deep water culture with CACTI? suggestions please.
    #3004720 - 08/14/04 05:15 PM (12 years, 3 months ago)

Ok here is what i have in mind. I have 3 rooted cacti doing well in soil. But i would like to try to experiment with an DWC setup. I will follow this tek to the T. Going to try to find a 2.5 to 3gallon bucket and use a netpot witha medium of perlite (due to convenience). The bucket will be wrapped in 2 or 3 layers of duct tape to prevent any light leaks. Going to start with a very diluted solution as suggested by nan in his cactus care tips article. (2-1/2 Tablespoons of Peter's Professional All-Purpose plant food per 5 gallons of water for starts. This is a 20-20-20 fertilizer with chelated trace elements: ) Is whats called for. Also the lighting setup will probably be around 4 27w CF lights to get things started. But I do have a few questions.

1) How often to change the nutes out and clean the bucket? I thought having two buckets so i could just transplant one into a fresh solution. Should I alternate feedings with plain water every 2 weeks or so?

2) Will lighting be sufficient to promte growth during the winter?

3) Is there an optimal amount of oxygen to have with the bubbling action? Can too much oxygen for a plants roots be a bad thing??

4) What are the risks associated with rot or the plant dying if any??

5) Where to find locally any 2.5g to 3g buckets??

6) When transplating one of the cacti from soil to DWC what steps do i need to take to get the roots cleansed of all the dirt on them?

Thanks for your help guys.

yea i tried emailing that guy a while back asking about aeroponics type setup and I never got a replay back. but thanks none the less. Also Una you think if I just let the roots soak most of the dirt would come off of them? Cause aren't they susposed to be really clean before they go into the solution?

Also here's a pic of the proposed setup i just drewup in mspaint.exe :P

I would use krylon spray paint to coat the container rather than all that duct tape. Use the primer and make sure it's the one that goes on plastics. Then you can put a second coat on with any type of paint and it will stick and stay. I was thinking about doing this for about a year now and never got to it. We had a thread about it in the botanical swap forum. I would take the seedlings and put them in pea gravel or perlite in a net cup. Put the cup so the solution covers the bottom. Soon as roots grow down into the solution let the level drop so it is just below the netcup. Roots will keep growing into the water but this helps keep the stem from rotting.

I would use regular hydro nutes with about an even npk ratio. Don't forget that you need an air bubbler in the bottom of your reservoir and it should be going 24/7

Heres a beauty from the nook. I'd never actually seen it done before.

krylon fusion is a plastic bonding spraypaint, perfect for painting the buckets black. I woundnt paint the insides because there are chems in the paint that will slowly leach out.

Pereskiopsis would make a perfect rootsock for most species. If your growing top heavy pedros just use 5" netpots with growrocks and burry the stem deep for good support. A support setup similar to scrog only using soft straps possibly with velcro that can be weaved aorund the cacti could support tall growth.

If you want to go areoponic build a cheap simple system like this,
http://www.overgrow.com/growfaq/1219
Ive seen a grow using a system like this at overgorw. At only 2 weeks in the system from seed started in rockwool for one week the plants were 16"! Most of the first week was spent adjusting to the system growing roots past the growrocks and into the system.

Home depot in the painting section has 2 and 5 gal white buckets or even orange, if that floats your boat, for $2-4 if you want to go that route. Buckets are a bit stronger holding up big cacti but you either need to plumb the buckets together or maintain each one seperatly. This is why i feel using a single container as in the aero-spring is better for maintence. Also a tote system would be easier to set up a support system for tall cacti.

Peyote and other button cacti on Pereskiopsis would be the easiest to grow since it wont get too top heavy and you can use 3" netpots with closer spacing.

Or you can grow pachanoi and peruvianus and just top them or luckily get a plant like una has that throw out mad pups as seen here http://www.mushmush.nl/?page=home\gallery\cacti ( pictures titled "Tr. pachanoi grafted on Pereskiopsis, 7 months old" )
Ps to una is that normal with grafting those two species or was it a genetic thing with the scion plant? Have you grafted pachanoi on Pereskiopsis more then this one specimin?
