you have grasp on the material I say go for it.

All my best (and wish I had the opportunity to clone a Lophophora that age),

reite
